Function requirements, general
- Circuit 30 ON
Exterior lights (ABL), general
The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.
The exterior lights comprise the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence, on-board network increase
- Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights
Further subfunctions are described in separate information:
- Standing/parking lights actuation, function
- Headlamp control, function
- Additional functions for driving lights actuation, function (with code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination or code (616) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated asymmetrical curve illumination or code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic) or code (608) Adaptive Highbeam Assist)
- Front fog light actuation, function
- Turn signal light actuation, function
- Brake lights actuation, function
- Backup light actuation, function
- Headlight switch off delay, function
- Emergency light actuation, function
Function sequence, on-board network increase
When the on-board electrical system voltage is decreased by the on-board electrical system management below the minimum voltage of a light function during normal driving operation, the front SAM control unit can suppress shutoff of the corresponding light function with the aid of the on-board electrical system increase. To do so, the front SAM control unit requests the minimum voltage required for the corresponding light function. The light functions for which the on-board electrical system increase is activated can be defined at the end of the production line.
The following functions can be coded:
- Low beams actuation during darkness (without code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination and without code (616) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated asymmetrical curve illumination and without code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) and without code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic))
- Backup light actuation
- Front fog lamp actuation (with code (498) Japan version or without code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination and without code (616) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated asymmetrical curve illumination and without code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) and without code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic))
- Rear fog lights actuation
Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights
Switching off the exterior lights prevents the on-board electrical system battery (G1) from being discharged by the active low beam and standing light actuation.
The low beams may be switched on due to the auto on/off headlamps, the daytime running lights or manually via the exterior lights switch. A prerequisite for this is that the status of circuit 15 is On.
If circuit 15 is Off, the low beams are switched off.
The standing lights may be on due to the low beams having been manually switched on, due to the auto on/off headlamps or the daytime running lights, or they can be switched on manually via the exterior lights switch. If the standing lights have been activated because of the manually activated low beams, auto on/off headlamps or the daytime running lights, and if the driver door is opened at circuit 15C ON, the standing lights are switched off.
If the standing lights were manually switched on, and the exterior lights switch set to the standing lights position, then on vehicles up to 31.5.11, they are not switched off.
In vehicles as of 1.6.11 the standing lights are switched off when the on-board electrical system management determines that the engine's starting capability is impaired through the discharged on-board electrical system battery.
If the Ambient illumination function is activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The standing lights remain switched on for a fixed time interval of t = 60 s.
The Ambient illumination function is described in the separate information "Headlamp switch-off delay (SWA), function".
