Function requirements, general 

Internet connection, general 

The Internet menu can be opened up in the home screen in the menu line via a menu in the "Telephone" item. The home screen can be opened up using the Home and Favorites button. When the "Internet radio" function is selected in the "Radio" menu, the Internet menu is opened up as well.

IMPORTANT Internet use is demonstrated below by way of an example through operation on the Audio/COMAND control panel.

The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:

The function is activated by calling up the menu through one of the following controls:

The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals via telematics CAN to the head unit.

Head unit

When operated through the VCS, the hands-free system microphones convert the voice commands into electrical signals and forward them to the head unit.

The touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad) or code 531 (COMAND APS)) sends the operation signals to the head unit over the telematics CAN.

The head unit generates the screen display and forwards it over an LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display.

The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is generally used as the server for the connection to the Internet. Through the encrypted connection to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway, the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing and using services and cannot be located in the network via his/her activities.

IMPORTANT If the head unit is used as a hotspot or if the Internet radio service is activated, the data traffic is not processed via the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway.

The head unit sends data over the following path to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway:

IMPORTANT Model 190 up to 10/2/16

If a telephone antenna malfunctions or the reception quality is poor, the emergency call system control unit automatically sends and receives the mobile phone signals over the emergency call system antenna.

IMPORTANT Model 190 up to 11/30/18 up to model year 2019 with code 362 (HERMES LTE) with code 494 (US version)

The HERMES control unit also uses the emergency call system antenna and the telephone antennas to send and receive the signals.

Depending on the requests from the head unit, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and service providers over the Internet. The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway sends the received data the opposite way to the head unit.

IMPORTANT Activating a manual or automatic emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB information call interrupts the Internet connection.

IMPORTANT The Internet connection cannot be manually interrupted. In the event of any browser inactivity and after closing it the Internet connection is then disconnected after a defined period of time.

The mobile telephone network provider must first be selected. The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Further access information is required (e.g. on the tariff) that can be obtained from the mobile phone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.

The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is generally used as the server for the connection to the Internet. Through the encrypted connection to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway, the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing and using services and cannot be located in the network via his/her activities.

IMPORTANT Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the "Scissors" (disconnect connection) soft key in the function bar make it easier to manage costs with either a time or data volume contract.

With basic telephony, the head unit sends data via an encoded VPN (virtual private network) connection to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway over the following path:

With comfort telephony (with code 386 (Comfort telephony)), the head unit transmits data via an encoded VPN connection to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway over the following path:

According to the requests from the head unit, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and the service providers via the Internet and sends the received data in the opposite direction to the head unit over the encrypted VPN connection.

IMPORTANT Multiple use of the mobile phone: As a matter of principle, mobile phones that support the Internet connection function can be used to process several functions in parallel. It is, e.g. possible to make a telephone call when connected to the Internet, although this is dependent on the quality of the network being used. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.

Internet usage 

The Internet can be used via the head unit and operated using the following component parts:

IMPORTANT During operation the content is shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

Internet use is demonstrated below by way of an example through operation on the Audio/COMAND control panel.

The Internet browser can receive audio signals (e.g. Internet radio). The head unit proceeds as follows with audio signals from the Internet:

The volume control for the audio output is transmitted by the On/Off button with volume control as follows:

The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:

The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary. The head unit receives the necessary information from the instrument cluster over the user interface CAN.

IMPORTANT If, for a specific period of time, no control signals are activated for the Internet function, the head unit automatically disconnects the Internet connection. On vehicles except CODE 348 (Emergency call/assist system), the time period for automatic disconnection in the event of inactivity can be defined. If necessary the Internet connection is automatically set up again.

Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services 

By turning the audio/COMAND controller, the "Mercedes-Benz Apps" is then shown on the audio/COMAND display in the foreground. The selection is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel. The individual services and the options for the services can now be actuated in the same way using the Audio/COMAND control panel. The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the head unit as have the design of the displays on the Audio/COMAND display so that operation is essentially intuitive.

IMPORTANT The "Back" button of the Audio/COMAND control panel leads back to the home screen of the Internet menu.

IMPORTANT Other services are possible, but they are not described in detail here.

Find points of interest (With Code 531 (COMAND APS)) 

Search terms can be selected from lists or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for a search term, e.g. at the current location, at the navigation destination or at an arbitrary location (free entry).

IMPORTANT The area that is being searched is defined under "Options".

The search results appear in the form of a list. The search results can be stored in the address book or under "Personal POIs" on the SD (Secure Digital) card in the SD card slot of the multimedia connection unit. If a list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up. A selected search result can be transferred to the navigation system, and in this case the head unit switches to the navigation menu.

Weather 

Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map.

In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed. However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition, city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the audio/COMAND display.

The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed. The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.

IMPORTANT Weather data are sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.

IMPORTANT POIs or routes that have been sent to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. via Google Maps) are also transmitted to the vehicle via the Service Center.

The Service Center transmits POIs or routes via the following route:

With circuit 15 OFF, the emergency call system control unit (with code 348 (Emergency call/assist system)) or HERMES control unit (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) stores the data in an integrated buffer.

IMPORTANT A maximum of 100 special destinations and 30 routes with up to 255 route points can be stored. If the capacity of the buffer is exceeded, the oldest POIs or routes are overwritten.

With circuit 15 ON, the emergency call system control unit (with code 348 (Emergency call/assist system)) or the HERMES control unit (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) sends the map data as follows to the head unit as soon as this is switched on:

The reception of information is displayed by the head unit by means of a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display. Using the "Import" menu item, the special destinations or routes are copied from the buffer to the navigation system or the address book of the head unit. The head unit transmits the data to the multimedia connection unit, where the data are then stored on the SD card. Only then are the POIs and routes transmitted to the vehicle permanently available in the vehicle.

IMPORTANT Navigation destinations can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB Info call.

IMPORTANT Because of the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs and routes are only available for loading for a limited time period (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs and routes can be made available for loading within the same time period.

IMPORTANT If the point of interest or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly without the point of interest or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.

IMPORTANT POIs that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted to the vehicle using the "Transmit" soft key on the Google Maps web pages.

Load points of interest or routes (With Code 531 (COMAND APS) and except code 494 (USA version)) 

The "Load special destinations and routes" service lists the special destinations and routes that have been sent to the vehicle and makes it possible to transfer them from the clipboard to the navigation system and the address book of the head unit using the "Import" menu item. Special destinations and routes that have been transferred via Google Maps are then only continuously available in the vehicle, if they have been transferred to the navigation system and the address book of the head unit using the "Import" menu item of the "Load special destinations and routes" service. The head unit transmits the data to the multimedia connection unit, where the data are then stored on the SD card.

Points of interests can be loaded but no routes. The special destinations must always be taken from the head unit address book and selected from there as the navigation destination.

IMPORTANT The capacity of the buffer is restricted to 20 routes and 50 points of interest. If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.

IMPORTANT Because of the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs and routes are only available for loading for a limited time period (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs and routes can be made available for loading within the same time period.

IMPORTANT If the POI or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly via the "Navigate" menu entry without the POI or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.

Additional function requirements for free surfing 

Unrestricted surfing 

In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected.

In order to navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor using the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel as though you were using a mouse, or jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next on the current page by turning the Audio/COMAND controller (this highlights the object). A marked link is opened by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel vertically downwards. The "back" button opens the context menu. When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the audio/COMAND display can be used to enter text.

IMPORTANT When surfing, you can jump back a page (as known from the computer) using the "Back" button of the Audio/COMAND control panel. Pressing the "Back" button in the main menu closes the browser.

The head unit transmits the audio signals over the vehicle's speaker system. On vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system), the head unit forwards the audio signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit which actuates the speaker system. On vehicles with CODE 811 (Advanced Sound System), the head unit forwards the audio signals to the Advanced sound system amplifier control unit which actuates the speaker system. Downloads are not supported.

IMPORTANT The Internet browser can process flash and display flash videos on vehicles with CODE 531 (COMAND APS).

IMPORTANT Web pages may appear differently than they do on a PC. This is because some web site providers provide their pages to a mobile browser in a different format that is specially designed for mobile devices, upon which Mercedes-Benz does not have any influence.
