TV mode, general 

The tuner unit makes it possible to receive digital TV channels in the vehicle and show them on the Audio/COMAND display. The tuner unit separates the video and audio signals from each other and forwards them separately. The TV mode is therefore comprised as follows:

The TV picture is switched off when the vehicle starts to move. When the vehicle is moving, only acoustic playback remains active and - for safety reasons - a warning is shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

Operation function sequence 

The COMAND controller unit generates the menu displays and transmits them to the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line. The tuner unit receives the control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel via the following route:

• Telematics CAN
• COMAND control unit
• MOST

The tuner unit receives the control signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group and from the right multifunction steering wheel button group via the following route:

• Steering wheel electronics
• Steering LIN
• Steering column module control unit
• Chassis CAN 1
• Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
• Chassis CAN 2
• Instrument cluster
• Interior CAN
• COMAND control unit
• MOST

Function sequence for TV signal reception 

TV signals are forwarded from the rear window antenna to the tuner unit via the following antenna amplifiers:

• FM 2, DAB, and TV antenna amplifier, with CODE 537 (Digital radio) via the TV antenna splitter (model 218.9)
• TV 1 antenna amplifier (model 218.3)
• TV 2 antenna amplifier (model 218.3)

TV signals are forwarded from the windshield antenna to the tuner unit via the following antenna amplifiers:

• TV antenna amplifier (model 218.9)
• TV 3 antenna amplifier

Function sequence for video signal 

After the tuner unit has processed the signals, it outputs the video signals as follows:

• LVDS line (low-voltage differential signal)
• COMAND control unit
• LVDS line
• Audio/COMAND display

Function sequence for audio signal 

After the TV signals have been processed in the tuner unit, the audio signals are sent via MOST to the COMAND controller unit, and in vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), the signals are sent via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, where they are then amplified and output over the speaker system.

TV reception 

Digital television in accordance with the Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB-T) standard is received in the range of 470 to 710 MHz. In addition to the video compression standard Mpeg 2, Mpeg 4 is also supported. Receiving encoded programs is also possible via an integrated conditional access module.

Additional functions 

In the frequency ranges of 90 to 108 MHz and 170 to 222 MHz, new services will be offered that can be supported by the tuner unit.

The tuner unit currently has the following functions:

• Station list of channels currently receivable
• Last settings
• National settings
• Info (information on currently selected stations)

Videotext function: Some stations, primarily in central Europe, offer videotext in addition to their television program. For this purpose, the tuner unit is equipped with a separate videotext decoder. Only videotext broadcast with Latin ASCII characters are supported, i.e. Greek or Cyrillic characters are not supported.

TV reception 

The "B-CAS SIM card" inserted in the SIM (subscriber identification module) card reader of the tuner unit allows encoded programs to be received. With digital TV reception, the "one-segment" substandard (TV standard for mobile telephony) is also supported in vehicles as of 1.6.12 in addition to the "full-segment" substandard.

Additional functions 

The tuner unit has the following functions:

• Digital image storage
• Last settings
• "BML" (Broadcast Markup Language) function: The digital TV tuner supports video text for all available Japanese TV stations. This enables information to be shown similar to a small website on weather, news, etc. By selecting a region in the setting list you can obtain region-specific information.
• "EPG" (Electronic Program Guide) function: The Electronic Program Guide shows information such as start of program, end of program and detailed information on the television programs for each TV station.
• Bilingual function: Two languages are supported depending on station availability, e.g. Japanese on the main-sound track and English on the sub-sound track.
