Radio
The roof antenna module (A2/93) filters the amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) signals, amplifies them, and relays them to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). The AM and FM signals are demodulated in the radio receiver for FM or AM (SW, MW, LW), the useful signal is amplified and output via the vehicle speakers. With code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are digitized and transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the amplifier for sound system (N40/3). There, the audio signals are processed, amplified and emitted over the vehicle speakers.

- Automatic station search for traffic information stations after loss of the Traffic Program (TP) station (background scan)
- Radio Data System - Enhanced Other Networks (RDS-EON) (reception of TP stations that are part of the same network of stations)
- SEEK (automatic station search)
- Tune (manual tuning)
- Last mode (last radio station selected is selected again after switch-on)
- Selection of the preferred radio station via buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and via the function keys of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) (left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110), right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111))
Playing audio CDs
The single slot drive above the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the CD changer (A2/6) (Code (819) 6-disk CD changer) are capable of playing CD audio media (in Red Book audio format) and data CDs with MP3 files (max. 99 tracks). The following can be controlled with the menu:
- "TrackMix" (Off, CD, all CDs in CD changer)
- "Repeat" (Off, Track, CD)
- Track skip forward and backward
- Manual track entry via keys, "*" and numbers
- Stop and Play (for mute only)
- Track search forward and backward
- Intro Scan
- Automatic CD reload (when medium is not removed from slot after 20 seconds)
- Display of time, title and number of all the pieces of music
- Track number of the music track currently playing
- Repeat status, track switch, play switch, random play switch
With code (819) 6-disk CD changer, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit automatically displays which CD slot has a CD in it. In the process, the CD change slots are shown numbered consecutively (CD 1 to CD 6).
User guidance for controlling CD functionality and displaying supplemental information is carried out in the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The most important data is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1).
The most important functions can also be controlled using the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (left multifunction steering wheel button group, right multifunction steering wheel button group).
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, audio signals are digitally transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the amplifier for sound system via the MOST. The amplifier for sound system (code (810) Sound system) amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the vehicle's audio speakers.
On vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are amplified by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and output directly over the audio speakers installed in the vehicle.
The voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS])) and the related audio functions are actuated via the multifunction steering wheel using the VCS [SBS] ON button (S111s4) and VCS [SBS] OFF button (S110s4). A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.
Along with playing audio media, the disk drive of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is also required to read in navigation data from the navigation DVD.
This contains the important map data for map navigation for example. The navigation system functions here using a "corridor function", i.e. as long as the corridor for the calculated route is not deviated from, navigation with active front audio is possible. If the navigation DVD is removed during active navigation, then a map can no longer be displayed on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. Navigation is displayed as a pictogram only in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
An external analog audio source can be connected to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the AUX jack in the glove box. Data exchange via a discrete line.
