Dual Phone
Dual Phone offers the possibility to use two bluetooth-capable mobile phones at the same time in the vehicle. The primary mobile phone can be used in an unrestricted manner. The secondary mobile phone can be used for incoming calls. The phone book entries of the secondary mobile phone are downloaded from the head unit. The contact details of the incoming calls can thus also be shown on the secondary mobile phone.
The mobile phones must be accordingly assigned in the device manager.

Telephony via the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) requires equipment with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony). Instead of the mobile phone cradle (with code 386 (Convenience Telephony), accessories, model 205.0/2 up to 30.11.2015, model 253.9 up to 31.05.2016), or the universal smartphone cradle (with code 386 (Convenience Telephony), model 205.0/2 from 01.12.2015, model 205.3/4, model 253.9 from 01.06.2016, model 253.3), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is inserted into the mobile phone contact plate.
A mobile phone authorized on the head unit can be used as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® audio.

A mobile phone authorized on the head unit can also be used as a modem to access the Internet.
The head unit sends and receives telephone signals over the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit generates the display messages and sends them via an LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display. If the head unit is OFF, it can be activated via the "ON" button in the left lower control panel (manual transmission), or in the right lower control panel (automatic transmission) (except code U78 (AMG Sport exhaust system)). In vehicles with code U78 (AMG Sport exhaust system), the head unit can be switched ON/OFF by pressing the volume adjustment button in the right lower control panel. The left lower control panel (manual transmission), or the right lower control panel (automatic transmission) transmits the "ON" button or volume adjustment button signal via the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel and telematics CAN to the head unit.
The mobile phone system is described using the example of basic telephony. The special considerations for convenience telephony (with code 386 (Convenience Telephony)), and telephony with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)) are summarized at the end of this service information.

Bluetooth®
Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to quickly and easily connect mobile terminals that support the corresponding profiles to the mobile phone system. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. An advantage of Bluetooth® is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The high data security (128 bit encryption), and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of such a Bluetooth® network make its use in the vehicle interesting. The head unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy over the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.
If the mobile phone is not automatically connected with the head unit or the head unit should establish a connection to a different mobile phone, the connection must be manually established via the basic telephone function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. An existing data record must be deleted if a new telephone should be authorized, even though 15 telephones have already been authorized. Detailed information on authorization can be found in the respective operator's manual.
Switch on/off characteristics
The mobile phone is switched ON/OFF via the mobile phone itself. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) must then, where set, be entered in the mobile phone. If the subscriber identification module (SIM) has been authorized, the mobile phone registers with the mobile phone network of the respective provider. The mobile phone network provider and signal level are displayed in the status bar of the Audio/COMAND display. The Bluetooth® setting must be enabled in the mobile phone.
If the mobile phone was manually or automatically switched OFF or if the Bluetooth® setting is switched OFF, the message "Ready for Bluetooth® Telephony" is displayed in the Audio/COMAND display. The head unit then searches again for the last authorized mobile phones.
The head unit can be switched on and off with the "ON" button, the volume adjustment button in the right lower control panel or the volume control button in the left lower control panel.
Call signal
The head unit receives the call signal of the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit then switches the active audio source to "Mute" and shows the caller ID in the Audio/COMAND display. The head unit transmits the corresponding data via the LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display for this purpose. The ringing tone is output via the speaker system. The head unit directly actuates the speaker system or transmits corresponding signals via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)). If the mobile phone supports in-band ringing, the ring tone of the mobile phone is output, a standard ring tone is otherwise output.
Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call
Telephone numbers can be entered using a character bar on the Audio/COMAND display or they can be searched for and selected in call lists or in the address book.
The mobile phone system can be operated using the following components:
- Mobile phone
All activities in the mobile phone are output via the Bluetooth® antenna to the head unit.
- Upper control panel control unit
The upper control panel control unit transmits the operation signals via the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel and telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Audio/COMAND control panel
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals via telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Touchpad (up to 31.05.2015 with code 531 (COMAND APS), code 522 (Audio 20 radio), from 01.06.2015 with code 448 (Touchpad), code 498 (Japan version), or code 494 (USA version))
The touchpad sends the operation signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The operation signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are read in by the steering wheel electronics. The steering wheel electronics transmits these via the steering LIN, steering column tube module control unit, suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the head unit.
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with code 531 (COMAND APS))
The VCS is activated via the left multifunction steering wheel button group. When a call is being established or a call is being accepted, the VCS is automatically switched off. The operation signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering wheel electronics. The steering wheel electronics transmits these via the steering LIN, steering column tube module control unit, suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the head unit.
The voice commands are detected by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the head unit. If necessary, the head unit sends the control signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Call waiting: Call waiting is a performance feature in which the subscriber can switch between two active connections.
Conference connection: Conference connection is a performance feature in which - depending on the type of connection - several subscribers can be interconnected.
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input in the hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone, and forwarded to the head unit. The head unit and the mobile phone communicate with each other via the Bluetooth® antenna. Incoming voice signals are output via the speaker system. The head unit directly actuates the speaker system or transmits corresponding signals via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)).
The volume of the voice outputs can be adjusted e.g. with the volume adjustment button on the right lower control panel, with the volume control button on the left lower control panel or with the volume adjustment button in the right multifunction steering wheel button group.
Phone book
The telephone book contains the telephone entries stored in the head unit. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book. Via the phone book entries, a connection establishment can be directly started or the mobile phone system can be supplied with the saved data.
Read access to the phone book of the mobile phone is provided if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise, data from the phone book of the mobile phone can only be loaded onto the head unit via "vCards".
Address book (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)
The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the head unit. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. Address data of external devices (e.g. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Notebook), or storage media (e.g. Secure Digital (SD) card, Universal Serial Bus (USB) memory) can be saved in the address book and are then permanently available as an address entry.
Address data can be transferred to the address book via the following system components:
- Bluetooth® interface in mobile phone and Bluetooth® antenna
- USB electrical connections (with code 520 (Audio 20 USB), except code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit))
- SD card slot or USB connectors in multimedia connection unit (up to model year 2018 with code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), or code 531 (COMAND APS), from model year 2018)
Address book entries can include the following information:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic notation entry of name in the "Katakana" syllabary) (with code 498 (Japan version))
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- Geo position

The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
Speed-dial list
The speed dial list can contain up to ten telephone numbers that can be assigned with the phone book entries to the numbers 0 to 9. The user can manage the entries using the "Call lists" and "Speed dial list" menu entries. The speed dial list is active only when the "Telephone" menu is active.
"Seamless switch"
"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:
- An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the head unit is switched on and "Private mode" has not been activated on the mobile phone.
- If the head unit is switched OFF during a telephone call, the call is transferred to the mobile phone and can be continued there.
With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the setting "Switch off if connection is interrupted" has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated as a brief connection interruption also occurs.
SMS (except code 498 (Japan version))
The SMS application allows the user to receive, transmit and manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the head unit.
The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receive SMS
- Read SMS messages via the display of the mobile phone and via the Audio/COMAND display
- Read SMS (English or German)
- Write and send SMS
- Delete SMS
- Display inbox list of 30 most recent SMS sorted according to date (each SMS is optionally displayed with the sender or start of text)
The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported. Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.
Once the head unit is connected with the mobile phone, it already receives the SMS saved in the mobile phone and any new incoming SMS via the Bluetooth® antenna. The functions for writing, sending and managing SMS messages are activated through the basic telephone function. The head unit controller unit displays the SMS messages on the Audio/COMAND display via the LVDS line. When reading out the SMS, the head unit directly actuates the speaker system or transmits corresponding signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)).
Comfort telephony (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony)), and telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))
The cellular telephone signals are transmitted and received over the telephone antennas. The connection is realized via the telephone antenna splitter, the telephone and stationary heater antenna changeover switch (from 01.06.2016 with code B24 (Remote control for stationary heater)), cellular telephone system antenna amplifier/compensator (from 01.06.2016 except for code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))), and the mobile phone contact plate in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the armrest. In vehicles with code 386 (Convenience Telephony), and except code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)), a suitable mobile phone cradle (accessory, model 205.0/2 up to 30.11.2015, model 253.9 up to 31.05.2016), or a universal smartphone cradle (model 205.0/2 as of 01.12.2015, model 205.3/4, model 253.9 as of 01.06.2016, model 253.3) is inserted in the mobile phone contact plate and then the respective mobile phone in the mobile phone cradle. In vehicles with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is connected to the mobile phone contact plate.
The mobile phone contact plate fulfills the following functions:
- Connection of mobile phone or telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))) to the telephone antennas
- Power supply for mobile phone or telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)))
- Forwarding of wake-up signal from the head unit
The connection to the head unit (via Bluetooth®) is realized via the mobile phone or the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))).
The mobile phone system supports the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile radio standard.

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP).
Where the universal smartphone cradle (with code 386 (Convenience Telephony), model 205.0/2 from 01.12.2015, model 205.3/4, model 253.9 from 01.06.2016, model 253.3) is used, the mobile phone is not charged via the mobile phone contact plate. To be charged, the mobile phone must also be connected via a charging cable included in the scope of supply to the multimedia connection unit (up to model year 2018 with code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), or code 531 (COMAND APS), from model year 2018).
The telephone signals can be forwarded to the head unit from the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))) via two different routes:
- The data transfer rate via the Bluetooth® connection is limited via the Bluetooth® antenna.
- Via the multimedia connection unit (up to model year 2018 with code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), or code 531 (COMAND APS), from model year 2018), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) must be connected via USB with the multimedia connection unit. The data transfer rate is significantly higher.
The telephony exhibits the following properties:
- PIN prompt
- Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)))
- SMS
PIN prompt
Once the mobile phone has been switched on, a PIN prompt is output where this is set in the mobile phone. This process is displayed in the Audio/COMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls. For the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))), the PIN for a connected telephone or the SIM card can be stored so that it does not have to be entered again when the phone is switched on.
Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)))
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) must be authorized in order to be able to use it in the vehicle:
- Press button with LED on telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) changes to "Pairing" mode.
- In the Telephone menu, select the "Connect MB SAP module" entry. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is connected with the vehicle.
With an inserted SIM card, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is a fully-functional communication module.
Without a SIM card the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can use the SIM card of another mobile phone in the vehicle. The required SIM card data is transmitted via Bluetooth® to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).
Mobile phones that should be used for the telephony with the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) must support and be authorized for SAP. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized. Once the head unit has been switched on, an automatic search is performed for the last two SAP telephones used in the vehicle and the first that responds is connected.
The following requirements must be fulfilled here:
- The mobile phone is not connected via Bluetooth® to any other device.
- There is no SIM card in the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).
Where required, the mobile phone can be charged via a USB port in the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile), and be used for installing software updates, e.g. with a USB memory (USB flash drive). Via a second USB port in the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile), the data transfer to the head unit is realized via the multimedia connection unit (up to model year 2018 with code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), or code 531 (COMAND APS), from model year 2018). The update files and the procedure are made available to the customer on the Internet.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is Internet capable when the mobile phone contract includes a data option.
A ring tone can be selected for the respective SIM card or SAP telephone from a list of ring tones.
SMS
Mobile phones provide two memories for SMS messages: one on the telephone and one on the SIM card. As long as the mobile phone is used for telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)), incoming SMS messages on the mobile phone can only be stored on the SIM card. Storing incoming SMS messages on the SIM card can lead to the following problems:
- SMS messages that have been received while the mobile phone was connected to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) are frequently not displayed in the mobile phone's SMS input.
- The memory on the SIM card is limited. Incoming SMS messages cannot be stored and displayed when the memory is full.
