REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on it. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
1.1 Release pressure in ABC system using diagnostic system Model 217, 222
with code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))

1.2 Vent pressure in AIRmatic system using diagnostic system Model 217, 222
except code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))

2 Remove center engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105LF
3 Remove the appropriate front wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050HA
4 Detach line bracket from spring control arm (2) and place to one side with lines connected Model 217, 222
with code M005 (4MATIC)
 
5 Unscrew nut (1) from spring control arm (2) on steering knuckle (3) NOTES The ball head must be counterheld and an impact wrench/driver must not be used. Otherwise the ball head or steering knuckle (3) may be damaged.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, spring control arm to steering knuckle

6 Remove suspension strut (4) from spring control arm (2) Model 217, 222
with code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))

    Model 217, 222

7 Remove strut rod at front axle. Model 222
with code Z07 (Top protection)
AR33.15-P-0160LF 
8 Detach spring control arm (2) from front axle carrier (5) and remove TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, spring control arm to front axle carrier *BA33.20-P-1002-01T 
INSPECT Check     
9.1 Check elastomer bearing in spring control arm (2) for condition, damage and variant Model 217 (except 217.377/378/379/387/388/477/478/479/487/488)
Model 222 (except 222.077/177/178/179/187/188)
IMPORTANT The elastomer bearing variants are shown in the reference document.
 
    If there are problems, if a neutral (genuine) elastomer bearing is installed. ↓
Replace spring control arm (2)
If there are problems, when a elastomer bearing is installed for camber correction. ↓
Replace elastomer bearing of spring control arm (2)

If there are problems ↓
Replace spring control arm (2)
 
10 Check suspension strut joint on spring control arm (2) for condition and damage Model 217, 222
except code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))
If there are problems ↓
Replace suspension strut joint on spring control arm (2)

11 Check seal bellows and ball head of spring control arm (2) for condition and damage If there are problems ↓
Replace spring control arm (2)
 
12 Install in the reverse order    
13 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200LF
