Symbol and ambiance illumination in general

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior. Symbol and ambiance illumination encompasses the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for search and symbol illumination

Activating the switch and controls and symbol illumination makes it easier for the vehicle occupants to find important controls and to look for objects in the vehicle without having to switch on the ignition or the exterior lights to do so.

The search and symbol illumination is switched on by unlocking the vehicle remotely, by opening a vehicle door or by changing the status of circuit 15. The luminosity to be used to implement the search and symbol illumination can be continuously adjusted using the instrument illumination brightness control on the exterior lights switch. The front SAM control unit reads in the signals from the instrument illumination brightness control directly and sends them via interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

After unlocking the vehicle or opening a vehicle door, the search and symbol illumination is switched on with 100 % luminosity.

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking system and the status of circuit 15 over the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The front door control units send the status of the front doors (open or closed) via interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The rear door control units send the status of the rear doors (open or closed) via interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster evaluates all incoming information, generates the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the user interface CAN to the following control units to activate the search and symbol illumination:

The electronic ignition lock control unit actuates the following component:

The head unit activates the integrated controls and sends the circuit 58d signal over the telematics CAN to the following control units, which then switch on the integrated controls:

The Audio/COMMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or the touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or code 448 (Touchpad)) transmits the circuit 58d signal via the LCP LIN to the following control panels, which then actuate the integrated controls:

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 58d signal via the chassis FlexRay to the steering column tube module control unit. The steering column tube module control unit actuates the following components:

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:

The climate control, control unit actuates the search and symbol illumination of the following components via A/C operating LIN:

The left front door control unit actuates the following components:

The right front door control unit actuates the following components:

The left rear door control unit actuates the following components:

The right rear door control unit actuates the following components:

IMPORTANT The door handle illumination is actuated after circuit 15C has been switched off for an additional 2 min (run-on).

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following components:

IMPORTANT The overhead control panel control unit directly actuates the eyeglasses box illumination irrespective of the circuit 58d signal from a circuit 15R ON status onwards.

Trunk lid/liftgate control button (model 213.0/1 with code 881 (Remote trunk closing), model 213.2 with code 890 (EASY-PACK liftgate):

The rear SAM control unit actuates the trunk lid/liftgate control button at the trunk lid or the liftgate directly when the trunk lid or liftgate is open, independently of the circuit 58d signal. The rear SAM control unit independently evaluates the status of the trunk lid or the liftgate (open or closed).

Trunk lid emergency opening switch symbol illumination (model 213.0 with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version)):

The rear SAM control unit actuates the trunk lid emergency opening switch directly irrespective of the circuit 58d signal. The trunk lid emergency opening switch is actuated with a frequency of 1 Hz after the trunk lid has been closed for 60 min and flashes in green. The rear SAM control unit independently evaluates the status of the trunk lid (open or closed).

Function sequence for ambiance illumination (with CODE 877 (Ambiance illumination))

The ambient lighting is switched on by unlocking the vehicle remotely, by opening a vehicle door or by changing the status of circuit 15. In the process, different areas of the vehicle interior are illuminated indirectly. The luminosity and the color in which the ambiance illumination is to be designed can be adjusted using a corresponding menu in the head unit. The following zones can also be selected via this menu:

The luminosity can be set in several stages. 64 different colors can be selected.

IMPORTANT Model 213 up to model year 2021 with code 464 (Instrument cluster 12.3" diagonal)

Certain color and brightness setting combinations (color values) can be stored assigned to the instrument cluster's display style (SPORT, CLASSIC, PROGRESSIVE). Thus an assigned ambient lighting color value can be activated by selecting a display style in the instrument cluster. As of 01.06.2017 the choice as to whether this assignment should go ahead can be configured in the instrument cluster.

The head unit transmits the relevant information about these settings via the user interface CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the ambiance illumination control unit.

IMPORTANT After a vehicle door is opened, the ambiance illumination is actuated with 100_% luminosity.

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking and the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN to the ambiance illumination control unit.

The ambiance illumination is deactivated 3 s after the vehicle is locked.

The ambient lighting control unit evaluates all incoming information and then actuates the following component parts:

Over left front door ambient lighting LIN:

Over right front door ambient lighting LIN:

Over left rear door ambiance illumination LIN:

Over right rear door ambiance illumination LIN:

Over cockpit ambient lighting LIN:

Over vehicle interior ambient lighting LIN:

Over roof ambient lighting LIN:

IMPORTANT The door handle illumination is actuated after circuit 15C has been switched off for an additional 2 min (run-on).
