  Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

2 Check oil pan (3).

IMPORTANT The oil pan (3) and overflow pipe (31) have been redesigned to optimize the oil supply to the automatic transmission. The previous oil pan (3) without bias and with black overflow pipe (31) is, after removal, to be replaced by an oil pan (3) with bias and with white overflow pipe (31).

CLEAN Clean     
3 Thoroughly clean oil pan (3) and area surrounding it. NOTES
Absolute cleanliness must be ensured when performing all work on the transmission. Otherwise, even the smallest of foreign particles in the hydraulic components of the transmission can lead to malfunctions or a total failure of the transmission.
IMPORTANT For cleaning, use lint-free cleaning cloth. Chamois leathers are the most suitable.

5 Unfasten cable brackets (4) of electrical wiring harness (5) from oil pan (3) using assembly wedge. If an electrical wiring harness (5) is present.
NOTES
Do not kink or crush lines or subject lines to tension.
Otherwise, the lines will be damaged and there will be function impairments.

6 Drain transmission oil and collect for determining the quantity of transmission oil. IMPORTANT Position oil receptacle under oil pan (3).
IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools

    IMPORTANT Remove drain screw and use drift to pry overflow pipe (31) off base (arrow). The remaining transmission oil drains out immediately after prying off.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace seal.
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Drain screw to oil pan *BA27.10-P-1001-03D

7 Remove oil pan (3) from transmission housing (1). INSTALLATION NOTES :
The sprags (3a) are only approved for transmission 722.9. Do not mix up the sprags (3a) with the sprags of other transmissions. Otherwise contact corrosion may occur.
IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools 
Flexible head wrench insert E10 14", comparable to Snap-on Article no.: TSE100 www.snapon.com
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace bolts (3b).
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, oil pan to transmission housing *BA27.10-P-1002-03D 
8 Remove overflow pipe (31) from oil pan (3). IMPORTANT The distance from the upper edge of the overflow pipe (31) to the floor of the oil pan (3) determines the filling capacity of the transmission.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace overflow pipe (31) and press firmly onto base (arrow).
 
9 Remove seal (33). INSTALLATION NOTES :
Do not apply any sealant or sealing compound to the oil pan (3) and the transmission housing (1).
Otherwise leaks may occur.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace seal (33).
 
CLEAN Clean     
10 Remove magnet (32) from oil pan (3) and clean it. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Check the magnet (32) for damage and replace if necessary.  
11 Clean oil pan (3). INSTALLATION NOTES :
Sealing surfaces must be absolutely free of oil and grease.
Otherwise leaks may occur.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Allow the assembly cleaner used to flash-off completely.

12 Check oil filter (34) for proper operation and replace if necessary.    
13 Install in the reverse order    
14 Fill transmission with oil. Transmission 722.9 (except 722.96/97) in model 164, 171, 172, 203, 204, 205, 207, 209, 211, 212, 215, 216, 218, 219, 220, 221, 230, 231, 251

Always follow the work procedure and observe the Specifications for Operating Fluids. Otherwise the transmission may be damaged.

CAUTION Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
15 Perform engine test run and check transmission for proper operation and for leak tightness.
