The signal processing required for the volume and tone settings is accomplished by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). If the vehicle is additionally equipped with the amplifier for sound system (N40/3) (sound system, code 810), this amplifier provides the final amplification of the audio signals.
Audio sources are:
- Radio
- CD player
- 6-disk CD changer, code 819
Service sources include:
- Telephone
- Traffic announcement
- Voice output for navigation
- Voice output for voice control system (VCS [SBS]), code 813
Volume
A different volume setting is possible for the navigation and for the telephone. A shared setting applies to the other modes. The set volume is stored automatically by the COMAND operating, display and control unit for the currently active mode. The volume for navigation announcements can only be set during an announcement.
Automatic volume control
Automatic volume control regulates the volume
- dependent on the vehicle speed (in vehicles without sound system, code 810) or the noises inside the vehicle (in vehicles with sound system, code 810) and for
- additional parameters such as window open or closed.
Volume setting
The volume can be adjusted with the rotary pushbutton of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit for each of the selected audio sources as well as for the voice output for navigation, voice output for voice control system (VCS [SBS]), and telephone.
The volume can also be controlled via the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) using the buttons + and - for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1).
After switching back on, the volume may be quieter than when switched off.
It is quieter if
- the COMAND operating, display and control unit was switched off for longer than 15 minutes and
- the volume was set to a value within a specific range (e.g. too loud) before switching off.
Muting
Pressing the "Speaker symbol" function key activates or deactivates the mute function.
When muting is activated, only traffic announcements and navigation announcements are audible.
Tone setting
The COMAND operating, display and control unit allows manual tone settings for each audio source.
The tone settings include:
- Treble and bass
- Balance/fader
- Sound (only with sound system, code 810)
Treble and bass
Differentiated treble and bass control is possible with the following features:
- Radio (AM, FM)
- CD drive and CD changer
- AUX mode
- Navigation mode
Pressing the "Bass" or "Treble" soft key on the right of the multifunction key strip causes the display for setting the bass or treble to appear.
The "left" and "right" arrow keys can be used to set the treble and bass.
Pressing the "OK" button of the eight-way adjuster saves the adjusted value. If the user waits until the display changes, the value is also stored.
Balance/Fader
Pressing the "Bal/Fad" soft key on the right multifunction key strip causes the display for adjusting the balance and fader to appear.
The display shows a horizontal and vertical line which intercept. The horizontal line represents the fader and the vertical line, the balance.
The "left" and "right" arrow keys can be used to set the balance and the "up" and "down" arrow keys the fader.
The setting is stored by pressing the "OK" button on the joystick or the "Back" soft key of the right multifunction key strip. If the operator waits until the display changes, the value is also stored.
The following modes have a separate balance and fader setting:
- AUX mode
- Navigation
SOUND
(with sound system, code 810)
Sound settings are possible with the following features:
- Radio
- CD drive and CD changer
- AUX
The following settings are possible:
- Manufacturer default settings, reset of sound functions to manufacturer default settings
- Standard, conventional stereo playback
- Language, playback optimized for voice output
- LOGIC7, Surround playback
The arrow keys "Up" and "Down" can be used to select the desired setting. Pressing the "OK" button saves the setting.
The seven channel surround playback does not work with mono signal sources such as the AM wavebands in radio mode.
