REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on it. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A

1 Secure vehicle on the vehicle lift and raise until the wheels are clear of the ground   AR00.60-P-1000GZ
2 Empty AIRmatic using STAR DIAGNOSIS MODEL 166
with CODE 489 (Airmatic (air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive damping system ADS))
 
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS AD00.00-P-2000-04A
NOTES Empty and fill the AIRmatic as per the specifications; the complete wheels must not be touching the ground.
The air springs can otherwise be damaged and fail later.
3 Detach steering coupling at the firewall   AR46.10-P-8000GQ
4 Detach ground line from battery   AR54.10-P-0003GZ
NOTES Notes on battery AH54.10-P-0001-01A
5 Attach engine hoist   AR33.10-P-0105EW 
6 Extract oil from expansion reservoir of Active Roll Stabilization MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM)
 
SPECIAL TOOL Hand pump Fig 5
7 Unclip bleed hose (2) on heat shield    
8 Remove underfloor paneling concerned   AR61.30-P-1001GQ
9 Remove both fender liners in front fenders   AR88.10-P-1300GQ
10 Detach front engine mounts on front axle carrier MODEL 166 with ENGINE 157 AR22.10-P-1260MLZ
Remove/install front engine mount and/or engine support MODEL 166 with ENGINE 276.8 AR22.10-P-1260GQC
MODEL 166 with ENGINE 276.9 AR22.10-P-1260GQ
MODEL 166 with ENGINE 278 AR22.10-P-1260MLJ
MODEL 166 with ENGINE 642 AR22.10-P-1260OGR
MODEL 166 with ENGINE 651 AR22.10-P-1260GQA
11 Detach cable duct (3) from front axle carrier    
12 Unlock and disconnect electrical connections (4) on electrical power steering control unit (N68)    
13 Remove active roll stabilization valve support MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM)

14 Expose electrical feed lines of the active roll stabilization valve support and attach to cable duct (3) MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM)
 
15 Disconnect left switchable engine mount electrical connection (Y123x1) and right switchable engine mount electrical connection (Y123/1x1) and detach feed lines from front axle carrier and rack-and-pinion steering MODEL 166 with switchable engine mount  
16 Detach brackets (5a, 5b) for oil lines from front axle carrier MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM)
 
17 Detach left and right coolant line (6) from front axle carrier    
18 Remove hoses (18) from cooling air ducts (19) MODEL 166 with cooling air ducts for engine mount  
19 Detach clamp (7s) MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM)
 
20 Disconnect line connections (7a, 7b, 7c) MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM)

21 Remove left front axle RPM sensor (L6/1) and right front axle RPM sensor (L6/2) from steering knuckle (8), unclip feed line from bracket and fasten to suspension strut (9) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking bolt, front axle RPM sensor to steering knuckle *BA42.30-P-1001-01G 
22 Detach feed line of the right front brake lining wear sensor from brake caliper and steering knuckle (8) and fasten to suspension strut (9) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, brake pad contact sensor to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1004-10L 
23 Remove brake pads MODEL 166 (except 166.074/874) with ENGINE 276, 278, 642, 651 AR42.10-P-1600GQ
MODEL 166.074/874 with ENGINE 157
IMPORTANT Fasten brake caliper on upper transverse control arm.

25 Detach left and right link rod (10) from torsion bar (11) IMPORTANT Detach link rod (10) carefully, torsion bar (11) is under tension.

26 Detach left and right steering knuckle (8) from upper transverse control arms (12) IMPORTANTRemoval:  Secure steering knuckle (8) against folding down.  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, upper ball joint out of upper transverse control arm to steering knuckle *BA33.20-P-1001-01R 
27 Detach left and right suspension strut (9) from lower control arms (13) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, shock absorber to wishbone *BA32.25-P-1002-01O 
28 Mark position of propeller shaft (14) relative to flange (15) of front axle transmission Only with 4MATIC
IMPORTANT To be able to reproduce the original position when installing.
 
29 Detach propeller shaft (14) from flange (15) and fasten to vehicle Only with 4MATIC  
Tightening procedure for front propeller shaft
INSTALLATION NOTES Observe tightening procedure.
Otherwise vibrations and noise can occur.

32 Remove bolts (16a, 16b) INSTALLATION NOTES Before positioning the bolts (16b), use lifting platform to move the front axle to its final installation position. Do not "pull" front axle into position by tightening the bolts (16b).
The threaded connections can otherwise fail.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Before tightening the bolts (16a, 16b), use a drift set to center centering panels (17).
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1001-01I 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stiffening plate to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1002-01I 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stiffening plate to body *BA33.10-P-1003-01I 
SPECIAL TOOL Drift set Fig 7
33 Lower front axle NOTES Carefully lower front axle. Do not crush any lines or hoses or subject them to tensile loads. Otherwise damage will occur.  
34 Recut and blow out threads for bolts (16b) in frame floor assembly NOTES It is essential to recut and blow out the threads.
The threaded connections can otherwise fail.
 
INSPECT Check     
35 Check bearings of front axle carrier   AR33.10-P-0040GQ 
IMPORTANT Check bearings for wear and damage, replace if necessary.
36 Install in the reverse order    
37 Fill and bleed active roll stabilization MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM)

INSPECT Check     
38 Check oil level in front axle transmission, correct if necessary Only with 4MATIC  
FLUID SPECIFICATION Filling capacity *BF33.30-P-1001-03D 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Oil filler screw, front axle transmission *BA33.30-P-1001-03F 
39 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200GQ
40 Inspect headlamp adjustment, correct if necessary
