Emergency call system, general 

The Telematic Alarm Identification on Demand (emergency call system) (TELEAID) was primarily developed to provide the passengers in a vehicle with speedy and effective assistance in the event of an accident or another emergency situation.

The TELEAID emergency call system automatically makes an emergency call (E-call) to the Service Center of the external service provider if an accident occurs. Accident-relevant data such as the vehicle position and the type of accident are transmitted.

The Service Center then notifies the rescue service who can initiate the relevant rescue measures with the help of this information.

IMPORTANT The emergency call system with code (359) TELEAID emergency call system is installed in vehicles up to 31.5.2012. The emergency call system control unit is not used for regular telephone calls.

This function is supplemented by further functions:

All listed vehicle-related services run automatically in the emergency call system control unit. The emergency call system control unit has a priority management feature to ensure that it does not have to manage several vehicle-related services at the same time. This determines the point at which a vehicle-related service is to be activated and which vehicle-related service has the higher priority.

The emergency call system function consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for system start of emergency call system 

The system start subfunction for the emergency call system is comprised of the following subfunctions:

Telephone antenna selection function sequence 

Function sequence for emergency call system self-test 

With circuit 15R ON, the two red light-emitting diodes (LED) integrated into the emergency call system button come on for approx. 4 s during the self-test of the emergency call system control unit.

IMPORTANT The status of circuit 15R is sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN, the front SAM control unit and the diagnostic CAN to the emergency call system control unit.

Actuation is accomplished by the emergency call system control unit via a discrete line. This signals the self-test and activates the check of the following emergency call system states:

Communication between the emergency call system control unit, the Supplemental Restraint System control unit and the Electronic Stability Program control unit or the Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit is monitored cyclically (approx. every 500 ms) as follows:

If no fault is present, the two red LEDs integrated into the emergency call system button go out after approx. 5 s thereby indicating operational readiness of the emergency call system. If a fault is present of if there is no authorization, a corresponding fault message is output in the multifunction display (A1p13).

The two red LEDs in the emergency call system button are also permanently actuated.

The instrument cluster receives the signals for the message in the multifunction display from the emergency call system control unit over the following path:

IMPORTANT If an emergency call is triggered or a vehicle-related service is activated, the LED in the emergency call system button, the MB-Info button, or the breakdown assistance button is actuated intermittently.

Function sequence for selection of telephone antenna 

The multifunction antenna is monitored with an electric test circuit. The electric circuit is supplied with electric voltage by the emergency call system control unit. In the event of a voltage drop (e.g. defect due to an accident), the emergency call system control unit recognizes the failure of the multifunction antenna and automatically switches over to the emergency call system antenna.

Function sequence for voice connection between vehicle and Service Center 

When the following buttons are pressed, the emergency call system control unit sets up a voice connection to the Service Center:

Voice input occurs via the hands-free system microphone, which is integrated in the inside rearview mirror (A67). The signals of the hands-free system microphone are routed over a direct line to the COMAND controller unit, and forwarded from there over a direct line to the communication module integrated in the emergency call system control unit. The communication module then sends the hands-free system microphone signals over the following path to the Service Center:

Voice output is emitted by the emergency call system control unit at the center instrument panel speaker. At the same time, the emergency call system control unit sends a mute signal via direct line to the COMAND controller unit (except code (810) Sound system). The COMAND controller unit speaker outputs are then muted.

In vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the mute signal is sent over a direct line to the sound system amplifier control unit. The speaker outputs on the sound system amplifier control unit are muted.

IMPORTANT A voice connection being made to the Service Center will be canceled by the emergency call system control unit after several dial-up attempts have failed. A fault message is shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

Position finding function sequence 

The position finding partial function is comprised of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for basic position finding 

GPS position finding function sequence 

The GPS receiver integrated into the emergency call system control unit receives the GPS signals from the multifunction antenna via the following route:

The emergency call system control unit calculates the current position of the vehicle from the GPS signals. The emergency call system control unit stores the last 20 GPS coordinates and updates them permanently.

Basic position finding function sequence 

For basic position finding, the emergency call control unit requires the following information:

The Electronic Stability Program control unit or the Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit sends the wheel speed signals over the following path to the emergency call system control unit:

The instrument cluster sends the data on the distance traveled to the emergency call system control unit via the following route:

The emergency call system control unit receives the data on the direction of travel (forwards or backwards) from the front SAM control unit via diagnostic CAN. After this the emergency call system control unit uses the distance traveled, the vehicle alignment and the direction of travel to calculate the vehicle position (degree of longitude and degree of latitude) at any given time.

Vehicle tracking function sequence 

The vehicle tracking partial function consists of the two following subfunctions:

"Theft alarm" function sequence 

If the ATA [EDW] is triggered, the emergency call system control unit receives an "ATA [EDW] alarm" message in the following way:

The "ATA [EDW] alarm" message is transmitted by the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit to the Service Center over the following path:

The Service Center receives the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message and advises the vehicle owner by telephone that the ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered. "Tracking" will not yet be accomplished by the Service Center.

Once the registered owner of the vehicle has been notified by the Service Center of the triggered ATA [EDW] alarm of his/her vehicle or if the registered owner of the vehicle has noticed the theft of the vehicle, the registered owner of the vehicle must report the theft to the police. The registered owner of the vehicle then receives a special number from the police, which confirms that the vehicle theft has been reported.

With this number, the registered owner of the vehicle calls the Service Center and gives the number to a service receptionist. The Service Center checks the query and the legitimacy of the registered owner of the vehicle and then initiates the "Tracking" procedure.

"Tracking" function sequence 

After the vehicle has been reported as stolen to the Service Center and legitimization of the registered owner of the vehicle, an initiation command is sent to the vehicle which prompts the emergency call system control unit to transmit the current GPS coordinates to the Service Center.

The initiation command is received by the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control module via the following path:

The emergency call system control unit then activates the GPS position finding. Then the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit sends the position data to the service provider in the same manner as the "EDW [ATA] alarm" message.

The position data is transmitted cyclically and for the following events:

The Service Center forwards the location of the vehicle to the responsible command staff of the police or the security services. If necessary, a telephone connection is established between the Service Center and the vehicle. The telephone connection is also visualized in the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT Vehicle tracking can only be deactivated by the Service Center.

Function sequence for manual or automatic emergency call 

The emergency call function consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for transmission of the emergency call data and communication with the Service Center 

Function sequence for triggering a manual emergency call 

The emergency call system button is pressed for t > 0.5 s.

The emergency call system control unit directly reads in the status of the emergency call system button via a direct line.

Function sequence for triggering an automatic emergency call 

The emergency call system control unit reads in the crash signal from the supplemental restraint system control unit via a direct line. At the same time, the emergency call system control unit receives the crash signal (redundant) and the crash level from the supplemental restraint system control unit via the following route:

Then, a voice connection to the Service Center is established.

Function sequence for transmission of the emergency call data and communication with the Service Center 

After a manual or automatic emergency call has been initiated, the emergency call system control unit establishes a voice connection to the Service Center.

The feedback of the Service Center is provided by means of an acoustic signal. The emergency call system control unit then automatically transmits a short message (Short Message Service (SMS)) with the following data to the Service Center via the integrated communication module:

The communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit transmits and receives the mobile phone signals via the following route:

IMPORTANT If a manual or automatic emergency call is active, this is indicated by one of the two red LEDs integrated into the emergency call system button flashing. This is also indicated in the multifunction display and on the COMAND display.

Additional function requirements for breakdown assistance 

Breakdown assistance function sequence 

By pressing the breakdown assistance button, a telephone connection to the service receptionist of the CAC is established. The customer now has the option of clarifying the details of the technical problem with the service receptionist, who then initiates appropriate effective remedial measures. At the same time, the emergency call system control unit transmits vehicle-specific identifying data to the CAC.

IMPORTANT The LED in the breakdown assistance button flashes as long as the breakdown assistance is active.

The breakdown assistance function consists of the two following subfunctions:

The status of the breakdown assistance button is read in by the emergency call system control unit over a direct line. The emergency call system control unit automatically transmits an SMS with the following data to the CAC via the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit:

Additional function requirements for MB-Info 

MB-Info function sequence 

This vehicle-related service is a voice service that is provided via the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit.

The MB-Info function consists of the two following subfunctions:

MB-Info call function sequence 

The MB-Info button is read in by the emergency call system control unit via a direct line. The emergency call system control unit automatically sends an SMS to the CAC with the following data:

A voice connection to the CAC is also established via the emergency call system control unit.

IMPORTANT An activated MB-Info call is signaled optically by the LED in the MB-Info button flashing.

The emergency call system control unit sends and receives the mobile phone signals over the multifunction antenna.

IMPORTANT During an MB-Info call, other vehicle-related services and active mobile phone connections are interrupted.

Additionally, the following other services are offered, which are shown on the COMAND display:

The additional MB-Info services, e.g. "Freetext", are shown by the emergency call system control unit in the COMAND display via the following route:

Additional function requirements for remote door unlocking 

Vehicle remote door unlock function sequence 

The vehicle remote door unlocking is activated, after the Service Center has been authorized by the vehicle remote door unlocking by pressing the trunk lid/liftgate external operation switch for t > 15 s. The emergency call system control unit reads in the status of the trunk lid/liftgate external operation switch over the following path:

The emergency call system control unit then automatically transmits an SMS with the following data to the Service Center, via the communication module integrated into emergency call system control unit:

The communication module integrated in the emergency call system control unit sends the mobile phone signals over the multifunction antenna.

The Service Center compares the data sent with the request and driver legitimization and, if the data matches, a "vehicle remote door unlock request" is sent to the vehicle. The "vehicle remote door unlock request" and the mobile phone signals are received by the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit over the multifunction antenna.

After receiving the "vehicle remote door unlock request", the emergency call system control unit sends the request to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the following route:

The electronic ignition lock control unit then initiates the unlocking of all vehicle doors and the unlocking of the trunk lid. The execution of the vehicle remote door unlock is displayed by a message in the instrument cluster. In addition, the red light-emitting diode in the emergency call system button flashes.

IMPORTANT If the "Vehicle remote door unlock request" is refused by the Service Center because, for example, the trunk lid/liftgate external operation switch was not actuated at the agreed time or legitimization was incorrect, the vehicle remote door unlock function is disabled for t = 15 min.

Additional function requirements for remote door locking 

Vehicle remote door locking function sequence 

The vehicle remote door locking subfunction enables the registered owner of the vehicle to lock his/her unlocked vehicle. The Service Center checks the request and the legitimization of the registered owner of the vehicle and, if the data matches, it sends a remote door locking request to the vehicle.

The remote door locking request is received by the emergency call system control unit in the following way:

After receiving the remote door locking request, the emergency call system control unit sends the request to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the following route:

The electronic ignition lock control unit then checks whether the locking of all vehicle doors and trunk lid is possible. If yes, the electronic ignition lock control unit initiates locking of all vehicle doors and the trunk lid. If not, feedback is sent to the Service Center via the same route as the remote door locking request.

If the vehicle doors and the trunk lid have been locked, feedback is also sent to the Service Center via the same route as the remote door locking request. After receiving the feedback, the Service Center notifies the registered owner of the vehicle about the remote door locking result (locked: yes or no) over the phone connection that is still active.
