Manual interior lights control in general

The manual interior lights control makes it possible to switch the interior illumination, the reading illumination, the mirror lamps and the glove compartment illumination on and off.

The manual interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for interior illumination

The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the dome lamp buttons and sends it via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

The following components of the interior illumination are switched on or off manually by operating the front dome lamp button:

The following components of the interior illumination are switched on or off manually by operating the rear dome lamp button:

As of 01.06.2017, the interior lighting in the rear passenger compartment can also be switched on and off via voice control in vehicles with code 531 (COMMAND APS). For this purpose, the driver hands-free system microphone is read directly by the head unit. The head unit processes the voice signals and sends the operation signals via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

IMPORTANT Model 213 as of 6/1/17 up to model year 2021 with code 531 (COMMAND APS)

Detailed information on voice control is available in a separate document.

The following components are also directly actuated by the front SAM control unit in vehicles except code 877 (Ambiance illumination):

In vehicles with code 877 (Ambiance illumination), the front SAM control unit transmits the request for switching on the footwell lamps via the interior CAN to the ambiance illumination control unit. The ambiance illumination control unit then actuates the following components over the vehicle interior ambiance illumination-LIN:

IMPORTANT If the automatic interior lights control is activated after opening a door, it can be switched off manually using the respective reading lamp button. The respective area is then switched off completely.

Function sequence for reading illumination

The reading illumination serves to illuminate a defined area in front of the user, without having a distracting dazzling effect on the driver. The overhead control panel control unit reads in the status of the relevant reading lamp button directly and transmits this via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the reading illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

The following reading lamp components can be switched on or off manually by pressing the relevant reading lamp button:

IMPORTANT Model 213.1 up to model year 2021 with code U05 (Vanity mirror in the rear)

When the rear dome lamp buttons are first pressed, the rear vanity mirror dome lamps are actuated along with the rear reading lamps. When the rear dome lamp buttons are pressed a second time, only the rear reading lamps are actuated.

As of 01.06.2017, the left reading lamp and right reading lamp can also be switched on and off via voice control in vehicles with code 531 (COMMAND APS).

Function sequence for mirror lamps

The following mirror lamp components can be manually switched on or off by opening or closing the corresponding mirror covers:

The overhead control panel control unit reads in the status of the rear vanity mirror illumination switches directly and transmits this via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit transmits the request to switch on the mirror lamps via the interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), the power supply is interrupted 30 min. after circuit 15 OFF. The power supply for the left sun visor mirror lamp and the right sun visor mirror lamp is switched off when the vehicle is locked using the central locking (CL [ZV]) system.

Additional function requirements for glove compartment illumination

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 to the front SAM control unit via interior CAN.

Function sequence for glove compartment illumination

The glove compartment lamp switch is supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit. Voltage is switched through to the glove compartment lamp by opening the glove compartment door.

After switching off circuit 15C, the glove compartment lamp is switched off after 40 s.
