Remove/Check/Install Front Axle Brake Pads - AR42.10-P-1600GQ

MODEL 166 (except 166.074/874), 292 (except 292.374/375)

CAUTION Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A 
WARNING Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position Model 166 (except 166.074/874) AR88.40-P-1000GQ
2 Remove cover over left suspension strut tower    
3 Clean the area around the cap of the brake fluid reservoir    
4 Unscrew cap of brake fluid reservoir and extract some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the brake fluid reservoir from overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
5 Remove front wheel-and-tire assemblies    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 166 (except 166.074/874) AP40.10-P-4050EW
    Model 292 (except 292.374/375) AR40.10-P-1100GQC
6 Detach front right brake wear sensor (S10/2) from feed line (1)    
7 Unclip feed line (1) of front right brake wear sensor (S10/2) from bracket (3)    
8 Detach brake hose (4) on bracket (3) Notes on installing brake hoses   AH42.10-P-9406-01GZ 
9 Detach spring plate (5)    
10 Remove dust caps (6)    
11 Remove guide pins TORQUE SPECIFICATION Guide pin to brake caliper support *BA42.10-P-1002-10L 
12 Remove brake caliper (2) with brake pads (7)    
13 Apply padding to brake caliper (2) and attach to vehicle free of tension. Do not tension or kink brake hose (4) and feed line (1).  
14 Take brake pads (7) out of brake caliper (2) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only sets of brake pads (7) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.  
INSPECT Check     
15 Check brake linings (7) for wear and condition    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 166 (except 166.074/874) AP42.10-P-4253A
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 292 (except 292.374/375)
If a problem arises
AP42.10-P-4252B
    Replace brake pads (7) AR42.20-P-0530GZ
16 Check condition of brake disks and inspect for signs of wear    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 166 (except 166.074/874) AP42.10-P-4258GQ
    Model 292 (except 292.374/375)
If a problem arises
AR42.10-P-0120A
    Replace brake disks AR42.10-P-0220GZ 
17 Pull front right brake wear sensor (S10/2) out of pad backing plate
Notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors
  AH42.10-P-0003-01CW 
18 Check front right brake wear sensor (S10/2) for damage    
19 Check guide pin for sluggishness and damage    
20 Check boots for damage and loose seating    
21 Check brake caliper (2) If brake caliper (2) leaky or dust boot damaged

Replace brake caliper (2)
AR42.10-P-0070GZ 
22 Press back brake piston using resetting device SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device
If brake piston is sluggish

    Replace brake caliper (2) AR42.10-P-0070GZ 
23 Check folds of the dust boots of the brake piston IMPORTANT If the dust boot projects beyond the brake piston, position the dust boot correctly.  
CLEANING Clean     
24 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (7) on brake caliper (2) and brake caliper support (8) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT
Do not damage the dust boots and boots of the guide pins. Do not use sharp-edged or pointy tools.
Otherwise, the brake caliper (2) or the brake caliper support (8) can be damaged.
 
25 Apply brake pad paste Model 166 (except 166.074/874) AR42.10-P-0161-01B 
    MB Plastilube brake paste (brownish) *BR00.45-Z-1084-06A 
26 Install in the reverse order    
  Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
27 Operate the brake pedal several times until the brake pads (7) contact the brake disks IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
INSPECT Check     
28 Check fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir, correct if necessary

29 Carry out brake test on the test stand
