Rear entertainment general
The rear entertainment system is the general entertainment system for passengers in the rear and it is made up mainly of the following components:
- DVD player
- Left rear display
- Right rear display
- Remote control
- Radio frequency headphones (cordless) or cabled headphones
The cabled headphones are not part of the package contents, however a connection is available on the left rear display and right rear display.
The following components are also used by the rear entertainment system but are not essential for using the rear entertainment system:
- COMAND control unit
- Tuner unit (with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio), with CODE 537 (Digital radio (DAB)) or with CODE 865 (TV tuner))
- Sound system amplifier control unit (with CODE 810 (Sound system) or with CODE 811 (Advanced sound system) and vehicle speaker system
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Touchpad
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Hands-free system microphone group for voice control system The rear entertainment is operated by remote control The "Roller" control on the remote control is used to select the respective rear display The control signals are transmitted to the remote control and the respective rear display over the infrared interfaces.
A headphones connection is integrated into the respective rear display to which cabled headphones can then be connected. The volume is adjusted using the "VOL +" and "VOL -" controls on the remote control. Additionally, the preset volume can be changed via the volume control of the particular headphones. With radio frequency headphones, the volume on the radio frequency headphones adjusts itself automatically. The rear entertainment system consists of the following subfunctions:
- Switch on/off characteristics
- System settings
- Disk applications
- AUX applications (except "COMAND" source)
- Use of COMAND controller unit media sources, including TV reception (with CODE 865 (TV tuner))
Switch on/off characteristics
The rear entertainment system is switched on or off using the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control. After switching on, the last application used is then shown on the activated rear display. When switching off, the last application used on the display is stored in the respective rear display.
The rear display that is switched on or off using the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control is dependent on the position of the "Roller" control on the remote control.
The switch on/off characteristic is made up of the following function sequences:
- Function sequence for switching on/off using the remote control
- Function sequence for automatic switch-off through removal of the transmitter key (A8/1)
Function sequence for switching on/off using the remote control
The switch-on signal from the "ON/OFF" control and the position of the "Roller" control are sent over the infrared interface to the remote control and the respective rear display. Each rear display forwards the switch-on signal to the DVD player via telematics CAN. At the same time, the respective display generates the audio and picture signals for the corporate identity (CI) screen for approx. 6 s. The last saved applications are then shown on the respective rear display. The switch-off signal from the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control and the position of the "Roller" control on the remote control are sent to the remote control and to the respective rear display over the infrared interfaces. The respective rear display sends the switch-off signal to the DVD player via telematics CAN.
Function sequence for automatic switch-off through removal of the transmitter key
If the transmitter key on the electronic ignition lock control unit is removed, the respective rear display shows a message stating that the transmitter key has been removed and a prompt appears asking if the application is to be continued. If "Continue" is selected, the function remains active for roughly 30 minutes. The rear entertainment system is then switched off.
If "Continue" is not selected, the rear entertainment system is immediately switched off. The message on the respective rear display is generated by the display itself. The respective rear display uses the received status and the received control signals to generate the display.
The DVD player and the respective rear displays receive the "circuit 15C OFF" status (transmitter key removed) from the electronic ignition lock control unit via the following route:
- Interior CAN
- COMAND control unit
- Telematics CAN
Additional function requirements for system settings
- Rear entertainment system is switched on.
System settings
Additional settings can be made in the "System" menu after switching on, e.g. the following:
- "Language": Selection of system language
- "Brightness" (background illumination from -5 to +5)
- "Display off" (switches off each display, but not a system shutdown)
Additional function requirements for disc applications
- Rear entertainment system is switched on.
- CD or DVD (e.g. audio, video, MP3) is inserted in DVD drive of DVD player.
Disk applications
The active rear display shows the video or audio source in the "Discmenu item. The video or audio source is automatically detected. Disc applications are made up of the following function sequences:
- Function sequence for playing back a disc
- Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for disc applications
Function sequence for playing back a disc
The DVD drive integrated into the DVD player decodes the digital data of the inserted disc and forwards the decoded data internally into the DVD player. The DVD player uses the disc's digital data to generate the analog audio or video signals and the picture signals for the "Disc" menu item user interface on the active rear display. The active rear display shows the menus and submenus in the "Disc" menu item. The active rear display receives the control signals over the infrared interface from the remote control.
Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for disc applications
The DVD player sends analog picture signals over a Y/C line (Y-brightness (luminance)/C - color information (chrominance)) to the active rear display. The active rear display uses them to generate digital picture signals for picture display. Upon reception of the analog audio signals from the DVD player via the stereo line, the respective display generates the digital audio signals. These digital audio signals are sent over the radio interface of the respective rear display to the radio interface for the relevant radio frequency headphones (cordless). Volume can only be adjusted using the volume control integrated in the headphones.
The DVD player also routes the analog audio signals over a stereo line to the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit can output the audio signals either directly over the speaker system (except CODE 810 (Sound system) and except CODE 811 (Advanced sound system)) or via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with CODE 810 (Sound system) or with CODE 811 (Advanced sound system)).
More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" document.
Additional function requirements for AUX applications (except "COMAND" source)
- Rear entertainment system is switched on.
- Video units or audio equipment are connected to the AUX connection of the left rear display, the right rear display or the DVD player.
AUX applications (except "COMAND" source)
Via AUX connections on the rear displays and on the DVD player, additional video and audio equipment (e.g. portable DVD players, cameras, MP3 players or gaming consoles) can be connected to the Rear Seat Entertainment system. An equipment-specific interface is not provided by the respective rear display or by the DVD player in the "AUX" menu item for the video or audio equipment. The video or audio devices are operated using the video or audio device itself.
The connected media sources are played back by the Rear Seat Entertainment system if they have been manually selected via "AUX". If a video source is connected, this is then automatically recognized. The background (headphones) on the active rear display disappears and the video source is played. If an audio source is connected, the background remains on the rear display and the audio source is played. The active rear display shows the recognized video or audio source in the "AUX" menu item.
The "AUX" menu item is only active on a display that is switched on.
The "AUX applications" function in the rear entertainment is made up of the following subfunctions:
- Video unit detected function sequence
- Audio unit detected function sequence
- Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for AUX applications
Video unit detected function sequence
The rear display or the DVD player automatically recognizes the connection of a video unit to an AUX connection.
The display uses the transmitted video unit data to generate the video and audio signals and the digital user interface for the "AUX" menu.
The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective rear display.
Audio unit detected function sequence
The rear display or the DVD player automatically recognizes the connection of audio equipment to an AUX connection.
The rear display uses the audio equipment's transmitted data to generate the audio signals and the digital user interface for the "AUX" menu item. The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display.
Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for AUX applications
The active rear display receives analog picture signals over either the integrated AUX connections or a Y/C line from the DVD player and uses them to generate digital picture signals and display them. The active rear display receives analog audio signals over either the integrated AUX connections or a stereo line from the DVD player and sends them over the integrated radio interface to the radio frequency headphones or routes them to the integrated headphones connection.
Use of COMAND controller unit media sources, including TV reception (with CODE 865 (TV tuner))
The rear entertainment system can also be used to operate COMAND controller unit media sources. A requirement for this is that the media source must be enabled through the "Active source to rear" menu item on the COMAND controller unit for use by the rear entertainment system. The media source of the COMAND controller unit is activated in the rear entertainment by selecting "COMAND" in the "AUX" menu item. Information on the active media source can be displayed and simple control functions executed using the remote control.
If the "Rear Off menu entry is selected in the COMAND controller unit, the media source for the COMAND controller unit is no longer available to the rear entertainment system.
Generally, the Bluetooth® audio media source cannot be used through the rear entertainment system.
The use of COMAND controller unit media sources using the rear entertainment includes the following procedures:
- Function sequence for enabling COMAND controller unit media source
- Function sequence for forwarding audio or video signals Function sequence for enabling COMAND controller unit media source
The following controls can be used to enable a COMAND controller unit media source for the rear entertainment:
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Touchpad
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Hands-free system microphone group, for voice control system The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel and the touchpad are forwarded via telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
The control signals for the left multifunction steering wheel button group or the right multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via the following path:
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN

The voice control system records the voice commands from the hands-free system microphone group and forwards them to the COMAND controller unit.
Function sequence for forwarding audio or video signals
Some media sources such as the radio, memory card or DVD are internally available to the COMAND controller unit. The signals from devices connected to the multimedia connection unit are received by the COMAND controller unit over a direct line.
On vehicles with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio), CODE 537 (Digital radio (DAB)) or CODE 865 (TV tuner) the COMAND controller unit receives the following signals from the tuner unit:
- Audio signals for digital radio (DAB) or TV over MOST
- Video signals (with CODE 865 (TV tuner)) via an LVDS line The COMAND controller unit forwards the audio signals as analog audio signals over a stereo line to the DVD player and the video signals as analog video signals over a Y/C line. The DVD player forwards the analog signals to the active display. The active rear display shows the video signals and forwards the audio signals over the radio interface to the radio frequency headphones or over the headphones connection to cabled headphones.
The control communication between the COMAND controller unit and the DVD player as well as between the DVD player and the active rear display is performed via telematics CAN.
