Automatic interior lights control in general
The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination (IBL), the warning and exit illumination and the load compartment illumination. The appropriate requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the front SAM control unit.
The automatic interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:
- Locator lighting function sequence
- Function sequence for orientation lighting
- Function sequence of exit and warning illumination
- Function sequence for trunk and ambient illumination
- Function sequence for interior illumination with anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) alarm (with code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
- Function sequence for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
Additional function requirements for locator lighting
- Automatic interior lights switched on via interior lamp automatic function switch
- Locking the vehicle via the central locking (CL [ZV])
Locator lighting function sequence
In order to control the locator lighting, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates in the following signals:
- Interior lamp automatic function switch status
- Status of central locking and circuit 15, sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit via interior CAN
If the ambient illumination function is activated through the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on through the central locking when the vehicle is unlocked. This results in the status circuit 58 activated and thus in the switch and controls and symbol illumination being switched on. The symbol and ambiance illumination function is described in a separate information.
The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit therefore indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp in rear dome lamp (on model 207.3)
The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster. The respective selection is sent by the instrument cluster via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps.
Additional function requirements for orientation lighting
- Automatic interior lights switched on via interior lamp automatic function switch
- Circuit 15C OFF
Function sequence for orientation lighting
For control of the orientation lighting, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:
- Interior lamp automatic function switch status
- Status of circuit 15, sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN
The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.
After circuit 15C is switched off, the front SAM control unit thereby indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp (on model 207.3)
The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps.
When exiting the vehicle, all lamps are switched off after t = 15 s. The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster. The respective selection is sent by the instrument cluster via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.
Function sequence of exit and warning illumination
The exit and warning illumination is activated by opening a vehicle door.
In order to control the exit and warning illumination, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:
- Status of left front door rotary tumbler switch in left front door lock, sent by the left front door control unit via interior CAN
- Status of right front door rotary tumbler switch in right front door lock, sent by the right front door control unit via interior CAN
The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the exit and warning illumination as well as the interior illumination via interior CAN to the following control units:
- Left front door control unit
- Right front door control unit
The following components of the exit and warning illumination are actuated directly according to the door status:
- Left front door exit and warning lamp and left front door warning lamp by the left front door control unit
- Right front door exit and warning lamp and right front door warning lamp by the right front door control unit
The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.
Depending on the status of the interior lamp automatic function switch, the front SAM control unit thereby indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:
- Left front interior lights
- Right front interior lights
- Rear interior lamp (on model 207.3)
The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps. If all the vehicle doors are closed again and the circuit status of circuit 15 On has been sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN, then the interior lights are switched off.
The footwell lamps are then actuated again at the defined brightness value.
To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), with circuit 15 Off all the activated lamps are switched off after t = 5 min. when a vehicle door is open and t = 8 s after the closing of the last vehicle door.
Additional function requirements for trunk and ambient illumination
- Trunk lid open
- Vehicle stationary
- Rain/light sensor reports "Darkness detected" (only control of the trunk lid ambient illumination)
Function sequence for trunk and ambient illumination
For control of the trunk and ambient illumination, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:
- Status of the rain/light sensor read in over the wiper/inside rearview LIN
- Status of trunk lid rotary tumbler switch in trunk lid central locking motor, sent by rear SAM control unit via interior CAN
- Vehicle speed, sent by instrument cluster via interior CAN
The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the trunk and ambient illumination via interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit, which then actuates the following components:
- Right luggage compartment lamp
- Trunk lid ambient lamp
To protect the on-board electrical system battery, the trunk lid ambient lamp and the right trunk lamp are switched off after t = 10 min if the trunk lid is open.
To ensure that the trunk and ambient illumination can be reactivated after driving with the trunk lid open, the front door control units send the status of the front door rotary tumbler switch and the electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit.
After closing the trunk lid, the trunk lid ambient lamp and the right trunk lamp are switched off.
Additional function requirements for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
- ATA [EDW] alarm activated
- Automatic interior lights switched on via interior lamp automatic function switch
Function sequence for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
The interior illumination is activated immediately after an anti-theft alarm system alarm is triggered. The rear SAM control unit transmits the "ATA [EDW] alarm triggered" signal via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.
The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit therefore indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp (on model 207.3)
The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps.
Additional function requirements for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
- Airbag deployment by the supplemental restraint system control unit
- Crash detection by the crash sensor in the front SAM control unit
- Vehicle standstill v = 0 km/h
Function sequence for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
The interior illumination is actuated in order to provide better orientation for the occupants and the first air personnel following an accident.
If the supplemental restraint system control unit detects an accident event, it sends the crash signal via chassis CAN (up to 31.5.13) or chassis CAN 1 (as of 1.6.13) to the front SAM control unit. The instrument cluster sends the vehicle speed to the front SAM control unit over the interior CAN.
The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit therefore indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp (on model 207.3)
The front SAM control unit also actuates the footwell lamps. The interior illumination function following an accident with airbag deployment is deactivated under the following conditions:
- Manual activation of the hazard warning system. The status of the hazard warning flasher switch (up to 31.5.13) or the hazard warning system button (as of 1.6.13) is read in by the front SAM control unit via instrument panel LIN.
- Unlocking the CL [ZV]
- Status of circuit 15R changes to circuit 15 On
- Opening a vehicle door
