Internet connection, general
The head unit controls the Internet connection. Depending on the equipment installed, the Internet connection is established through the HERMES control unit (with code 362 (HERMES LTE) or code 360 (HERMES UMTS)) or through the mobile phone system. The following conditions apply here:
- With code 380 (Car telephony package) and HERMES control unit (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or code 362 (HERMES LTE)): Internet access optionally through the mobile phone system or the HERMES control unit (selected on head unit)
- With code 494 (USA version): Internet access via the HERMES control unit
- With code 520 (Audio 20 USB): Internet access via the mobile phone system
- All other vehicles:
- With code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or code 362 (HERMES LTE): Internet access via HERMES control unit
- Except code 360 (HERMES UMTS) and except code 362 (HERMES LTE): Internet access via mobile phone system
The following controls can be used for operation of the function:
Audio/COMMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only))
- The Audio/COMMAND control panel transmits the control signals via telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad))
The touchpad transmits the operation signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
The operation signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering wheel electronics. The steering wheel electronics sends this as of 01.06.2018, over the steering wheel CAN, up to 31.05.2018, over the steering LIN to the steering column tube module control unit and from there over the suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster transmits the control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups to the head unit via the user interface CAN.
- Voice control system (VCS) (with code 531 (COMMAND APS) or with code 357 (Map navigation))
The VCS (with code 531 (COMMAND APS) or with code 357 (Map navigation)) is activated using the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. The voice commands are detected by the driver hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the head unit via a direct line.

To ensure successful certificate exchange, the head unit synchronizes the date and time. The head unit used for this purpose the received global navigation system (GPS) signals.

To ensure successful certificate exchange, the head unit synchronizes the date and time with the manual instrument cluster settings.
Operation of all functions is described in the following using the Audio/COMMAND control panel as an example.
The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Internet access (dial-in) via the HERMES control unit
- Internet access (dial-in) via the mobile phone system
- Internet usage
Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-in) via the HERMES control unit
- The Internet access service is authorized and the HERMES control unit is configured using the telephone number of the service provider.
- The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center.
- No prioritized service (emergency call (manual or automatic), MB information call, breakdown assistance) is activated.
Internet access (dial-in) via the HERMES control unit
The function is activated by calling up the "System" menu on the Audio/COMMAND display. It is also possible to directly access the browser via the "Back" button. The head unit generates the image data for display on the Audio/COMMAND display and sends them over the HSVL line to the Audio/COMMAND display.
The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server for protected data traffic in order to connect to the Internet. This means that when surfing the net and using services, the user is only identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway and cannot be located in the network. Data such as updates of map data, Internet radio or data via the in-car hotspot is not routed via the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway. The head unit transmits the data as follows to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway:

Model 213 up to model year 2021 with code 362 (HERMES communications module LTE)
The HERMES control unit uses two antennas simultaneously for sending and receiving to achieve transmission and reception diversity. According to the requests from the head unit, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and the service providers via the Internet and transmits the received data in the opposite direction to the head unit.
Activating a manual or automatic emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB info call can interrupt the Internet connection.
Additional function requirements: Internet access (dial-in) via the mobile phone system
- With CODE 386 (Comfort telephony)
The mobile phone is located in the universal smartphone cradle and is connected to the head unit.
- With code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)) The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is placed on the mobile phone contact plate and connected to the head unit.
- With code 380 (Car telephony package)
The telephone control unit is selected for the Internet connection, a suitable Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card is inserted or the telephone control unit can access a mobile phone SIM card via the SIM Access Profile (SAP).
- With code 899 (Multifunction telephony)
The mobile phone is located on the mobile phone cradle control unit and connected to the head unit.
If the mobile phone supports the Personal Area Network (PAN) profile, Internet sharing must be activated.
- The mobile telephone network provider allows the mobile phone to be used for data services.
- The mobile telephone network provider allows Secure Socket Layer encryption with the mobile phone.
Internet access (dial-in) via the mobile phone system
Depending on the equipment, one of the following components is used as a modem:
- Mobile phone, which is connected to the head unit (basic telephony or code 386 (Comfort telephony) or code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
- Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)))
- Telephone control unit (with code 380 (Car telephony package)) The function is activated by calling up the "System" menu on the Audio/COMMAND display. It is also possible to directly access the browser via the "Back" button. The mobile telephone network provider must first be selected at the head unit in vehicles with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)) and mobile phones supporting the Dial-up Networking (DUN) profile. When using mobile phones that support the PAN profile, the dial-up data of the mobile telephone network provider entered into the mobile phone are used. The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Further access information is required (e.g. on the tariff) that can be obtained from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.
If the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))) or the telephone control unit (with code 380 (Car telephony package)) is operated without its own SIM card, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) or the telephone control unit with the SIM access profile accesses the mobile phone's SIM card via Bluetooth®.
Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the option of separating the connection via the "System" menu make cost management easier in time as well as data volume contracts.
Basic telephony
Data are exchanged with the head unit over the Bluetooth® antenna. The mobile phone sends the encrypted data to the mobile telephone network.
With code 386 (Convenience Telephony) or code 899 (Multifunction telephony)
Data are exchanged with the head unit over the Bluetooth® antenna. The mobile phone transmits the encrypted data as follows to the mobile telephone network:

The data can be transmitted in two different ways from the head unit to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). If the telephone module is connected with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) to the multimedia connection unit, USB port 1 or USB port 2, the maximum data transfer rate can be used. Otherwise, the mobile phone and head unit communicate with each other via Bluetooth®. In this case, the data rate is much lower.

Multiple use of the mobile phone: Multiple functions can be processed simultaneously via mobile phones suitable for Internet access, i.e. it is possible to make phone calls while connected to the Internet. However, this depends on the quality of the respective network. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.
Internet usage
The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:
- Use of services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or code 362 (HERMES LTE))
- Unrestricted surfing
- In-car hotspot
The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary. The instrument cluster transmits the vehicle speed via the interior CAN to the head unit.
To issue audio signals, the head unit actuates the speaker system directly or transmits the corresponding signals to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)) or to the Advanced sound system amplifier control unit (with code 811 (Advanced sound system)) or to the Midline sound system amplifier control unit (AMG vehicles as of 01.06.2018 except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced sound system)) via MOST. Picture content (no flash) is shown on the Audio/COMMAND display.
Use of services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or code 362 (HERMES LTE))
The function is activated by calling up the menu with the online services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway on the Audio/COMMAND display.
The individual services and the options for the services can now be actuated in the same way using the Audio/COMMAND control panel. The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the head unit as have the design of the displays on the Audio/COMMAND display so that operation is essentially intuitive.
The Audio/COMMAND control panel transmits the control signals via telematics CAN to the head unit. The head unit generates the image data for display on the Audio/COMMAND display and sends them over the HSVL line to the Audio/COMMAND display.
In vehicles except for code 494 (USA version) and except for code 498 (Japan version), Vodafone GmbH settles the costs according to the amount of data consumed. If usage varies from month to month, cost settlement via a data contract is required. If the monthly data volume is the same, e.g. downloading of map data, a simple contract is sufficient.
The following services can be used for example via the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway with code 357 (Map navigation) or code 531 (COMMAND APS):

Search for points of interest
Search terms can be selected from lists or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for a search term at the current location, at the navigation destination or at an arbitrary location (free entry).
The area that is being searched is defined under "Options". The search results appear in the form of a list. If the list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up. Search results can be stored in the address book (with code 531 (COMMAND APS)) or under "Personal POIs" on the Secure Digital (SD) card in the SD card slot of the multimedia connection unit. A selected search result can be transferred to the navigation system, and in this case the head unit switches to the navigation menu.
Weather
Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map.
In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed.
However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition, city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the audio/COMMAND display. The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed.
The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.
Weather data is sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.

POIs or routes that have been sent to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. via Google Maps) are also transmitted to the vehicle via the Service Center.

A maximum of 100 POIs and 30 routes each with up to 255 route points can be stored. If the capacity of the buffer is exceeded, the oldest POIs or routes are overwritten.

The capacity of the buffer is restricted to 20 routes and 50 points of interest. If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.

Because of the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs and routes are only available for loading for a limited time period (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs and routes can be made available for loading within the same time period.
If circuit 15 is ON, The HERMES control unit transfers the points of interest or routes to the diagnostic CAN the electronic ignition lock control unit the user interface CAN → the head unit, if it is switched on.
The reception of information is displayed by the head unit by means of a pop-up window on the Audio/COMMAND display.
Navigation data can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB Info call.
Additional function requirements for load points of interest or routes (except code 360 (HERMES UMTS) and except code 362 (HERMES LTE))
- SD card located in the SD card slot on the multimedia connection unit (with code 357 (Map navigation)).
- POI or route has been sent to the vehicle using Google Maps.

POIs that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted to the vehicle using the "Transmit to car" function on the Google Maps web pages.

In vehicles without special equipment, basic telephony, the head unit receives the points of interest or routes from the mobile phone over the Bluetooth® antenna.

Unrestricted surfing
In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered in the browser or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected. After opening the browser, the website last visited is loaded.
To navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor as though you were using a mouse or, on the current page, jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next (the object is highlighted here).
When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the audio/COMMAND display can be used to enter text.
Surfing with the mobile browser is subject to the following technical restrictions:
- No playback of Flash videos
- No downloads
The Internet browser can play Flash, but cannot display any Flash videos.
Additional function requirements: in-car hotspot
- "WiFi" function is activated.
- The head unit is connected to the Internet.
In-car hotspot
The In-Car Hotspot function allows users in the vehicle to use the Internet wirelessly on mobile terminals; this is implemented via the head unit. The head unit as a Wireless Access Point (WAP) exchanges data with the mobile terminals via the WiFi antenna and routes the signals to the Internet.
To connect the mobile terminal, the user must search for networks (Wireless Local Area Network) on the mobile terminal and select the head unit network.
Several devices can be connected simultaneously.
