Removing, checking and installing rear axle brake pads - AR42.10-P-1700W

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
DANGER Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES Brake fluid notes   AH42.50-P-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on repairs to brake system   AH42.00-P-0003-01A
IMPORTANT Notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors   AH42.10-P-0003-01CW
1 Move brake lining (10) of rear axle into assembly position   AR42.10-P-1700-02W 
NOTES
Do not depress the service brake during "Move to assembly position".
Otherwise, the spindle in the brake caliper (3) can be damaged.
IMPORTANT The engine hood must be closed.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Exit assembly position of the rear-axle brake linings (10).
 
2 Switch off ignition and remove transmitter key or KEYLESS-GO start/stop button from electronic ignition lock control unit IMPORTANT KEYLESS-GO start/stop button only on vehicles with code (889) Keyless-Go.  
3 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position MODEL 166, 172  
MODEL 166 AR88.40-P-1000GQ
MODEL 172.4 AR88.40-P-1000V
4 Remove cover over left suspension strut tower MODEL 166  
CLEAN Clean     
5 Clean the area around the cap of the brake fluid reservoir Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
6 Unscrew cap of brake fluid reservoir and extract some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the brake fluid reservoir from overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
7 Detach rear complete wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   MODEL 166 AP40.10-P-4050EW
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   MODEL 172 AP40.10-P-4050V
8 Disconnect right rear brake lining wear sensor (S10/4) from electrical connection of right rear brake lining wear sensor (S10/4x1) IMPORTANT When removing the brake linings (10) on the right-hand side of the vehicle.  
9 Remove screw/bolt (4) and remove electrical connection of the right rear brake lining wear sensor (S10/4x1) MODEL 172
IMPORTANT When removing the brake linings (10) on the right-hand side of the vehicle.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION
MODEL 172

10.1 Unclip electrical line (7) from retaining frame (8) MODEL 172  
10.2 Release and disconnect electrical connector on electric parking brake actuator motor MODEL 166  
11 Remove bolt (1) on lower guide pin (5) IMPORTANT Counterhold guide pin (5).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION

12 Swivel brake caliper (3) upwards NOTES
Do not tension or kink brake hose (6). Attach brake caliper (3) to the vehicle free of tension to relieve the brake hose (6) and the electrical line (7).
Otherwise the brake hose (6) and the electrical line (7) can be damaged.
IMPORTANT Do not detach brake hose (6).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Guide the right rear brake lining wear sensor (S10/4) through the opening of the right brake caliper (3).
 
13 Remove brake linings (10) from brake caliper support (2) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not apply brake pastes or lubricants to brake linings (10) and brake calipers (3).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only sets of brake linings (10) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT The brake lining (10) with the mount for the brake lining wear sensor must be installed on the brake piston side.
 
14 Pull right rear brake lining wear sensor (S10/4) out of brake lining (10) When replacing the brake linings (10) on the right-hand-side of vehicle.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace defective right rear brake lining wear sensor (S10/4).
 
15 Remove spring plates (11) from brake caliper support (2)    
MEASURING Measure     
16 Check condition of brake linings (10) and measure degree of wear    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4253A
    IMPORTANT If necessary, replace brake linings (10).  
17 Check condition of brake disk (9) and gauge degree of wear    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   MODEL 172 AP42.10-P-4258V
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   MODEL 166
Replace brake disk (9) if necessary:

Remove/install brake disc
AP42.10-P-4258GQ
    MODEL 172.475 AR42.10-P-0220MMI
    MODEL 172 (except 172.475) AR42.10-P-0220W
    MODEL 166 AR42.10-P-0220GZ 
18 Check brake caliper (3) and dust boot (13) on brake piston for damage Replace brake caliper (3) if damaged:

Remove/install rear-axle brake caliper
 
AR42.10-P-0080W 
19 Check boots (12) for damage and correct seating and check guide pin (5) for ease of movement Replace brake caliper support (2) if damaged, see:
↓
Remove/install rear-axle brake caliper
 
AR42.10-P-0080W 
20 Press back brake piston using pusher tool (01) SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device
If brake piston is sluggish, replace brake caliper (3):

Remove/install rear-axle brake caliper

CLEAN Clean     
21 Clean contact surfaces of the brake linings (10) on brake caliper (3) and brake caliper support (2) using a rag NOTES
Do not damage dust boot (13) on the brake piston. Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects.
Otherwise the brake caliper (3) or the brake caliper support (2) can be damaged.
 
Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
22 Install in the reverse order    
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.   AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
23 Depress brake pedal several times until brake linings (10) rest against brake disks (9) IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
24 Check fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir, correct if necessary

25 Carry out brake test on the test stand
