Function requirements, general

Automatic interior lights control in general

The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination (IBL), the warning and exit illumination and the load compartment illumination.

The appropriate requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the SAM control unit.

The automatic interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:

Additional function requirements for locator lighting

Locator lighting function sequence

For control of the locator lighting the SAM control unit reads in the following signals and evaluates these:

The SAM control unit transmits the request "Switch on locator lighting" via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit, which actuates the following interior illumination components:

When the central locking is unlocked, all lamps are switched off after expiration of t = 40 s or immediately if the vehicle is locked again within t = 3 s after unlocking it.

IMPORTANT If the ambient illumination function is activated through the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on through the central locking when the vehicle is unlocked.

This causes the "Standing lights actuation active" signal to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination. The switch and controls and symbol illumination function is described in detail in a separate function called "Symbol and ambiance illumination, function".

The rear SAM control unit also actuates the following components in a dimmed state:

Additional function requirements for orientation lighting

Function sequence for orientation lighting

For control of the orientation lighting the SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:

The SAM control unit activates the orientation lighting after switching off circuit 15C and actuates the following components (dimmed):

The SAM control unit transmits the request "Switch on orientation lighting" via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit, which actuates the following interior illumination components:

With the vehicle doors closed, all lamps that are on are switched off after approx. t = 20 s. The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster. The respective selection is sent by the instrument cluster via the interior CAN to the SAM control unit.

Additional function requirements for warning and exit illumination

Function sequence for warning and exit illumination

When a vehicle door is opened, the front SAM control unit activates the warning and exit illumination.

The front door control units transmit the status of the front doors (open or closed) to the front SAM control unit via interior CAN.

The rear door control units transmit the status of the rear doors (open or closed) to the SAM control unit via interior CAN.

The SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the warning and exit illumination to the following control units via interior CAN:

The following components of the warning and exit illumination are actuated directly according to the door status:

The rear control unit actuates the following components in accordance with the door status:

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following interior illumination components in accordance with the status of the interior lamp automatic function switch:

The SAM control unit also actuates the following components in an undimmed state:

When all vehicle doors have been closed again and the electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 ON status over the interior CAN, the interior lights are switched off.

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), with circuit 15 Off all the activated lamps are switched off after t = 5 min. when vehicle doors are open, and t = 8 s after the closing of the last vehicle door.

Additional load compartment illumination function requirements

Function sequence for load compartment illumination

If the liftgate is opened, the SAM control unit actuates the load compartment illumination.

The rear control unit sends the status of the liftgate over the interior CAN to the SAM control unit. The SAM control unit then sends the "Load compartment illumination" request over the interior CAN to the rear control unit and over roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit.

The rear control unit actuates the liftgate ambient lamp and, on vehicles with CODE 890 (EASY-PACK liftgate), the liftgate control button symbol illumination.

The SAM control unit actuates the load compartment lamp (model 166.8).

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following interior illumination components:

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery all lights that are on when the liftgate is open and at circuit 15 OFF are switched off after t = 5 minutes.

The load compartment illumination is switched off at:

IMPORTANT The status of the door is evaluated, so that at the end of a journey with open liftgate all previously switched on lamps can be automatically activated again after the automatic shutoff.

Function sequence for interior illumination for ATA [EDW] alarm (with CODE 551 (Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW])))

The interior illumination is activated immediately after an ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered. The master control unit for the ATA [EDW] is the SAM control unit.

On vehicles with CODE 882 (Interior monitoring (ATA [EDW] only)) the anti-theft alarm system/tow-away protection/interior protection control unit sends information on the alarm triggering over the interior CAN to the SAM control unit. If the SAM control unit triggers an alarm, it sends the "Switch on interior illumination" request over the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit.

The overhead control panel control unit then actuates the following interior illumination components:

The SAM control unit also actuates the following components in an undimmed state:

Additional function requirements for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment

Function sequence for interior illumination after accident with airbag deployment

After an accident with airbag deployment, detected by the supplemental restraint system control unit or the crash sensor in the SAM control unit, the SAM control unit activates the interior illumination. The interior illumination is actuated in order to provide better orientation for the occupants and the first aiders following an accident.

The supplemental restraint system control unit sends the crash signal over chassis CAN 1, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the SAM control unit. The SAM control unit receives this and sends the "Switch on interior illumination" request over the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit.

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following interior illumination components with a delay of t = 11 s:

The SAM control unit also actuates the following components in an undimmed state:

The interior illumination is deactivated under the following conditions:
