HD radio (High Definition radio) function - GF82.60-P-2030GQU

MODEL 164.1 with CODE (517) HD radio as of model year 2009/YoM 08 model refinement package

MODEL 164.8, 251.0/1 with CODE (517) HD radio as of model year 2009/YoM 08

Function requirements, general

HD radio (High Definition radio), general

The HD radio function is implemented in the high definition tuner control unit (N87/8). The high definition tuner control unit is a combined AM/FM/Weather Band (WB) receiver with HD radio function and satellite radio for audio and traffic data reception. The AM/FM receiver function allows reception of analog AM and FM signals. FM signal reception is optimized by use of a double tuner.

The WB feature allows reception of WB signals in the USA. The HD radio function allows additional reception of digital carrier waves for analog AM/FM programs, which are also broadcast by the stations.

The HD radio function improves the audio quality using digital technology:

The stations also broadcast other audio channels and data with the digital carriers. This supplements the program with up to 2 additional audio channels per frequency (e.g. foreign language program from "National Public Radio") and supplemental information (e.g. title and artist) can be received.

Additional transmission of digital carriers is designated as "On Channel", the digital station is tuned to the same frequency as the analog station.

The digital transmission process in the FM and AM band is known as "in-band".

In contrast to satellite digital audio radio (satellite radio) (SDAR), with HD radio regional stations and programs can be received without incurring fees.

The SDAR function allows reception of over 100 digital audio channels from the "Sirius Satellite Radio" provider. Moreover, additional data such as title and artist and the entire station list are transmitted.

As of 1.7.09 Real Time Traffic Data (RTTD) can also be received. RTTD is real time traffic data that is broadcast by the "Sirius Satellite Radio" provider. This data is available in the USA and is transmitted in loops of approx. t = 5 min. The data contain accident and traffic jam messages as well as traffic flow information. The data are made available to the navigation.

To achieve multi-channel reception, the Sirius satellite radio signal is transmitted 3 times (from two satellites and a network of terrestrial stations).

The HD radio feature allows the following signals to be received:

The SDAR function allows the following signals to be received:

The HD radio can be controlled with the following components:

Function sequence

The high definition tuner control unit receives the FM2 and Weather Band signals via the following route:

The high definition tuner control unit receives the "S-band satellite and S-band terrestrial signals" with the traffic information signals contained therein via the following route:

The high definition tuner control unit receives the AM and FM2 signals via the following route:

The high definition tuner control unit demodulates the analog AM and FM signals using the two integrated double tuners and decodes the digital AM and FM signals using the integrated HD radio decoder chip.

The signals for "S-band satellite and S-band terrestrial" are also demodulated and decoded by the high definition tuner control unit.

Demodulated and decoded analog and digital signals are transferred as digital audio and data signals from the high definition tuner control unit via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the navigation unit integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The COMAND operating, display and controller unit shows the information contained in the signals via the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. This procedure runs internally in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The traffic data is processed and displayed on the navigation unit integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The operator can now use the "Audio" menu item and "Sat Radio" submenu item with the aid of the following controls in each band to select the desired station:

The control signals from the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally.

The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the following route:

When voice control is activated on the VCS [SBS], the voice commands are received by the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1) and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

IMPORTANT Detailed information about activation and control of the VCS voice control can be found in the "Voice control function" service information.

After the desired station has been selected, the audio signals in vehicles with code (810) Sound system are transferred by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the MOST to the amplifier for sound system (N40/3) and from there via direct lines to the following speakers:

IMPORTANT The audio signal for the subwoofer speaker (H4/29) travels from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the sound system amplifier via MOST and from there, over direct lines, to the subwoofer amplifier (N40/9) and then to the subwoofer speaker.

IMPORTANT On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio signals and data are output by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via direct lines to the following speakers:
