Immediately following the oil change reset, the remaining distance which is displayed is 15, 000 kilometers or 10, 000 miles. The remaining distance calculated during the service interval is greatly dependent on the startup distance .
Startup distance
Startup distance refers to the minimum mileage in kilometers or miles which can be covered up to the next service. However, this only applies if the prescribed nominal quantity of engine oil was filled in when the oil was changed.
The startup distance is dependent on:
- The set quality factors
(The quality factors are set to basic settings in the factory. If the operating conditions necessitate this, these may be changed with Star diagnosis.)
The startup distance is not dependent on the driving conditions (evaluation of the distance covered) or any possible oil top-ups .
The standard value is normally 15, 000 kilometers or 10, 000 miles. Depending on quality factors, however, the value may deviate from this.
Following each oil change, the startup distance is automatically set to its initial value by the oil change reset. The startup distance is an internal operand, and cannot be displayed in the instrument cluster (A1). The startup distance can only be displayed with Star diagnosis.
The remaining distance is normally displayed in the right multifunction display (A1p15) of the instrument cluster (A1).
Remaining distance
Immediately following the oil change, the remaining distance is identical to the startup distance. However, this only applies if the prescribed nominal quantity of engine oil was filled in when the oil was changed.
The remaining distance is the distance remaining between the current kilometer reading and the next service. The possible interval length is at least as long as the remaining distance displayed immediately following an oil change. At most, however, it is twice the startup distance.
The remaining distance is dependent:
- on the startup distance
- on the driving conditions (Evaluation of the course covered is carried out to this end.)
- on any possible oil top-ups
Therefore, ASSYST also takes the driving conditions into consideration:
In the event of favorable evaluation e.g. due to:
- few cold starts,
- no high engine speeds,
- few short-distance runs,
and oil top-ups, the driver is provided with a quantity rebate, which extends the remaining distance and therefore the service interval.
In the adjacent sketch, the startup distance and the remaining distance are again depicted in graphical form:
Following each oil change, the startup and remaining distance are set to the initial value. In this case, the standard value of 15, 000 km (hatched + dark section) is entered as the startup distance (top bar). The startup distance may deviate from the 15, 000 km (e.g. 14, 000 km; hatched section) if the quality factors do not correspond to the basic setting. The startup distance may also be less than 15, 000 km if the prescribed nominal quantity of engine oil is not filled in when the oil is changed.
Under all circumstances, however, the remaining distance (lower bar) is 15, 000 km or 10, 000 miles immediately following the oil change. The service interval is also always at least 15, 000 km or 10, 000 miles.
Via a corresponding quantity rebate (favorable evaluation of the routes or via oil top-ups), the entire remaining distance and therefore the service interval can be increased to a maximum of twice the startup distance, in this case 30, 000 km or 20, 000 miles (white section).
However, a startup distance of less than 15, 000 km or 10, 000 miles results in a reduction of the maximum achievable service interval. In this regard, also refer to the diagrams in the document "ENGINE OIL MONITORING FUNCTION ".
The matter of whether the vehicle is actually being driven or whether the engine is idling is also taken into consideration. In order to achieve this, ASSYST is continuously provided with data regarding the vehicle's current operating conditions.
- In the event of optimum evaluation
, only 0.6 km
are calculated for each kilometer covered.
In the event of unfavorable evaluation of the route (e.g. frequent short-distance runs, many cold starts), the remaining distance, and therefore the service interval, are less than in the event of favorable evaluation. (Presupposing the same quality factors.)
- In the event of the most unfavorable evaluation, up to 3 km are calculated for each kilometer covered.
Warning threshold (distance)
With Star diagnosis, a warning threshold of between 250 km and 8, 000 km can be set for the remaining distance.
This warning threshold is set differently for 3 different mileages. By determining the daily mileage, the system adjusts itself to the correct annual mileage (see chart):

If the remaining distance falls below the set warning threshold, the remaining distance is automatically blended in.
Display of the remaining distance (According to the setting, the display is carried out in kilometers or miles in the right multifunction display (A1p15) of the instrument cluster.):
- at the request of the driver
- automatically, after reaching the warning threshold
, after the starter switch has been set to position "2" or the engine has been started:
The service symbol and the following display appear for 10 s: "SERVICE IN xxxx KM" .
- automatically, on expiry of the remaining distance
, after the starter switch has been set to position "2" or the engine has been started:
The service symbol and the following display appear for 10 s "PERFORM SERVICE" .
- automatically, after exceeding the remaining distance by more than 100 kilometers
, after the starter switch has been set to position "2" or the engine has been started:
The service symbol and the following display appear for 10 s "SERVICE EXCEEDED BY xxxx KM" .
The remaining distance is displayed with a resolution of 100 km or 100 miles.
All displays are depicted in the document "Mercedes-Benz Driver Information Service".
The remaining distance is displayed as standard. However, so that the attention of drivers of vehicles with low annual mileage is also drawn to a due service, the time information is also always processed in the background.
The remaining distance is compared with the remaining time on a daily basis. Under the prerequisites described in the document "remaining time function", the display switches over and the remaining time is displayed.
If ASSYST is missing measurement values, e.g. due to the failure of a sensor, it uses the substitute values stored in the control modules.
A corresponding entry is made in the diagnostic trouble code memory of the relevant control module (ME-SFI control module (N3/10), ESP, SPS and BAS control module (N47-5), SBC control module (A7/3n1) or instrument cluster (A1)).
If the operating voltage fails, the data are retained.
