Mobile telephone system, general
A differentiation is made between the following equipment and utilization variants in the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Comfort telephony (with code 386 (Comfort telephony))
Both versions use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer.

A mobile phone authorized on the head unit can also be used as a modem to access the Internet.
A mobile phone authorized on the head unit can also be used as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® audio.

Bluetooth®
Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to quickly and easily connect mobile terminals that support the corresponding profiles to the mobile phone system. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e. g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The extremely high level of data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of this type of Bluetooth® network are what makes the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting. The head unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy over the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.
If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the head unit or if the head unit is to be establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually over the telephone base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. When authorizing a new telephone if 15 telephones are already authorized, the user is prompted to first delete one of the existing data records. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.
Switch on/off characteristics
A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® is switched on and off on the mobile phone itself. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) prompt, if configured on the mobile phone and it is transmitting the status, occurs on the mobile phone only and the PIN has to be entered into the mobile phone. After registering with the mobile telephone network of the mobile telephone network provider, the mobile telephone network provider and the signal level are displayed in the status bar of the Audio/COMAND display. The switch-off signal via the mobile phone button is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. The message "Ready for Bluetooth® telephony" is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display and the system automatically searches for mobile phones used last.
The head unit can be switched on and off using the ON/OFF button with volume control. The control signal for the On/Off button with volume control is transmitted via the following route:

Call signal
The head unit receives the call signal over the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone. If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ring tone is emitted over the speakers, otherwise the head unit's default ringing sound is used. The head unit forwards the call signal as follows:
- On vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system), over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.
- On vehicles with CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), over MOST to the advanced sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.
- On vehicles except CODE 810 (Sound system) and except CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), over direct lines to the speaker system.
The head unit mutes an active audio source (e.g. during radio mode) (mute function) and displays the caller ID on the Audio/COMAND display via the LVDS line.

Special types of calling, such as toggling phone calls or conference connections, are possible if the mobile phone can process more than one connection at a time. Functional restrictions can occur when toggling or establishing a conference connection in certain mobile phone networks (e.g. in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks in the USA or in Japan), depending on the country involved.
Toggle: If during a telephone call another incoming call is received or another telephone connection is set up, then the new call is activated and the existing one put on hold. It is then possible to switch (toggle) between the active call and the one on hold.
Conference connection: If the mobile phone supports the function, it is possible - after several calls have been connected - to switch, not only between the calls, as for toggling, but to have all the calls active at the same time in a conference connection.
Mobile phone
The mobile phone control is processed internally, status changes are received by the head unit over the Bluetooth® antenna.

The head unit receives the operation signals from the touchpad over the telematics CAN.
Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (With Code 531 (COMAND APS))
The VCS is activated on the left multifunction steering wheel button group. When a call is being established or a call is being accepted, the VCS is automatically switched off.

Head unit
When the voice control system is active, the voice commands are recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded over a direct line to the head unit. If necessary, the head unit sends the control signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone.
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input in the hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone, and forwarded to the head unit. The head unit sends the signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone. The head unit receives the incoming voice signals via the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone and forwards them to the speaker system as follows:
- On vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system), over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.
- On vehicles with CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), over MOST to the advanced sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.
- On vehicles except CODE 810 (Sound system) and except CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), over direct lines to the speaker system.
Phone book
Read access to the telephone book of the mobile phone is possible if the mobile phone supports the Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise, data system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately.
The telephone book contains the telephone entries stored in the head unit. The data user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book. The from the phone book of the mobile phone can only be loaded onto the head unit via "vCards".
Address book
Users can manage their contact data in the address book. Viewing, deleting and transferring of address book entries are always possible; editing of address book entries (manually creating, supplementing or changing entries) is only possible in vehicles with CODE 531 (COMAND APS). Address book entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address book entries that contain telephone numbers are made available to the mobile phone system in the phone book.
Address data from external devices (e.g. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), notebook, etc.) can be stored in the address book, whereupon the data is then permanently available as an address entry. Address data can be sent over the following system components from the external devices to the address book:
- Bluetooth® interface of mobile phone and the Bluetooth® antenna
- SD card slot (Secure Digital) or USB connectors (Universal Serial Bus) of multimedia connection unit (with code 531 (COMAND APS))
Address book entries can contain the following information among other things:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic notation entry of name in the "Katakana" syllabary) (with code 498 (Japan version))
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- E-mail and Web addresses
- Geo position
- Voice tags

The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
Read access is available to the phone book of the mobile phone when the mobile phone supports the PBAP profile. Otherwise, data from the phone book of the mobile phone can only be loaded onto the head unit via "vCards".
Speed-dial list
The speed dial list consists of up to ten telephone numbers to which phone book entries can be assigned with digits from 0 to 9. The user can manage the entries using the "Call lists" and "Speed dial list" menu entries. The speed dial list is active only when the telephone menu is active.
"Seamless switch"
"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:
- An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the head unit is switched on and "Private mode" is not activated on the mobile phone.
- If the head unit is switched off during a telephone call, the call is forwarded to the mobile phone where it can be continued.
With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.
Two phone mode (as of 01.06.2018)
In the two phone mode, two mobile phones are connected at the same time to the head unit. The mobile phone selected as the "first telephone" can be used without restrictions through the head unit.
The "second telephone" can use the following functions through the head unit:
- Incoming calls
- Incoming messages (SMS)
The user can switch between the "first telephone" and the "second telephone" using the head unit.
Short Message Service (SMS) (except code 498 (Japan version))
The SMS application allows the user to receive, transmit and manage his/her SMS messages (e. g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the head unit. The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receive SMS
- Read SMS
- Read SMS (English or German)
- Write and send SMS
- Delete SMS
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported. Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.
As soon as the head unit is connected to the mobile phone, it starts to receive the SMS messages already stored in the mobile phone, and any new incoming SMS messages over the mobile phone's Bluetooth® antenna. The functions for writing, sending and managing SMS messages are activated through the basic telephone function. The head unit controller unit displays the SMS messages on the Audio/COMAND display via the LVDS line. When the SMS is being read out, the head unit sends the audio signals either directly to the speaker system or via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)) or the Advanced sound system amplifier control unit (with code 811 (Advanced sound system)).

- Telephone number of the Service Center entered as a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the head unit's telephone book or in the address book or in the mobile phone's telephone book
Mercedes-Benz Contact (except CODE 494 (USA version) and except CODE 498 (Japan version))
The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the head unit's address book or the mobile phone's telephone book. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system (via Bluetooth®) and supports the service acceptance process at the Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.
The fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the head unit's telephone book or in the address book or in the mobile phone's telephone book is selected via one of the following control options:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Touchpad (with CODE 448 (Touchpad) or with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
- VCS (with code 531 (COMAND APS))
Once voice connection has been established with the Service Center, the user can start the data transfer. For data transfer purposes, the instrument cluster sends the kilometer reading and the maintenance computer information over the user interface CAN to the head unit. The position data of the navigation module integrated in the head unit is also transferred (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)). The data are sent by the head unit using Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones to the Service Center in the same way as when the call has been established successfully. After the data has been transferred to the Service Center, the user can talk to an employee at the Service Center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.
Comfort telephony (With Code 386 (Comfort telephony))
The cellular telephone signals are transmitted and received over the telephone antennas. The connection is established through the telephone antenna splitter, cellular telephone system antenna amplifier/compensator (as of model year

The mobile phone signals are received from the mobile telephone network as follows:

Mobile phone contact plate
The mobile phone contact plate routes the mobile phone signals over the mobile phone cradle (accessories up to model year 2017) or the universal smartphone cradle (as of model year 2017) to the mobile phone. The mobile phone forwards the mobile phone signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the head unit.
Switch-on characteristics
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse when the head unit is switched on. The head unit sends the signal over a direct line to the mobile phone contact plate. The mobile phone contact plate routes the signal over the mobile phone cradle (accessories up to model year 2017) or the universal smartphone cradle (as of model year 2017) to the mobile phone.
