Media interface function - GF82.60-P-2020CA
MODEL 207 with CODE (518) Media interface up to model year 2013/YoM 12
Function requirements for media interface, general
- Circuit 30g ON
- Audio equipment switched on
Media interface, general
With the media interface function, it is possible to connect the following portable terminals to the audio equipment via a media interface adapter cable, the media interface electrical connector (X18/70), the media interface control unit (N125/1) and Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
The AUX jack electrical connector (X39/45) (up to 31.5.2011 in the glove compartment and as of 1.6.2011 in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest) is discontinued.
The media interface electrical connector and the media interface adapter cable are located up to 31.5.2011 in the glove compartment and as of 1.6.2011 in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest.
The following devices can be connected:
- AUX devices (class 1)
- "iPod" or universal serial bus (USB) devices (Media Transfer Protocol) (Class 2)
- Special USB devices (mass storage device) (class 3)
AUX devices without an operating facility are connected to the AUX connection.
"iPods" can be connected to the "iPod" connector.
USB devices are connected to the USB connector.
Media Transfer Protocol (Class 2) devices are connected to the USB connector and the AUX connector.
In vehicles as of 1.7.2011 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
If you try to connect a USB memory stick using an adapter cable to the media interface electrical connection, the following message appears on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) "Note: Please connect the device to the other USB port". The USB electrical connector (X115) for connecting USB memory sticks is also located in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest.
Menu navigation and graphic representation of the menu navigation are shown on the Audio/COMAND display and are dependent on the specific portable terminal connected.
Operation of the listed portable terminals (except AUX devices) is conducted using one of the following controls:
- Buttons on audio equipment
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
As of 1.6.2010: With the audio source "Aux" (via media interface adapter cable), the selections "Standard" and "Boost" are possible in the "Volume" menu. The input level can be increased by selecting "Boost".
Function sequence for media interface
The media interface control unit is supplied with voltage through 2 direct lines (circuit 31 and circuit 30). If an "iPod" or a USB device is connected, it is recognized by the media interface control unit via the following route:
- Media interface adapter cable
- Media interface electrical connector
The media interface control unit then sends a signal to the audio equipment, which then switches to the connected source. The audio signals and data from the connected portable device are transferred to the audio equipment via the following route:
- Media interface adapter cable
- Media interface electrical connector
- Media interface control unit
- MOST
If the audio equipment is switched off, it is not activated when a portable terminal is connected through the media interface system.
In vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer without code (218) Reversing camera and in vehicles with code (498) Japan version without code (610) Night View Assist, video signals and data can also be processed and displayed.
The media interface electrical connection routes the video signals and data over a direct line to the audio equipment. The video signals and data are then processed internally and transmitted to the Audio/COMAND display via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line.
The user can now display the audio data or video data on the Audio/COMAND display by selecting the "Media Interface" menu item as well as the specific submenu item (e.g. "Playlists", "Artists", "Albums", "Genres" or "Audio books").
The "Media interface" menu item and the respective submenu item can be selected using the following controls:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Buttons on audio equipment
The control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded to the audio equipment in the following way:
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The control signals from the buttons on the "Audio equipment" are processed internally.
Following evaluation of the control signals in the audio equipment, they are forwarded by the audio equipment to the connected portable end device via the following route:
- MOST
- Media interface control unit
- Media interface electrical connector
- Media interface adapter cable
The connected portable end device evaluates the control signals and sends the corresponding audio signals and data to the audio equipment via the following route:
- Media interface adapter cable
- Media interface electrical connector
- Media interface control unit
- MOST
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment forwards audio signals over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3). The sound system amplifier control unit emits the audio signals at the speaker system.
On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are emitted by the audio equipment over the following speakers via direct lines:
More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" information.
