Exterior lights (ABL), general
The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.
When the transport mode is active, only the basic functions of the exterior lights can be used.
Functions such as the Intelligent Light System or the Adaptive Highbeam Assist (with CODE 640 (High Performance LED) or CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp) are deactivated during the transport mode.

A differentiation is made between the following versions of left front lamp unit and right front lamp unit depending on the vehicle equipment:
- Halogen version lamp units
(Without CODE 640 (High Performance LED) and without CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))
- LED version lamp unit (dynamic)
(With CODE 640 (High performance LED) or CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp), or CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))
The exterior lights comprise the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for thermal management of front lamp unit (with CODE 640 (High performance LED) or CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))
- Function sequence for on-board electrical system increase (without CODE 640 (High performance LED) and without CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))
- Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights

Function sequence for thermal management of front lamp unit (with CODE 640 (High performance LED) or CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))
The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas actuated by the LEDs. If the LEDs or the plastic housings for the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of excessively high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the actuating currents of the LEDs are reduced, thereby lowering the heat development.
For active ventilation, the following additional components are integrated into the front lamp units:
- Left front lamp unit fan motor 1, actuated by the left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting
- Fan motor 2, left front lamp unit, actuated by left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting
- Right front lamp unit fan motor 1, actuated by the right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting
- Fan motor 2, right front lamp unit, actuated by right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting
Both fan motors are always actuated by a front lamp unit. The fan motors are actuated either immediately or with a delay depending on which particular light function is active. The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.
The headlamp control units evaluate the signals of five temperature sensors in each case and actuate the fan motors 1, front lamp unit accordingly.
The front LED exterior lights actuation modules evaluate the signals of three temperature sensors in each case and actuate fan motors 2, front lamp unit accordingly.
Function sequence for on-board electrical system increase (without CODE 640 (High performance LED) and without CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))
When the on-board electrical system voltage is decreased by the energy management below the minimum voltage of a light function during normal driving operation, the SAM control unit can suppress shutoff of the corresponding light function with the aid of the on-board electrical system increase. For this purpose, the SAM control unit requests the minimum voltage necessary for the corresponding light function. The light functions for which the on-board electrical system increase is activated can be defined at the end of production.
The following functions can be coded:
- Actuation of low beams in dark
- Backup light actuation
- Rear fog lights actuation
Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights
Switching off the exterior lights prevents the on-board electrical system battery (G1) from being discharged by the active standing or parking lights actuation.
The low beams are already switched off with circuit 15 Off.
The standing lights may be switched on because the low beams have been manually switched on, because of the auto on/off driving lights manually via the exterior lights switch. If the standing lights are activated because of the manually activated low beams or the auto on/off driving lights and the driver door is then opened at status "circuit 15 C ON", the standing lights are switched off.
As soon as the energy management determines that the engine's starting capability is impaired due to the discharged on-board electrical system battery, the standing lights are switched off.
If the "ambient illumination" function is activated using the COMAND controller unit, this is automatically switched on when the engine is switched off. The standing lights remain on for the configured period from the point at which the last door or the liftgate was closed.
