Function requirements for voice control system, general 

Voice control system (VCS), general 

The VCS allows various telematics functions (e.g. radio, telephone, navigation) to be operated.

From model year 2019, it will also be possible to operate certain vehicle functions such as exterior lights control, climate control, the seat heater (with code 873 (Seat heater for driver and front passenger) or code 401 (Seat climate control for driver and front passenger)) and the massage function (with code 409 (Front left/right multicontour seat)).

The VCS is integrated into the head unit and the voice controlled entries can be made by spelling out words or pronouncing whole words.

The VCS is switched on using the voice control switch and favorites are switched on and off using the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group.

Model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) 

The VCS is switched on/off through the multifunction steering wheel button group. The steering wheel electronics read in the operation signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the operation signal of the right multifunction steering wheel button group directly and sends them over the steering LIN to the steering column tube module control unit. The steering column tube module control unit sends the operation signals of the multifunction steering wheel button group over the suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit.

The VCS is switched on using the voice control switch and favorites are switched on and off using the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. The steering wheel electronics read in the operation signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group directly and sends them to the steering column tube module control unit over the steering wheel CAN. The steering column tube module control unit transmits the control signals from the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group to the head unit via the chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN.

Voice input is conducted using the hands-free system microphone (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99)) or the driver's hands-free system microphone (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99) that is connected over a direct line to the head unit. The head unit processes the signals internally and implements them accordingly.

IMPORTANT In order to work, the voice detection function must learn to recognize the driver's voice. If the driver's voice or the message of the voice command cannot be clearly identified, the VCS issues a query.

The audio signals are generated by the head unit and output via the speaker system. The head unit actuates the speaker system directly or it sends corresponding signals over MOST to the Midline sound system amplifier control unit (with code 853 ("Midline" sound system)) (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99) or to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)).
