Remove/Check/Install Front Axle Brake Pads - AR42.10-P-1610GQA

  Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A 
  Risk of injury.  Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove cover over left suspension strut tower    
2 Clean area around cap on expansion reservoir for brake fluid    
3 Undo cap of expansion reservoir for brake fluid    
4 Extract some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the expansion reservoir overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
5 Remove front wheel-and-tire assemblies Model 166.074/874 AP40.10-P-4050EW
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS   Model 292.374/375 AR40.10-P-1100GQC
6 Detach electrical connection for front right brake wear sensor (S10/2x1) from front right brake wear sensor (S10/2)    
7 Remove bolt (30) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt for anti-rattle spring support *BA42.10-P-1005-10L 
8 Remove support (33)    
9 Use suitable tool to drive out retaining pins (41) and remove retaining spring (31d) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace retaining pins (41) if necessary.  
10.1 Pull brake linings (43) out of brake caliper (31a) If the brake linings (43) are not seized.
INSTALLATION NOTES Do not apply any brake paste or lubricants to brake linings (43) and brake calipers (31a). Malfunctions may occur otherwise.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only sets of brake linings (43) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed. Make sure that the brake linings (43) are installed at the correct position.
 
10.2 Push brake linings (43) out of brake caliper (31a) If the brake linings (43) are seized.
INSTALLATION NOTES Do not apply any brake paste or lubricants to brake linings (43) and brake calipers (31a).
Malfunctions may occur otherwise.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only sets of brake linings (43) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed. Make sure that the brake linings (43) are installed at the correct position.

INSPECT Check     
11 Check brake linings (43) for wear and condition Model 166.074/874 AP42.10-P-4253A
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 292.374/375 AP42.10-P-4252B
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   If complaint present

Replace brake linings (43)
 
12 Check brake disks (61) for wear and that they are in good condition Model 166.074/874 AP42.10-P-4258GQ
    Model 292.374/375 AR42.10-P-0120A
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   If complaint present

Replace brake discs (61)
 
13 Check brake caliper (31a) and dust boots of brake piston for leaktightness and damage If complaint present

Replace brake caliper (31a)
AR42.10-P-0070GZ 
14 Secure brake piston against slipping out SPECIAL TOOL Wedge Fig 1
15 Press back brake piston using resetting device IMPORTANT The remaining brake pistons must be secured against slipping out.

Replace brake caliper (31a)
AR42.10-P-0070GZ 
16 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (43) on brake caliper (31a) NOTES Do not damage the brake piston dust boots. Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects.
The brake caliper (31a) must otherwise be replaced.
 
17 Pull right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) out of pad backing plate of brake lining (43) Only when replacing the brake linings (43) or if the front right brake wear sensor (S10/2) is defective.  
18 Install in the reverse order    
  Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
19 Depress brake pedal several times until brake linings (43) lie against brake disks (31a)    
INSPECT Check     
20 Check fluid level in brake fluid reservoir, and correct if necessary    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4210GZ
21 Carry out brake test on the test stand
