Persons who wear electronic implants (e.g. cardiac pacemakers), must not  carry out any work on high-voltage on-board electrical systems. AS54.00-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Perform disable for the high-voltage on-board electrical system Model 222.004/057/104/157/163 AR54.10-P-1150LF
2 Deactivate easy entry/exit function for driver's seat and steering wheel Model 217

IMPORTANT See vehicle operating instructions.
 
3 Turn steering wheel to central position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and secure with the retaining device NOTES
The steering wheel must not be turned when detaching steering coupling.
Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

8 Detach steering coupling from rack-and-pinion steering (10) Model 222 up to 4/29/14 AR46.10-P-8000RK

9 Disconnect electrical connector (7)    
10 Remove bolt (8) and place cable duct (9) to one side Model 217, 222

11 Mount engine hoist and raise engine up to engine mount end stop Model 217 with engine 157, 276, 278, 279

12.1 Support rack-and-pinion steering (10) and secure to prevent it from falling down Model 217, 222

12.2 Support rack-and-pinion steering (10) on guard plate (14) and secure against falling down Model 217, 222

13 Remove bolts (5, 6) IMPORTANT Model 217, 222

Counterhold nuts with suitable tool (arrow).
 
14.1 Remove bolts (1, 2, 3, 4) and remove mounting plates (11) Model 217, 222

14.2 Unscrew bolts (1, 2, 12, 13) Model 217, 222

15.1 Remove rack-and-pinion steering (10) Model 217, 222

15.2 Remove rack-and-pinion steering (10) and remove guard plate (14) from rack-and-pinion steering (10) Model 217, 222

INSTALLING Install     
16 Detach protective foil of insulating plate (15) and bond insulating plate (15) to electrical power steering control unit (16) Model 217

When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (10).
IMPORTANT Check that the insulating plate (15) is positioned correctly. Position at the cutout on the electrical power steering control unit (16) and stick on.
 
17.1 Install rack-and-pinion steering (10) Model 217, 222
except code M005 (4MATIC)
IMPORTANT Replace bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and mounting plates (11).
IMPORTANT Fit the bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) but do not tighten.
 
17.2 Install rack-and-pinion steering (10) with guard plate (14) Model 217, 222
with code M005 (4MATIC)
IMPORTANT Replace bolts (1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13).
IMPORTANT Counterhold nuts of screws/bolts (5, 6) with suitable tool (arrow).
IMPORTANT Fit the screws/bolts (1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13) but do not tighten.
 
18.1 Tighten screws/bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) to final torque Model 217, 222

IMPORTANT When tightening, the following sequence must be observed: screws/bolts (5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 4).

28 Connect diagnostic system and perform initial startup of rack-and-pinion steering (10) When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (10).  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
29 Enter new steering number of rack-and-pinion steering (10) in online vehicle data card via vehicle documentation (VeDoc) When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (10).
IMPORTANT Redocumentation is absolutely essential.
 
30 Put high-voltage on-board electrical system into operation Model 222.004/057/104/157/163 AR54.10-P-1150LF
