Function requirements for SD (Secure Digital) card navigation, general 

IMPORTANT The SD card is authorized for the respective head unit and can then no longer be used with another head unit.

Secure Digital (SD) card navigation in general 

With SD card navigation, the head unit is supported by the following vehicle components:

IMPORTANT Destinations can be sent from the Internet via the "Mercedes-Benz Application Gateway" to the vehicle and imported into the navigation system.

Function sequence for SD card navigation 

The control signals from the upper control panel control unit are read in by the head unit as follows:

The head unit receives the card data from the SD card via the multimedia connection unit and a USB connection (Universal Serial Bus). During authorization, the head unit sends data to the SD card via the USB connection and the multimedia connection unit. The SD card stores this data in a configuration file.

The GPS signals are received by the head unit via a direct line from the GPS antenna, on vehicles with CODE 348 (Emergency call/assist system) from the global positioning system antenna splitter.

IMPORTANT Because GPS works in the gigahertz (GHz) range (microwaves) and the signals are weak, the following events may lead to reception interference: Atmospheric interferences (e.g. bad weather, water vapor, fog), multiple reception due to reflections of the signals (e.g. at building walls) or signal shadowing (e.g. in built-up areas, in tunnels, due to higher buildings or trees).

IMPORTANT In the event of a failure of the GPS signals, the head unit reverts back to the basic position finding.

For basic position finding, the head unit evaluates the data from the integrated 2D gyro sensor as well as the reverse gear signal and the wheel speed signals. The head unit receives the reverse gear signal from the electronic ignition lock control unit via the user interface CAN.

The head unit receives the wheel speed signals via the following route:

IMPORTANT Location errors in position finding, rolling backwards with "circuit 15 OFF" (ignition switched off) or transport of the vehicle falsify the basic position finding. In both instances, the deviation is automatically corrected by the navigation processor integrated in the head unit upon reception of GPS data.

The control signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group are transferred to the head unit as follows:

The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are transferred via telematics CAN to the head unit.

The signals from the touchpad (up to 31.05.2015 with code 522 (Audio 20 radio), as of 01.06.2015 with code 448 (Touchpad) or code 494 (USA version)) are transferred via the telematics CAN to the head unit.

The head unit receives the voice inputs from the hands-free system microphone via a direct line.

On vehicles except CODE 810 (Sound system), the voice output is forwarded by the head unit to the speaker system. In vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system), the head unit transmits the voice output via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit. The sound system amplifier control unit amplifies the signals and forwards them to the speaker system.

The control signals of the volume control button in the left lower control panel (with manual transmission) or in the right lower control panel (with automatic transmission) are transmitted to the head unit in via the following route:

Telematics CAN

The head unit switches on the Audio/COMAND display via telematics CAN. The picture signals are transferred by the head unit via an LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display.

The traffic messages from the integrated FM radio tuners are transferred within the head unit.

On vehicles with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio), the head unit receives real-time traffic data (RTTD) via the following route:

On vehicles with code B54 (Live Traffic Information), real-time traffic data is received as follows:

The head unit sends position data in cyclic intervals as follows:

The telematics services communications module sends the position data via the communications module/stationary heater antenna to the service provider.

IMPORTANT Updates on the SD card takes are downloaded externally on an Internet-capable PC; this is described in the operator's manual.
