Function requirements, general 

IMPORTANT The SD card must be authorized for the head unit.

Map navigation, general 

The head unit processes the following input information:

The acoustic driving information is output by the head unit via the front speaker system. If necessary, the head unit reduces the volume of any active audio sources.

On AMG vehicles except code 810 (Sound system) as of 01.06.2018, the head unit sends the voice output via MOST to the Midline sound system amplifier control unit.

In vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system), the head unit transmits the voice output via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit.

The navigation cards and the visual driving instructions are shown on the audio/COMMAND display. Driving instructions and menu displays can also be shown on the instrument cluster. The head unit generates the displays using the SD card data provided by the multimedia connection unit.

IMPORTANT Updates on the SD card takes are downloaded externally on an Internet-capable PC; this is described in the operator's manual.

IMPORTANT Model 213 up to model year 2021 with code 357 (Map navigation) with code 506 (Audio 20 NTG 5.5 radio)

The map navigation also has the following new properties: Faster processor, search function, acceptance of navigation destinations from the address book and the MB Companion App, support of Car-to-X-Communication telematics service.

Function sequence for map navigation 

The head unit accesses the map data stored on the SD card.

IMPORTANT When the SD card is used for the first time in the vehicle, data is written to a configuration file on the SD card by the head unit.

IMPORTANT As GPS operates in the gigahertz range and the signals are weak, the following events may lead to reception interference: Atmospheric interference (e.g.bad weather, water vapor, fog), multiple reception through signal reflections (e.g.on building walls) or signal shadowing (e.g.in built-up areas, in tunnels, in the vicinity of tall buildings of trees).

In the event of a failure of the GPS signals, the head unit reverts back to the basic position finding. For basic position finding, the head unit evaluates the data from the integrated gyro sensor as well as the reverse gear signal and the wheel speed signals.

The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the reverse gear signal to the head unit via the user interface CAN.

The Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits the wheel speed signals to the head unit via the chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN.

IMPORTANT Location faults during position finding, rolling backward with circuit 15 OFF or vehicle transportation falsify basic position finding. In both instances, the deviation is automatically corrected by the navigation processor integrated in the head unit upon reception of GPS data. The upper control panel control unit (with code 246 (Analog clock)) sends the operation signals over the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMMAND control panel and telematics CAN to the head unit.

The steering wheel electronics read in the operation signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups directly. The steering wheel electronics forwards the signals via the following route:

The steering column tube module control unit sends the control signals over the chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster transmits the operation signals to the head unit via the user interface CAN.

The Audio/COMMAND control panel or the touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad)) sends the control signals to the head unit over the telematics CAN.

The voice inputs are recorded by the driver hands-free system microphone and processed further directly by the head unit.

The lower control panel transmits the control signals from the volume control button to the head unit via the UBF-LIN, Audio/COMMAND control panel and telematics CAN.

The head unit transmits a switch-on request via the telematics CAN and the generated picture data via the HSVL line to the Audio/COMMAND display.

The head unit transmits the information for the display in the instrument cluster to the instrument cluster via the user interface CAN. On vehicles with code 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio) and code 522 (Audio 20 radio) the real-time traffic data (RTTD) are received by the SDAR antenna, processed by the tuner unit and sent over MOST to the head unit.

On vehicles with code 367 (Live Traffic Information) and valid subscription for real-time traffic data, the HERMES control unit receives the real-time traffic data via the emergency call system 1 antenna (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) or the emergency call system 2 antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) from the service provider as long as the vehicle is within the geographical region for which the traffic data service is being provided.

The HERMES control unit sends the real-time traffic data as follows:

The HERMES control unit receives position data from the head unit at regular intervals in the opposite direction. The HERMES control unit sends the position data from the head unit over the emergency call system 1 antenna (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) over the emergency call system 2 antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) to the service provider. The HERMES control unit thereby contributes to gathering the traffic information from which the SD card navigation then again benefits.

IMPORTANT At the end of the subscription or outside of the geographical area for which the traffic data service is offered, the radio traffic messages are evaluated for dynamic route guidance.

Without subscription or outside the geographical region for which the traffic data service is being provided, the head unit evaluates the radio traffic announcements (e.g. TMC) for dynamic route guidance. The radio traffic announcements are sent within the head unit from the integrated DAB FM radio tuners to the navigation processor.
