Information on installability of touchpad
The touchpad is installed in two variants.
Variant (with code 448 (Touchpad)): The touchpad is installed together with the Audio/COMAND control panel. The touchpad is connected only to the telematics CAN.
Variant 2 (with code 446 (Touchpad only)): The touchpad is installed instead of the Audio/COMAND control panel. In this case, the upper control panel control unit, the left lower control panel and right lower control panel are connected to the touchpad via LCP-LIN. The touchpad is also connected to the telematics CAN.
Function requirements for video operation in general
- Status of circuit 30g On (model 205 up to model year 2019, Model 253 (except 253.99) up to model year 2020)
- Status of circuit 30t On (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) as of model year 2020, model 253.99)
- Transport mode not active
- A video DVD is inserted into the DVD/CD magazine of the head unit (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) up to model year 2020)
- No smartphone connected via Android Auto or CarPlay to the multimedia connection unit or to the front center console USB port (with code 896 (Vehicle access and drive authorization via mobile phone), code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging) or code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
Video mode
Model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except for 253.99) up to model year 2020
The DVD drive of the COMAND controller unit supports playback of video DVDs. The video image is shown on the Audio/COMAND display.
Model 205 from model year 2019, model 253 (except for 253.99) from model year 2020, model 253.99
The head unit supports the playback of videos on mobile data media and devices (e.g. a USB stick, smartphone) as well as videos (HTML5) from the Internet. The head unit also prepares compressed video data for displaying on the Audio/COMAND display.
Internet usage is described elsewhere.
The mobile data media and devices can be connected via the following components:
- Front center console USB port (with code 896 (Vehicle access and drive authorization via mobile phone), code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging) or code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
- USB port 1 of multimedia connection unit
- USB port 2 of multimedia connection unit
The USB ports are read in directly by the head unit, except the front center console USB port on model 253 (except 253.99) as of model year 2020. On model 253 (except 253.99) as of model year 2020, the head unit receives the signals from the front center console USB port over the multimedia connection unit.
The video function can be operated using the:
- Lower control panel (volume adjustment) or upper control panel control unit (menu) (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) as of model year 2020, model 253.99)
The relevant lower control panel or the upper control panel control unit transmits the operation signals via the LCP LIN, the Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or the touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) and the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Audio/COMAND control panel (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except for 253.99) up to model year 2020, model 205 as of model year 2019 except for code 446 (Touchpad only))
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad) or model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2015 up to 31.05.2019 with code 494 (USA version) or with code 498 (Japan version))
The touchpad sends the operation signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
Model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except for 253.99) up to model year 2020
The steering wheel electronics reads the control signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group directly. The steering column tube module control unit reads them via the steering LIN and transmits them to the instrument cluster via chassis FlexRay, the electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN. The instrument cluster transmits the control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups to the head unit via the user interface CAN.
Model 205 from model year 2019, model 253 (except for 253.99) from model year 2020, model 253.99
The steering wheel electronics reads in the control signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group directly. The steering column tube module control unit reads them in over the steering-wheel CAN and sends them to the head unit over the suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN.
- Audio/COMAND display (model 253 (except 253.99) as of model year 2020)
The Audio/COMAND display detects swipe movements and touch movements on the display and transmits the operation signals to the head unit via the telematics CAN.
The head unit reads the video data in and transmits the processed data for presentation to the audio/COMAND display via the LVDS line (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) up to model year 2020) or the HSVL line (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) as of model year 2020, model 253.99) to the Audio/COMAND display.
Audio is output depending on the equipment variant:
- In vehicles except code 810 (Sound system) and in model 205 as well except code 853 (sound system "Midline"), the head unit outputs the audio signals via the speaker system.
- In vehicles with code 810 (Sound system), the head unit sends the audio signals over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit. The sound system amplifier control unit amplifies these and outputs the audio via the speaker system.
- In model 205 with code 853 (sound system "Midline"), the head unit transmits the audio signals via MOST to the Midline sound system amplifier control unit. The Midline sound system amplifier control unit amplifies these and outputs the audio via the speaker system.
