Remove/install rear spring - AR32.20-P-0230GZ

MODEL 164, 166, 251 except CODE (489) AIRmatic (air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive damping system ADS)

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing  when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
Inspect special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection).
Wear protective gloves.

    NOTES While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surfaces of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the of the parts will be reduced.  
1 Detach complete wheel Model 164 AP40.10-P-4050Z
Model 166 AP40.10-P-4050EW
Model 251 AP40.10-P-4050RT
2 Mark installation position of all detachable parts of the rear spring (1) IMPORTANT Mark all detachable parts in color relative to each other, to body and to the lower control arm (2).  
3 Process closed lower spring retainer (5a) Vehicles with closed lower spring retainer (5a)
IMPORTANT Break bars out of closed lower spring retainer (5a) and smooth breaking edges in order to insert SPECIAL TOOL tensioning device (3a).

4 Insert upper clamping plate (3b), lower clamping plate (3c) and tensioning device (3a) IMPORTANT Insert SPECIAL TOOL upper clamping plate (3b) and lower SPECIAL TOOL clamping plate (3c) so that as many rear axle spring coils (1) as possible are clamped.

5 Clamp and remove rear spring (1) NOTESSPECIAL TOOL The tensioning device (3a) must not be tensioned or released using a pneumatically or electrically powered tool. Damage will occur otherwise.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT The tab on the punched lower spring retainer (5b) must latch into the groove in the lower control arm (2).
 
6 Release tension on rear spring (1) and clamp new rear spring (1) When replacing rear spring (1)
IMPORTANT Only replace rear springs (1) in pairs.
 
INSPECT Checking     
7 Remove all detachable parts and check IMPORTANT Replace closed lower spring retainer (5a) with punched lower spring retainer (5b).
IMPORTANT Check punched lower spring retainer (5b), upper spring retainer (4), rubber insert (7) and rubber boot (10) for signs of wear and damage, replace if necessary.
 
8 Adjust vehicle level Model 164, 251, if necessary  
Model 166 after replacing rear springs (1) and if necessary
IMPORTANT To do so, detach rubber boot (10) and plastic ring (9) from upper spring retainer (4) and remove or add space washers (8).

9 Replace expansion clip (6)    
10 Install in the reverse order    
11 Check vehicle level, adjust if necessary After replacing the rear springs (1)
