Function requirements for Internet connection, general 

Internet connection, general 

The menu for the Internet connection can be called up using the following controls:

The audio equipment receives the signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel via telematics CAN.

The audio equipment receives the signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group via the following route:

When the voice control system (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)) is activated, the COMAND controller unit receives the voice commands via the hands-free system microphone.

IMPORTANT Internet use is demonstrated below by way of an example through operation on the Audio/COMAND control panel.

The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:

Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles with CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system) 

IMPORTANT If the audio equipment is not configured with the current time signal, certificate exchange problems can occur. Dialing in is only possible if a certificate can be successfully exchanged. GPS signals must be received in order to set the clock.

Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles with CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system) 

The function is activated by calling up the menu, e.g. via the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display. The choice is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller.

The signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the Audio/COMAND display via the following route:

The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server to connecting to the Internet. This means that the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing the net and using services, and cannot be located in the network via his activities.

The audio equipment transmits data to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway using an encoded VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection via the following route:

If the multifunction antenna malfunctions or the reception quality is poor, the emergency call system control unit automatically sends and receives the Internet signals over the emergency call system antenna. According to the requests from the audio equipment, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and the service providers via the Internet and sends the received data in the opposite direction to the audio equipment.

IMPORTANT Activating a manual or automatic emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB information call interrupts the Internet connection.

Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles without CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system) 

IMPORTANT If the audio equipment is not configured with the current time signal, certificate exchange problems can occur. Dialing in is only possible if a certificate can be successfully exchanged. GPS signals must be received in order to set the clock (except CODE (505) Radio 20 NTG5 non-navigation-capable)). In vehicles with CODE 505 (Radio 20 NTG5 non-navigation-capable), the time is set manually via the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT Basic telephony is also possible on vehicles with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) or CODE 348 (Emergency call/assist system).

Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles without CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system) 

The function is activated by calling up the menu, e.g. via the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display. The mobile telephone network provider must first be selected. The "System" panel is brought into the foreground on the Audio/COMAND display by rotating the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel. The choice is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller. The signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the Audio/COMAND display via the following route:

The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Additional access data is required for dial-up (e.g. about the tariff), which is available from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.

IMPORTANT Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the "Scissors (disconnect connection)" soft key in the function bar make it easier to manage costs with either a time or data volume contract.

The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server to connecting to the Internet. This means that the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing the net and using services, and cannot be located in the network via his activities.

With CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP), the audio equipment sends data to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway over an encoded VPN connection via the following route:

In vehicles with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony), the audio equipment sends data over an encoded VPN connection to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway via the following route:

IMPORTANT The components of the mobile phone system support the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile phone standard. Vehicles with CODE 228 (Stationary heater) are LTE-capable to a certain extent.

With basic telephony, the audio equipment sends data over an encoded VPN connection to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway via the following route:

According to the requests from the audio equipment, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and the service providers via the Internet and sends the received data in the opposite direction to the audio equipment.

IMPORTANT Multiple use of mobile phone: Basically, several functions can be processed at the same time via mobile phones that are suitable for the Internet connection function, i.e. it is possible to make phone calls while connected to the Internet. However, this depends on the quality of the respective network. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.

Internet usage 

The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:

The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary.

IMPORTANT If, for a specific period of time, no control signals are activated for the Internet function, the audio equipment automatically disconnects the Internet connection. In vehicles except CODE 348 (Emergency call/assist system)), the time period for automatic disconnection in the event of inactivity can be defined on the "System" panel. If necessary the Internet connection is automatically set up again.

Audio signals from the Internet can also be played back. The audio equipment emits the audio signals from the Internet via the speaker system or sends them via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit in vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system).

IMPORTANT More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" information.

Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services 

By turning the Audio/COMAND controller, the panel for the services is shown in the foreground on the Audio/COMAND display. The selection is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel. The individual services and the options for the services can now be actuated in the same way using the Audio/COMAND control panel. The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the audio equipment as have the design of the displays on the Audio/COMAND display so that operation is essentially intuitive.

IMPORTANT The "Back" button to the left of the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel takes you back to the home screen. The signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the Audio/COMAND display via the following route:

The following services, among others, can be used:

IMPORTANT Other services are possible, but they are not described in detail here.

Search for points of interest 

Search term can be selected from list or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for as a search term at the current location, navigation destination, arbitrary location (free entry) or along the route.

IMPORTANT The area that is being searched is defined under "Options". The search results appear in the form of a list. If the list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up. Search results can be stored in the Address book or under "Personal POIs" on the SD (Secure Digital) card in the SD card slot of the audio equipment (except CODE 505 (Radio 20 NTG5 non-navigation-capable)). A selected search result can be transferred to the navigation system, and in this case the audio equipment switches to the navigation menu.

Weather 

Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map. In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed. However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the audio/COMAND display.

The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed. The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.

IMPORTANT Weather data are sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.

Additional function requirements for loading points of interest or routes (with CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)) 

IMPORTANT POIs or routes that have been sent to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. via Google Maps) are also transmitted to the vehicle via the service center.

Load POIs or routes (with CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)) 

The service center transmits POIs or routes to the emergency call system control unit via the mobile telephone network and the multifunction antenna. If terminal 15 is OFF, the emergency call system control unit stores the data in an integrated buffer.

IMPORTANT A maximum of 100 POIs and 30 routes each with up to 255 route points can be stored. If the capacity of the buffer is exceeded, the oldest POIs or routes are overwritten.

If circuit 15 is ON, the emergency call system control unit transmits the points of interests or routes to the audio equipment as soon as it is switched on via the following path:

The reception of information is displayed by the audio equipment by means of a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display.

Using the "Import" menu item, the special destinations or routes are copied from the buffer to the navigation system or the address book of the audio equipment. Only then are the POIs and routes transmitted to the vehicle permanently available in the vehicle.

IMPORTANT Data for navigation can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB Info call.

Additional function requirements for loading POIs or routes (without CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)) 

IMPORTANT POIs that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted to the vehicle using the "Transmit" soft key on the Google Maps web pages.

Load POIs or routes (without CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)) 

The "Load POIs and routes" service lists the POIs and routes that have been sent to the vehicle and makes it possible to transfer them from the clipboard to the navigation system and the address book of the COMAND controller unit using the "Import" menu item. POIs and routes that have been transferred via Google Maps are then only continuously available in the vehicle, if they have been transferred to the navigation system and the address book of the COMAND controller unit using the "Import" menu item of the "Load POIs and routes" service.

IMPORTANT Points of interests can be loaded but no routes. The POIs must always be taken from the COMAND controller unit address book and selected from there as the navigation destination.

IMPORTANT The capacity of the buffer is restricted to 20 routes and 50 points of interest. If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.

IMPORTANT Because of the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs and routes are only available for loading for a limited time period (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs and routes can be made available for loading within the same time period.

IMPORTANT If the POI or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly via the "Navigate" menu entry without the POI or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.

Additional function requirements for free surfing 

Unrestricted surfing 

In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected.

Navigating 

In order to navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor using the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel as though you were using a mouse, or jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next by turning the Audio/COMAND controller on the current page (this highlights the object). Pressing the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel vertically downwards activates the menu. When activating a link it is possible to choose between opening the link and opening the main menu after pressing the Audio/COMAND controller for the first time. When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the Audio/COMAND display can be used to enter text.

IMPORTANT Pressing the left "Back" button of the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel goes back one page during free surfing (as on a computer).

Limits of the mobile browser 

Surfing with the mobile browser is subject to the following technical restrictions:

IMPORTANT The Internet browser can play Flash, but cannot display any Flash videos.

IMPORTANT Web pages may appear differently than they do on a PC. This is because some web site providers provide their pages to a mobile browser in a different format that is specially designed for mobile devices, upon which Mercedes-Benz does not have any influence.
