Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle. In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
To transmit the information to the driver, the following displays can be shown in the instrument cluster:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, rotational speed, tank contents)
- Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
- Warning lamps (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Multifunction display (e.g. driver assistance systems, menu sequence)

Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
The multifunction display of the instrument cluster is activated by waking up the user interface CAN, e.g. by:
- Unlocking the vehicle through radio frequency
- Driver door opened
- Change of circuit status for circuit 15
After bus idle the instrument cluster remains active for t = 30 s. If a fault exists this time is increased to t = 120 s.
Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
- Terminal 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status to the instrument cluster via user interface CAN.
Function sequence for indicator lamp test
The indicator lamp test serves the function test of certain warning lamps and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster performs this test automatically each time circuit 15 is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- Fuel reserve indicator lamp
- Brake fluid and parking brake indicator lamp
- Seat belt warning lamp
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Supplemental restraint system indicator lamp
- Antilock brake system indicator lamp
- Regenerative braking system indicator lamp (model 205.012/047/147/212/247)
- ESP®/ASR OFF warning lamp
- Electronic Stability Program warning lamp
- ESP SPORT indicator lamp (model 205.086/087/286/287)
- Brake system warning lamp
- Coolant temperature warning lamp
- Engine diagnosis indicator lamp
- DISTRONIC warning lamp (with CODE 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) or CODE 258 (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST) or CODE 23P (Driving assistance package Plus))
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (with CODE 475 (Tire pressure monitor))
- Power steering warning lamp
The indicator lamp test is terminated when the engine is started.
The function of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
- Left turn signal indicator light
- Right turn signal indicator light
- High beam indicator lamp
- Preglow indicator lamp (diesel engine)
- Rear fog lamp indicator lamp
- Standing lamps indicator lamp
- Low beam indicator lamp
