Mobile Phone System, Function - GF82.70-P-0007FG

Information on touchpad The touchpad is installed in two variants.

Variant (with code 448 (Touchpad)): The touchpad is installed together with the Audio/COMMAND control panel. The touchpad is connected only to the telematics CAN.

Variant 2 (with code 446 (Touchpad only)): The touchpad is installed instead of the Audio/COMMAND control panel. In this case, the upper control panel control unit, the left lower control panel and right lower control panel are connected to the touchpad via UBF-LIN. The touchpad is also connected to the telematics CAN.

Function requirements, general 

IMPORTANT If a smartphone is integrated in the vehicle using Android Auto, telephone calls can be made only via this smartphone.

Mobile telephone system, general 

Equipment and use variants of mobile phone system:

All variants use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer.

IMPORTANT An authorized mobile phone can also be used as a modem for accessing the Internet or as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® audio.

The head unit sends and receives telephone signals over the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit also generates display messages and transmits the corresponding data to the Audio/COMMAND display via the HSVL line. If the head unit is not switched on, it can be activated via the "ON" button in the respective lower control panel. The lower control panel transmits the status of the "ON" button to the head unit via the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) and telematics CAN.

IMPORTANT The mobile phone system is described using the example of basic telephony. The special equipment features are summarized at the end of this document.

The mobile phone system includes the following areas:

Bluetooth® 

Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to quickly and easily connect mobile terminals that support the corresponding profiles to the mobile phone system. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The relatively high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of a Bluetooth® network also make the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting. The head unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy over the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.

IMPORTANT If the mobile phone is not connected with the head unit automatically or if the head unit is to establish a connection with a different mobile phone, the connection must be established manually via the basic telephone function. Authorized mobile phones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized mobile phones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. If a new mobile phone is to be authorized when there are already 15 authorized mobile phones, the user is prompted to delete one of the existing data records. Detailed information on authorization can be found in the respective operator's manual.

Switch on/off characteristics 

The mobile phone is switched ON/OFF via the mobile phone itself. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) must then, where set, be entered in the mobile phone. If the subscriber identification module (SIM) has been authorized, the mobile phone registers with the mobile phone network of the respective provider. The mobile phone network provider and signal level are displayed in the status bar of the Audio/COMMAND display. The Bluetooth® setting must be enabled in the mobile phone.

If the mobile phone was manually or automatically switched off or if the Bluetooth® setting is switched off, the message "Ready for Bluetooth® Telephony" is displayed on the Audio/COMMAND display. The head unit then searches again for the last authorized mobile phones.

The head unit can be switched on or off using the "ON" button on the respective lower control panel.

Call signal 

The head unit receives the call signal of the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit then switches the active audio source to "Mute" and shows the caller ID in the Audio/COMMAND display. To do this, the head unit transmits the corresponding data to the Audio/COMMAND display via the HSVL line. The ringing tone is output via the speaker system. The head unit activates the speaker system directly or transmits the corresponding signals to one of the following devices via MOST:

If the mobile phone supports in-band ringing, the ring tone of the mobile phone is output, a standard ring tone is otherwise output.

Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call 

Telephone numbers can be entered using a character bar on the Audio/COMMAND display or they can be searched for and selected in call lists or in the address book.

The mobile phone system can be operated using the following components:

IMPORTANT The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

IMPORTANT Call waiting: Call waiting is a performance feature in which the subscriber can switch between two active connections.

IMPORTANT Conference connection: Conference connection is a performance feature in which - depending on the type of connection - several subscribers can be interconnected.

Using the phone in hands-free mode 

The voice input in the hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the head unit. The head unit and the mobile phone communicate with each other via the Bluetooth® antenna. Incoming voice signals are output via the speaker system. The head unit activates the speaker system directly or transmits the corresponding signals to one of the following devices via MOST:

The volume of the voice outputs can be adjusted using the following control elements, for example:

Address book 

The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the head unit. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. Address data of external devices (e.g. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Notebook) or storage media (e.g. Secure Digital (SD) card, Universal Serial Bus (USB) memory) can be saved in the address book and are then permanently available as an address entry.

Address data can be transferred to the address book via the following system components:

The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".

SMS/email (except code 498 (Japan version)) 

The SMS/email application enables the user to receive, send or manage SMS messages and emails. To do so, the SMS messages and emails previously received on the mobile phone as well as any new incoming SMS messages and emails are forwarded to the head unit. The following SMS and email functions are available:

The SMS and email function with basic telephony requires support of the Message Access Profile (MAP). Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages or emails in the mobile phone.

Once the head unit is connected with the mobile phone, it receives the SMS messages already saved in the mobile phone and any new incoming SMS messages and emails via the Bluetooth® antenna. The functions for writing, sending and managing SMS messages or emails are called up through the basic telephone function. The head unit shows them on the Audio/COMMAND display over the HSVL line. When reading out SMS and emails, the head unit actuates the speaker system directly or sends the corresponding signals to one of the following devices via MOST:

Telephony (with code 386 (Comfort telephony) or code 379 (telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP))) 

The cellular telephone signals are transmitted and received over the telephone antennas. The connection is made via the telephone antenna splitter, the cellular telephone system antenna amplifier/compensator (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)) up to 31.05.2016) and the mobile phone contact plate in the center console under the armrest.

In vehicles with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) is connected to the mobile phone contact plate.

In vehicles with code 386 (Comfort telephony) and code 520 (Audio 20 USB) or code 522 (Audio 20 radio)), the universal smartphone cradle is connected to the mobile phone contact plate. The respective mobile phone can be inserted into the universal smartphone cradle.

IMPORTANT An antenna for inductive transmission of the telephone signals to the mobile phone is integrated in the universal smartphone cradle. The mobile phone is not charged by the universal smartphone cradle. For charging purposes, the mobile phone can be connected to the multimedia connection unit via a USB connection cable.

The mobile phone contact plate fulfills the following functions:

IMPORTANT The mobile phone system does not support the Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular telephone system standard.

IMPORTANT Model 213 up to model year 2021 with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)) The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP), the MAP and the Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).

The connection to the head unit (via Bluetooth®) is made using the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) itself.

The telephone signals can be forwarded to the head unit by the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) via two different routes:

Telephony with code 386 (Convenience Telephony) or code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)) includes the following additional special features:

PIN prompt 

Once the mobile phone has been switched on, a PIN prompt is output where this is set in the mobile phone. This process is displayed in the Audio/COMMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls. For a telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP), the PIN of a connected telephone or the SIM card can be stored so that it does not need to be entered again when switched on.

Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))) 

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) must be authorized in order to be able to use it in the vehicle:

With an inserted SIM card, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is a fully-functional communication module. Without a SIM card the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can use the SIM card of another mobile phone in the vehicle. The required SIM card data is transmitted via Bluetooth® to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).

Mobile phones that should be used for the telephony with the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) must support and be authorized for SAP. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized. Once the head unit has been switched on, an automatic search is performed for the last two SAP telephones used in the vehicle and the first that responds is connected. The following requirements must be fulfilled here:

IMPORTANT Where required, the mobile phone can be charged via a USB port in the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) and be used for installing software updates, e.g. with a USB memory (USB flash drive). A second USB connector on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) is used to realize the data transfer over the multimedia connection unit to the head unit. The update files and the procedure are made available to the customer on the Internet.

IMPORTANT The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is Internet capable when the mobile phone contract includes a data option.

A ring tone can be selected for the respective SIM card or SAP telephone from a list of ring tones.

SMS 

State of the art mobile phones come with two memories for SMS messages: one on the telephone and one on the SIM card. As long as the mobile phone is used for telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)), incoming SMS messages on the mobile phone can only be stored on the SIM card. Storing incoming SMS messages on the SIM card can lead to the following problems:

Telephony (with code 380 (car telephony package) or code 899 (Multifunction telephony)) 

The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse when the head unit is switched on. The cellular telephone signals are transmitted and received over the telephone antennas. The connection is made via the telephone antenna splitter and the telephone control unit (with code 380 (car telephony package)) and via the telephone antenna splitter, the cellular telephone system antenna amplifier/compensator (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)) and the mobile phone cradle control unit (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)).

In vehicles with code 899 (Multifunction telephony), the mobile phone must be placed onto the mobile phone cradle control unit in order to communicate via the antenna connection.

The following connection priorities apply if the equipment with code 380 (car telephony package) and code 899 (Multifunction telephony) is combined:

IMPORTANT Priority 3: A mobile phone is in the Bluetooth® signal range.

IMPORTANT The mobile phone system supports the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile radio standard.

Vehicles with code 380 (car telephony package) 

The head unit transmits the telephone signals via the Bluetooth® antenna and the Internet signals via the WLAN antenna to the telephone control unit. The telephone control unit transmits the encrypted data to the mobile phone network via the telephone antenna splitter and the telephone antenna.

Vehicles with code 899 (Multifunction telephony) 

The mobile phone cradle control unit fulfills the following functions:

Near-field communication and the charging process are supported.

PIN prompt 

Once the mobile phone has been switched on, a PIN prompt is output where this is set in the mobile phone. This process is displayed in the Audio/COMMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls.

Near-field communication (NFC) (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)) 

NFC is an international transmission standard for the wireless exchange of data via radio over very short distances (a few centimeters). Authorized mobile phones that are placed on the mobile phone cradle control unit and which support the NFC standard can be connected to the mobile phone system quickly and easily using NFC. The mobile phone and the head unit then communicate via the Near Field Communication antenna, the mobile phone cradle control unit and the telematics CAN.

Connection priority (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)) 

The head unit can integrate authorized mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via NFC or through Bluetooth®, provided it is activated for the mobile phone. NFC uses the NFC interfaces of the mobile phone and the mobile phone cradle control unit as well as the Near Field Communication antenna on the mobile phone cradle control unit. Bluetooth® communication uses the Bluetooth® interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth® antenna.

The head unit differentiates between the following connection priorities:

  1. The mobile phone is placed on the mobile phone cradle control unit and logged in via NFC.
  2. The mobile phone is in the Bluetooth® signal range.

    The head unit automatically searches over the Bluetooth® connection for the last two connected mobile phones, and then connects to the mobile phone that responds first.

    If the mobile phone is not connected with the head unit automatically or if the head unit is to establish a connection with a different mobile phone, the connection must be established manually via the basic telephone function. Authorized mobile phones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized mobile phones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. If a new mobile phone is to be authorized when there are already 15 authorized mobile phones, the user is prompted to delete one of the existing data records.     Charging process (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)) 

    The following options are available for charging the mobile phone:

    • Inductive: If the mobile phone supports the Qi standard for the wireless charging process, it can be placed on the contact surface of the mobile phone cradle control unit and is charged inductively.
    • With a charging cable: If the mobile phone does not support the Qi standard for the wireless charging process, a charging cable can be connected to the front center console USB port.
