Function requirements, general

Automatic interior lights control in general

The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination (IBL) as well as the warning and exit illumination.

The appropriate requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the front SAM control unit.

A distinction is made between the following variants:

The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.

The overhead control panel control unit is a participant on the interior CAN. The front SAM control unit sends the corresponding requests via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit.

The automatic interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:

Additional function requirements for locator lighting

Locator lighting function sequence

The following signals are read in and evaluated by the front SAM control unit for controlling the locator lighting feature:

Vehicles without code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof

The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit therefore indirectly actuates the following interior illumination components:

Vehicles with code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof

The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit. The overhead control panel control unit then actuates the following components:

When the central locking is unlocked, all lamps are switched off after expiration of t = 40 s or immediately if the vehicle is locked again within t = 3 s after unlocking it.

IMPORTANT If the ambient illumination function is activated through the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on through the central locking when the vehicle is unlocked. This causes the "Standing lights actuation active" signal to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination.

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components in accordance with a defined brightness value:

Additional function requirements for orientation lighting

Function sequence for orientation lighting

For control of the orientation lighting, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:

After switching off circuit 15C, the front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the orientation lighting via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit (on vehicles with code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof) or directly to the overhead control panel electronics (on vehicles without code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof).

IMPORTANT If the ambient illumination function is activated through the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on through the central locking when the vehicle is unlocked. This causes the "Standing lights actuation active" signal to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination.

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components in accordance with a defined brightness value:

If leaving the vehicle intentionally, all the lamps are switched off after t = 15 s. The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster. The respective selection is sent by the instrument cluster via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

Function sequence for warning and exit illumination

The warning and exit illumination is activated by opening a vehicle door.

In order to control the warning and exit illumination, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:

The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the warning, exit and interior illumination via interior CAN to the following control units:

The following components of the warning and exit illumination are actuated directly according to the door status:

Model 218.374/974:

The front SAM control unit also sends the request to switch on the warning and exit illumination via chassis CAN (up to 28.2.13) or chassis CAN 2 (as of 1.3.13) to the transmission mode control unit.

The transmission mode control unit then actuates the following components in accordance with the door status:

IMPORTANT The front illuminated door sill molding voltage converters supply the front illuminated door sill moldings with voltage. The luminescent films of the front illuminated door sill moldings work with an operating voltage of U = 130 V. The power supply of the front illuminated door sill moldings is interrupted after max. t = 5 min. If, as the result of a malfunction at the front illuminated door sill moldings, a front illuminated door sill molding voltage converter detects a load that is either too high or too low, it switches off the high-voltage output immediately for safety reasons.

In accordance with the status of the interior lamp automatic function switch, the following interior illumination components are actuated. Vehicles without code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit therefore indirectly actuates the following interior illumination components:

Vehicles with code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following interior illumination components:

All footwell lamps are also actuated by the front SAM control unit.

If all the vehicle doors are closed again and the circuit status of circuit 15 On has been supplied by the electronic ignition lock control unit on the interior CAN, then the interior lights are switched off.

The footwell lamps are then actuated again at the defined brightness value.

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), with circuit 15 Off all the activated lamps are switched off after t = 5 min. when a vehicle door is open and t = 8 s after the closing of the last vehicle door.

Additional function requirements for trunk illumination (model 218.3) or load compartment illumination (model 218.9)

Function sequence for trunk illumination (model 218.3) or load compartment illumination (model 218.9)

The following signals are read in and evaluated by the front SAM control unit in order to control the load compartment illumination:

The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the trunk illumination or the load compartment illumination via interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit, which then actuates the following components:

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery, the trunk lamps are switched off after t = 10 min if the trunk lid is open.

The status of the front doors is provided to the rear SAM control unit by the front door control units and the current status of circuit 15 is provided by the electronic ignition lock control unit via interior CAN so that once a journey is over and the trunk lid is open or the liftgate is open, the trunk illumination or cargo area illumination can be activated again. The ambient lamps and the trunk lamps are switched off after the trunk lid or the liftgate is closed.

Additional function requirements for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))

Function sequence for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))

The interior illumination is activated immediately after an anti-theft alarm system alarm is triggered.

The rear SAM control unit sends the "ATA [EDW] alarm activated" signal to the front SAM control unit and the overhead control panel control unit via interior CAN.

The overhead control panel control unit receives this signal and then actuates the following interior illumination components:

Furthermore, the front SAM control unit actuates all footwell lamps.

Additional function requirements of the interior illumination after an accident

Function sequence for interior illumination after accident

The interior illumination is actuated in order to provide better orientation for the occupants and the first air personnel following an accident.

If the supplemental restraint system control unit detects an accident, it sends the corresponding information via chassis CAN (up to 28.2.13) or chassis CAN 1 (as of 1.3.13) to the front SAM control unit. The instrument cluster sends the vehicle speed to the front SAM control unit over the interior CAN.

The front SAM control unit receives this, evaluates it and generates the request to switch on the interior illumination.

The overhead control panel control unit then actuates the following interior illumination components:

Furthermore, the front SAM control unit actuates all footwell lamps.

After an accident, the interior illumination function is deactivated under the following conditions:
