Function requirements, general 

• Engine running.

Engine sound 

The engine sound function simulates the sound of an engine and exhaust system, as this cannot be heard completely in its original form within the vehicle interior. Here, the driving condition and the engine load are taken into consideration. The simulated sound is output via the speaker system, even when no audio source is active. When audio output is active, the emitted tones are expanded with the simulated sound.

The driving condition is defined on the basis of the following signals, which are transmitted by the powertrain control unit via the drive CAN:

• Transmission mode selection (transmission 725)
• Engaged gear range (transmission 725)
• Vehicle speed
• Engine torque

The engine load is defined on the basis of the following signals, which are transmitted by the ME-SFI control unit via the drive CAN:

• Engine running status
• Engine speed

Depending on the vehicle equipment, one of the following control units calculates the corresponding sound signals:

• Engine sound control unit (except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System) and except AMG vehicles as of 01.06.2018)
• Midline sound system amplifier control unit (AMG vehicles except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System) as of 01.06.2018)
• Sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system))
• Advanced Sound System amplifier control unit (with CODE 811 (Advanced Sound System))

The engine sound control unit actuates the following speakers directly:

• Left front door midrange speaker
• Right front door midrange speaker
• Left rear door midrange speaker
• Right rear door midrange speaker
• Left front door tweeter
• Right front door tweeter
• Left front footwell woofer (for right-hand drive vehicles)
• Right front footwell woofer (for left-hand drive vehicles)

AMG vehicles except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System) as of 01 06 2018 

The Midline sound system amplifier control unit actuates the following speakers directly:

• Left front door midrange speaker
• Right front door midrange speaker
• Left rear door midrange speaker
• Right rear door midrange speaker
• Center instrument panel speaker
• Left front door tweeter
• Right front door tweeter
• Left rear door tweeter
• Right rear door tweeter
• Left front footwell woofer
• Right front footwell woofer

Vehicles with code 810 (Sound system) 

The sound system amplifier control unit actuates the following speakers directly:

• Left front door midrange speaker
• Right front door midrange speaker
• Left rear door midrange speaker
• Right rear door midrange speaker
