Function requirements, general 

Automatic interior lights control in general 

The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination (IBL), the warning and exit illumination and the load compartment illumination. The appropriate requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the front SAM control unit.

The automatic interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:

Locator lighting function sequence 

In order to control the locator lighting, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates in the following signals:

IMPORTANT If the ambient illumination function is activated through the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on through the central locking when the vehicle is unlocked. This results in the status circuit 58 activated and thus in the switch and controls and symbol illumination being switched on. The symbol and ambiance illumination function is described in a separate information.

The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit therefore indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:

The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster. The respective selection is sent by the instrument cluster via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps.

Function sequence for orientation lighting 

For control of the orientation lighting, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:

The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.

After circuit 15C is switched off, the front SAM control unit thereby indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:

The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps.

When exiting the vehicle, all lamps are switched off after t = 15 s. The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster. The respective selection is sent by the instrument cluster via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

Function sequence of exit and warning illumination 

The exit and warning illumination is activated by opening a vehicle door.

In order to control the exit and warning illumination, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:

The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the exit and warning illumination as well as the interior illumination via interior CAN to the following control units:

The following components of the exit and warning illumination are actuated directly according to the door status:

The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.

Depending on the status of the interior lamp automatic function switch, the front SAM control unit thereby indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:

The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps. If all the vehicle doors are closed again and the circuit status of circuit 15 On has been sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN, then the interior lights are switched off.

The footwell lamps are then actuated again at the defined brightness value.

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), with circuit 15 Off all the activated lamps are switched off after t = 5 min. when a vehicle door is open and t = 8 s after the closing of the last vehicle door.

For control of the trunk and ambient illumination, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:

The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the trunk and ambient illumination via interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit, which then actuates the following components:

IMPORTANT To protect the on-board electrical system battery, the trunk lid ambient lamp and the right trunk lamp are switched off after t = 10 min if the trunk lid is open.

To ensure that the trunk and ambient illumination can be reactivated after driving with the trunk lid open, the front door control units send the status of the front door rotary tumbler switch and the electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit.

After closing the trunk lid, the trunk lid ambient lamp and the right trunk lamp are switched off.

The interior illumination is activated immediately after an anti-theft alarm system alarm is triggered. The rear SAM control unit transmits the "ATA [EDW] alarm triggered" signal via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit therefore indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:

The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps.

The interior illumination is actuated in order to provide better orientation for the occupants and the first air personnel following an accident.

If the supplemental restraint system control unit detects an accident event, it sends the crash signal via chassis CAN (up to 31.5.13) or chassis CAN 1 (as of 1.6.13) to the front SAM control unit. The instrument cluster sends the vehicle speed to the front SAM control unit over the interior CAN.

The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps. The interior illumination function following an accident with airbag deployment is deactivated under the following conditions:
