Information on touchpad
The touchpad is installed in two variants.
Variant (with code 448 (Touchpad)): The touchpad is installed together with the Audio/COMAND control panel. The touchpad is connected only to the telematics CAN.
Variant 2 (with code 446 (Touchpad only)): The touchpad is installed instead of the Audio/COMAND control panel. In this case, the upper control panel control unit, the left lower control panel and right lower control panel are connected to the touchpad via LCP-LIN. The touchpad is also connected to the telematics CAN.
Function requirements, general

- Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone or telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) authorized in vehicle and on head unit
- Mobile phone supports hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or higher.
- No smartphone connected via standard CarPlay
If a smartphone is integrated into the vehicle with Android Auto, telephone calls can only be made using this smartphone.

Equipment and use variants of mobile phone system:

With code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging):
The mobile phone cradle control unit is only used for near-field communication (NFC) and for the wireless charging in accordance with the Qi standard.
A mobile phone authorized on the head unit can also be used as a modem for accessing the Internet or as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® audio.
The head unit sends and receives telephone signals over the following Bluetooth® antennas:
- Model 205, 253.99: Bluetooth® antenna
- Model 253 (except 253.99): Bluetooth® antenna, Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/161) and Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/162) (with code 549 (Connect 20 HIGH (NTG6)))
The head unit also generates the display messages and sends corresponding data over the HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND display. If the head unit is not switched on, it can be activated via the "ON" button in the respective lower control panel. The respective lower control panel sends the status of the "ON" button over the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) and the telematics CAN to the head unit.
Some telephone functions can also be used through the instrument cluster. The head unit exchanges the necessary signals over the user interface CAN with the instrument cluster.
The mobile phone system is described using the example of basic telephony. The special features of the special equipment are summarized at the end of this document.
The mobile phone system includes the following areas:

Bluetooth®
Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to quickly and easily connect mobile terminals that support the corresponding profiles to the mobile phone system. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e. g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The relatively high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of a Bluetooth® network also make the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting. The head unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy over the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface and the head unit's Bluetooth® antennas. The head unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.
If the mobile phone is not connected with the head unit automatically or if the head unit is to establish a connection with a different mobile phone, the connection must be established manually via the basic telephone function. Authorized mobile phones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized mobile phones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. If a new mobile phone is to be authorized when there are already 15 authorized mobile phones, the user is prompted to delete one of the existing data records. Detailed information on authorization can be found in the respective operator's manual.
Switch on/off characteristics
The mobile phone is switched ON/OFF via the mobile phone itself. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) must then, where set, be entered in the mobile phone. If the subscriber identification module (SIM) has been authorized, the mobile phone registers with the mobile phone network of the respective provider. The mobile phone network provider and signal level are displayed in the status bar of the Audio/COMAND display. The Bluetooth® setting must be enabled in the mobile phone.
If the mobile phone was manually or automatically switched OFF or if the Bluetooth® setting is switched OFF, the message "Ready for Bluetooth® Telephony" is displayed in the Audio/COMAND display. The head unit then searches again for the last authorized mobile phones.
The head unit can be switched on or off using the "ON" button on the respective lower control panel.
Call signal
The head unit receives the mobile phone call signal over the head unit's Bluetooth® antennas. The head unit then switches the active audio source to "Mute" and shows the caller ID in the Audio/COMAND display. To do this, the head unit transmits the corresponding data to the Audio/COMAND display via the HSVL line. The ringing tone is output via the speaker system. The head unit activates the speaker system directly or sends the corresponding signals to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)) or the Midline sound system amplifier control unit (model 205 with code 853 ("Midline" sound system)) over MOST. If the mobile phone supports in-band ringing, the ring tone of the mobile phone is output, a standard ring tone is otherwise output.
Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call
Telephone numbers can be entered using a character bar on the Audio/COMAND display or they can be searched for and selected in call lists or in the address book.
The mobile phone system can be operated using the following components:
- Mobile phone
All activities on the mobile phone are sent over the head unit's Bluetooth® antennas to the head unit.
- Upper control panel control unit
The upper control panel control unit transmits the control signals to the head unit via the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) and telematics CAN.
- Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only))
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad))
The touchpad sends the operation signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
The accept and end phone call switch in the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group can be used to make and terminate a call. The operation signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering wheel electronics. The steering wheel electronics transmits these over the steering wheel CAN, steering column tube module control unit, suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit.
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with code 531 (COMAND APS))
The VCS is activated via the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. When a call is being established or a call is being accepted, the VCS is automatically switched off. The operation signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering wheel electronics. The steering wheel electronics transmits these over the steering wheel CAN, steering column tube module control unit, suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit. The voice commands are recorded by the driver hands-free system microphone and on model 253 (except 253.99) by the front passenger hands-free system microphone too, and forwarded over a direct line to the head unit. If necessary, the head unit sends the control signals over the head unit's Bluetooth® antennas to the mobile phone.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
- Audio/COMAND display (model 253 (except 253.99))
The Audio/COMAND display detects swipe movements and touch movements on the display and transmits the operation signals to the head unit via the telematics CAN.
Call waiting: Call waiting is a performance feature in which the subscriber can switch between two active connections.
Conference connection: Conference connection is a performance feature in which - depending on the type of connection - several subscribers can be interconnected.
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input in the hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the head unit. The head unit and the mobile phone communicate with each other over the head unit's Bluetooth® antennas. Incoming voice signals are output via the speaker system. The head unit activates the speaker system directly or sends the corresponding signals to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)) or the Midline sound system amplifier control unit (model 205 with code 853 ("Midline" sound system)) over MOST.
The volume of the voice outputs can be adjusted, e.g. using the volume adjustment button (manual transmission) on the left lower control panel, with the volume control button (automatic transmission) on the right lower control panel or the volume adjustment switch on the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group.
The left lower control panel sends the status of the volume adjustment button (manual transmission) or the right lower control panel sends the status of the volume control button (automatic transmission) over the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) and the telematics CAN to the head unit.
The steering wheel electronics reads in the control signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group directly. The steering wheel electronics send the control signals over the steering wheel CAN to the steering column tube module control unit and from there over the suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit.
Address book
The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the head unit. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book.
Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. Address data of external devices (e.g. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Notebook) or storage media (e.g. Secure Digital (SD) card, Universal Serial Bus (USB) memory) can be saved in the address book and are then permanently available as an address entry.
Address data can be transferred to the address book via the following system components:
- Bluetooth® interface on the mobile phone and head unit Bluetooth® antennas
- SD map view on the multimedia connection unit (model 205, model 253.99)
- USB connector 1 or USB connector 2 in the multimedia connection unit
- Front center console USB port (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony), code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging) or code 896 (Vehicle access and drive authorization through mobile phone))
On model 253 (except 253.99) the front center console USB port is connected over the multimedia connection unit to the head unit.
Address book entries can include the following information:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic notation entry of name in the "Katakana" syllabary) (with code 498 (Japan version))
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- Geo position
With code 498 (Japan version):
The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
SMS (except code 498 (Japan version))
The SMS application enables the user to receive, send and manage SMS messages. For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the head unit. The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receive
- Read on display of mobile phone and on audio/COMAND display
- Read out (English or German)
- Write and send
- Delete
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (each SMS message is preceded either by the sender or the start of the text, as desired)
The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported. Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages or emails in the mobile phone.
As soon as the head unit is connected to the mobile phone, it receives the SMS messages already saved in the mobile phone and any new incoming SMS messages and emails over the head unit's Bluetooth® antennas. The functions for writing, sending and managing SMS messages or emails are called up through the basic telephone function.
The head unit shows them on the Audio/COMAND display over the HSVL line. When reading out the SMS messages and emails, the head unit activates the speaker system directly or sends the corresponding signals to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)) or the Midline sound system amplifier control unit (model 205 with code 853 ("Midline" sound system)) over MOST.
Two phone mode
It is possible to connect two mobile phones at the same time using two phone mode. During two phone mode, the full functional scope is operable via the head unit on the mobile phone selected as the "first telephone". With the "second telephone", incoming calls can be accepted and incoming SMS read. The user can switch between the "first telephone" and the "second telephone" at any time using the head unit.
Telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)
For communication via the antenna connection (and for charging), the mobile phone is placed into the mobile phone cradle control unit in the center console. The mobile phone cradle control unit forwards the switch-on signal from the head unit inductively to the mobile phone.
If the mobile phone does not support the Qi standard for wireless charging, it can be connected to the front center console USB port for the charging process using a charging cable included in the package contents.
The mobile phone cradle control unit fulfills the following functions:
- Mobile phone connection to left telephone antenna or right telephone antenna
- Inductive power supply for the mobile phone, if the mobile phone supports the Qi standard
- Forwarding of wake-up signal from the head unit
- Fast login option for mobile phone via the integrated NFC interface or near field communication antenna (model 205)

Mobile phone
To ensure smooth communication of the mobile phone with the mobile phone cradle control unit, the cellular telephone system signals are sent through capacitive coupling.
The mobile phone communicates directly over Bluetooth® with the head unit over the head unit's Bluetooth® antennas.
PIN query (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the mobile phone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown by the head unit over HSVL line on the Audio/COMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls.
NFC (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony), code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging) or code 896 (Vehicle access and drive authorization through mobile phone))
NFC is an international transmission standard for wireless exchange of data per wireless technology over very short distances of a few centimeters. Mobile phones that are placed onto the mobile phone cradle control unit and that support the NFC standard can be connected easily and quickly using Near Field Communication to the mobile phone system. The NFC interface of the mobile phone cradle control unit and the near field communication antenna (model 205) are used for near field communication. The near-field communication antenna (model 205) forwards the received signals to the mobile phone cradle control unit. The mobile phone cradle control unit sends the initialization data via the telematics CAN to the head unit.
Additional function requirements for the charging process (with code 899 (multifunction telephony), with code 897 (cable-free mobile phone charging))
- The mobile phone supports the Qi standard for the wireless charging process.
- The mobile phone is placed into the mobile phone cradle control unit in the center console.
Charging process (with code 899 (multifunction telephony), with code 897 (cable-free mobile phone charging))
In accordance with the Qi standard the mobile phone is charged during the wireless charging process inductively through the contact surface of the mobile phone cradle. To regulate the mobile phone's power supply, the head unit receives information on the mobile phone battery (e.g. state of charge) over the telematics CAN from the mobile phone cradle control unit.
For a faster charging process or head unit if the Qi standard is not supported, the mobile phone can be connected to the front center console USB port, USB port 1 or USB port 2 of the multimedia connection unit using the charging cable included in the scope of delivery.
Connection priority (model 205 with code 899 (multifunction telephony))
The head unit can integrate authorized mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via NFC or through Bluetooth®, provided it is activated for the mobile phone. The NFC interface of the mobile phone and the near-field communication antenna on the mobile phone cradle control unit can be used for NFC. Bluetooth® communication uses the Bluetooth® interface of the mobile phone and the head unit's Bluetooth® antennas.
The head unit differentiates between the following connection priorities:
- The mobile phone is placed on the mobile phone cradle control unit and logged in via NFC.
- The mobile phone is in the Bluetooth® signal range.
The head unit automatically searches over the Bluetooth® connection for the last two connected mobile phones, and then connects to the mobile phone that responds first.
If the mobile phone is not connected with the head unit automatically or if the head unit is to establish a connection with a different mobile phone, the connection must be established manually via the basic telephone function. Authorized mobile phones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized mobile phones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. The head unit automatically reconnects authorized mobile phones. The head unit automatically searches for all authorized mobile phones and connects to the mobile phones in the sequence of the last used.
