Mobile telephone system, general
The functional scope of the mobile phone system is not only dependent on the vehicle equipment, but also on the mobile phone used and the settings on the mobile phone. A differentiation is made between the following variants for the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Comfort telephony (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony), except CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP))
- Mobile phone contact plate
- Telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP)
All variants use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer. With basic telephony, the mobile phone is connected to the audio equipment via Bluetooth®. The mobile phone can be operated with the control components of the vehicle and the vehicle's hands-free system can be used. If the mobile phone and audio equipment support Internet access, the telephone connection is Internet capable, the connection to the mobile telephone network is also established via the multifunction antenna (exterior antenna) of the vehicle and the mobile phone is charged. The telephone connection during comfort telephony (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony)) is Internet capable, if the mobile phone supports Internet access.
For telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) phone calls are made via the multifunction antenna without the mobile phone being connected to the vehicle via a suitable mobile phone cradle (accessories). If the mobile phone and the audio equipment support Internet access, then the telephone connection via the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is also Internet capable. Since the mobile phone with telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) is in a condition that is comparable to standby or flight mode, the mobile phone's rechargeable battery is only used to a small extent. If necessary, a charging cable for the mobile phone can be connected to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can also be operated without a mobile phone, with only a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card.
Telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) requires equipment with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony). Instead of the mobile phone cradle (accessories), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be plugged into the mobile phone contact plate.
The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example.
The mobile phone system includes the following areas:

A mobile phone authorized on the audio equipment can also be used as a modem for accessing the Internet or as a playback device as part of the Bluetooth® audio setup, cf. the documents "Internet access, function" or "Audio mode, function".
In order to be able to operate a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone that is authorized on the audio equipment in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or higher.

Bluetooth®
Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to connect modern communication devices such as personal digital assistants (PDA) or notebooks to the mobile phone system quickly and easily. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The truly high level of data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) make the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting.
The audio equipment can integrate the latest-generation mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the Bluetooth® interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna. The audio equipment automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone which responds first.
With CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) a search is initially made for the last two connected SIM Access Profile (SAP) telephones, with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony) except CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) a search is first made for a mobile phone in the mobile phone cradle (accessories).
If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the audio equipment or if the audio equipment is to establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually over the "Telephone" base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first.
SAP telephones (with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP)) are kept in a separate list. Up to 15 mobile phones and up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized at the same time. If more telephones are authorized, the oldest data records in each case will be overwritten. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.
Switch on/off characteristics
A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® is switched on and off on the mobile phone itself. A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth® processes the switch-on signal internally in the mobile phone.
If configured on the mobile phone and the phone transmits the status, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) prompt only appears on the mobile phone display. PIN entry is made on the mobile phone only.
The reception status is received by the mobile phone's antenna.
The display of the PIN and the reception status as well as the signals of the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally in the mobile phone. After logging into the mobile telephone network provider's mobile phone network, a display appears on the mobile phone display and the Audio/COMAND display.
The mobile phone's switch-off signal is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone.
Call signal
The audio equipment receives the call signal via the Bluetooth antenna from the mobile phone.
The audio equipment transmits the call tone via direct lines to the speaker system or, in vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and transmits them to the speaker system.
If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ring tone is emitted via the speakers, otherwise the audio equipment's default ringing sound is used.
The audio equipment mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. in radio mode) (MUTE).
The call recognition is displayed by the audio equipment on the audio/COMAND display via a LVDS line.
If "Tel" was selected in the instrument cluster, the call identification is shown in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the signals from the audio equipment via the interior CAN.
Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call
The function can be carried out using the following components:
- Mobile phone
- Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
Comprehensive instructions on the operating options are available in the operator's manual.
If the mobile phone is not operated directly, the audio equipment transmits the control signals via the Bluetooth antenna to the mobile phone. The audio equipment generates the displays corresponding to the control procedures and transmits them via LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display.
Toggle: On vehicles with CODE 531 (COMAND APS) incoming calls during a call are shown on the Audio/COMAND display (call waiting). The toggle function enables a change to be made between the calls shown on the Audio/COMAND display. Voice communication only exists for the respective active telephone connection, while other connections are put on hold. The toggling function is dependent on it being supported by the mobile phone.
If the mobile phone does not support toggling, when another call is accepted the call active up until then is then terminated.
Mobile phone
Operation on the mobile phone is internally processed and not forwarded to the audio equipment.
Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment
The control signals of the telephone keys or the keypad on the audio equipment are processed internally.
The buttons on the audio equipment provide the following control options, for example:
- Activate basic telephone function with "TEL" button
- Enter telephone number directly using audio equipment keypad
- Establish or accept telephone connection using "Accept phone call" button
- Terminate or reject telephone call using "Terminate phone call" button
Audio/COMAND control panel
The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent via telematics CAN to the audio equipment.
The following options are available to the user for dialing a telephone number, for example:
- Enter telephone number using character bar on Audio/COMAND display
- Search for telephone number in phone book
- Search for telephone number in address book (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
- Search for the telephone number using the "Call lists" menu entry in the call lists (accepted, dialed)
By selecting the corresponding operating panels on the Audio/COMAND display, calls can be accepted or rejected and it is possible to switch between various calls (toggle).
Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded to the audio equipment as follows:
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column module control unit
- Chassis CAN 1
- Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
- Chassis CAN 2
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
A call can be established or terminated in the following manner, for example:
- Use the syste m selection button to open the "Telephone" menu
- Use the scroll forward/back button to select the phone book
- Use the scroll forward/back button to select the name of the person to be called
- Use the OK button to establish the call
- Use the accept/terminate phone call button in the right-hand subfield to end the call
Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
When the VCS [SBS] is activated, a call can be established or accepted in a dialog with the voice control system.
Only the call establishment and acceptance is possible via the VCS [SBS].
The hands-free system microphone records the voice input (voice commands) and forwards this via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit. The VCS [SBS] voice output is transmitted by the COMAND controller unit to the speaker system (except CODE 810 (Sound system) and CODE 811 (Advanced sound system)). In vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system) the COMAND controller unit transmits the voice output via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which then outputs the signals via the speaker system.

The COMAND controller unit converts the voice commands into control signals. Possible voice commands are, for example:
- "Dial number"
- "Redial"
- "Read telephone book"
- "Open or spell entries"
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input of the outgoing telephone signals is recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment. The audio equipment transmits the signals via the Bluetooth antenna to the mobile phone. Incoming voice signals are received via the Bluetooth antenna from the mobile phone by the audio equipment, which then outputs them via the speaker system (except CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system)). In vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), the audio equipment transmits the incoming voice signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and transmits them to the speaker system.

Phone book
The phone book contains the phone book entries stored in the audio equipment. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book. The system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately. The phone book is called up in the basic "Telephone" function via the "Name" menu item in the application field.
The phone book for the mobile phone is downloaded in the background or updated in the audio equipment's phone book if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). Phonebook entries can be uploaded as "vCards" over Bluetooth® or over the multimedia connection unit to the audio equipment.
Address book (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)
The address book contains the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book.
Address book entries can also be copied as "vCards" from other external devices (e.g. PDA, notebook, etc.) or data media into the address book. "vCards" can be transferred into the address book as follows, for example:
- Via Bluetooth®
- Via the Secure Digital (SD) card slot on the COMAND controller unit
- Over the multimedia connection unit
Address entries can contain, e.g. the following:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic notation entry of name in the "Katakana" syllabary) (with CODE 498 (Japan version))
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- Geo position
The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field" (with CODE 498 (Japan version)).
Read access is available to the phone book of the mobile phone when the mobile phone supports the PBAP profile.
Speed-dial list
The speed dial list consists of up to ten telephone numbers to which phone book entries can be assigned with digits from 0 to 9. The user can manage the entries using the "Call lists" and "Speed dial list" menu entries.
The speed dial list is active only when the "Telephone" menu is active.
Pressing the number on the keypad of the audio equipment for a longer period of time (approx. 2 s) dials up the telephone number stored and establishes a connection.
"Seamless switch"
"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:
- An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the audio equipment is switched on and "Private mode" is not activated on the mobile phone.
- An existing telephone call can be continued on the mobile phone if "private mode" is selected on the telephone or if the telephone is removed from the mobile phone cradle.
With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.
Short Message Service (SMS) (except CODE 498 (Japan version))
The SMS application enables the user to manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the "audio equipment".
The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported.
The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receive SMS
- Read SMS via the display of the mobile phone and via the Audio/COMAND display
- Delete SMS
- Read SMS (English or German) (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The SMS function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Upload given SMS to audio equipment
- Receive SMS
- Call up the SMS application
- Display SMS message
- Read out SMS (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
Upload given SMS to audio equipment
The mobile phone transmits the SMS messages already stored on the mobile phone via the Bluetooth antenna to the audio equipment.
Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.
Receive SMS
The mobile phone transmits the new incoming SMS messages via the Bluetooth antenna to the audio equipment.
Call up the SMS application
The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the basic "Telephone" function via the "SMS" submenu in the function bar.
The "TEL" button control signals are processed internally by the audio equipment.
The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent via the telematics CAN to the audio equipment.
The Audio-/COMAND display is actuated by the audio equipment via a low voltage differential signaling line.
Display SMS message
The SMS content is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display. The audio equipment actuates the Audio/COMAND display via the low voltage differential signaling line.
Read out SMS (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
SMS voice output is conducted via the vehicle speaker system.

Additional function requirements for Mercedes-Benz Contact (except CODE 350 (Ecall Europe emergency call system))
- Telephone number of the Service Center entered as a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the audio equipment or in the telephone book of the mobile phone
Mercedes-Benz Contact (except CODE 350 (Ecall Europe emergency call system))
The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio equipment" or the telephone book of the mobile phone. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system (via Bluetooth®) and supports the service acceptance process at the Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.
The fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio unit" or in the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected via one of the following components:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Voice control system (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
After an active call has been established to the Service Center, the user starts the data transfer. The data is transferred after the call has been established by actuating a number key on the keypad of the audio equipment.
For data transfer purposes, the audio equipment checks the kilometer reading and the maintenance computer information of the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.
In vehicles with CODE 531 (COMAND APS) and with CODE 357 (Map navigation) the map data from the navigation module integrated into the audio equipment are also sent. The data is transmitted by the audio equipment by means of Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones to the service center in the same way as when the call has been established successfully. After the data has been transferred to the Service Center, the user can talk to an employee at the Service Center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.

Comfort telephony (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony)) and telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP)
The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna. The connection is made through the mobile phone and the stationary heater radio remote control antenna splitter (with CODE B24 (Remote control for stationary heater) up to 31.05.2015) and the mobile phone contact plate in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the armrest. In vehicles with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony) (except CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP)), a matching mobile phone cradle (accessories) is inserted into the mobile phone contact plate and the corresponding mobile phone is then inserted into the mobile phone cradle. In vehicles with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is plugged on to the mobile phone contact plate.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP).
The comfort telephony and telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) holds the following features:
- Mobile phone contact plate functions signal curve
- Switch-on characteristics
- Personal Identification Number (PIN) query
- Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP))

Mobile phone contact plate functions
The mobile phone contact plate fulfills the following functions:
- Mobile phone or telephone module connection with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) to multifunction antenna
- Power supply for mobile phone or telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)
The connection to the audio equipment (via Bluetooth®) is performed by the mobile phone or the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).

The mobile phone contact plate receives the mobile phone signals from the mobile telephone network via the following route:
- Multifunction antenna
- Mobile phone and stationary heater radio remote control antenna splitter (with CODE B24 (Remote control for stationary heater) up to 31.05.2015)
In vehicles except CODE B24 (Remote control for stationary heater), the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile phone system standard is supported.
In vehicles with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony), the mobile phone contact plate routes the mobile phone signals over the mobile phone cradle (accessories) and on to the mobile phone. In vehicles with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP), the Bluetooth® module routes the mobile phone signals to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). The mobile phone or telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) routes the mobile phone signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the audio equipment.
Switch-on characteristics
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by switching on the audio equipment via a wake-up pulse from the audio equipment. The audio equipment sends the signal via a direct line to the mobile phone contact plate. The mobile phone contact plate forwards the signal with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) and with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony) it routes it over the cradle to the mobile phone.
Personal Identification Number (PIN) query
A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the mobile phone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is displayed by the audio equipment on the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line. The PIN can be entered using the audio equipment controls. For the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP)) the PIN for a connected telephone or the SIM card can be stored so that it does not have to be entered again when the phone is switched on.
Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP))
- Before the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in the vehicle it must be authorized. Proceed as follows to do so:
- Press the button with an LED on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) to set it into the pairing mode.
- In the Telephone menu, select the "Connect MB SAP module" entry.
After this the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is connected to the vehicle.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in two different ways to make a call:
- With an inserted SIM card, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is a fully-functional communication module.
- Without a SIM card the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can use the SIM card of another mobile phone in the vehicle. The required SIM card data are sent over Bluetooth® to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).
Mobile phones that are to be used for telephony with the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile), must support the SIM Access Profile and be connected once (authorized) to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized. After switching on the audio equipment, an automatic search is performed for the last two SAP telephones used in the vehicle, and the first one that responds to the prompt is connected, when the following conditions are given:
- The mobile phone is not connected via Bluetooth® to any other device.
- There is no SIM card in the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).
If another mobile phone is to be connected, then the connection has to be interrupted first and then the corresponding mobile phone manually connected by selecting it from a list of SAP telephones.
If necessary the mobile phone can be charged using a USB connection on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). To do this, the cover on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) has to be removed. The USB connector on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can also be used for installing software updates, e.g. with a USB memory (USB stick). The update files and the procedure are made available to the customer on the Internet.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is Internet capable when the mobile phone contract includes a data option.
A ring tone can be selected for the respective SIM card or SAP telephone from a list of ring tones.
SMS (with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP))
State of the art mobile phones come with two memories for SMS messages: one on the telephone and one on the SIM card. As long as the mobile phone is used for telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP), incoming SMS messages in the mobile phone can only be stored on the SIM card. Storing incoming SMS messages on the SIM card can lead to the following problems:
- SMS messages that have been received while the mobile phone was connected to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) are frequently not displayed in the mobile phone's SMS input.
- The memory on the SIM card is limited. Incoming SMS messages cannot be stored and displayed when the memory is full.
