Check toe-out angle. |
To check the steering geometry, measure the toe-out angle. This is the difference in the steer angle between the outside wheel and the inside wheel when the inside wheel is steered through 20°. If substantial deviations are found, the cause may be one of the following, assuming that the caster is correct and the camber is set correctly:
- Toe not adjusted in straight-ahead position of steering, resulting in tie rods of unequal length.
- The steering knuckle or tie rod is bent.
Excessively large deviations in the front-end assembly and front axle carrier on vehicles involved in an accident:
- Longitudinal frame member
- Crossmember
- Wheel well
- Firewall, that acts unfavorably on the adjustment ranges for camber and caster so that large difference arise in the toe-out angle between left and right.
