The exterior lights (ABL) include the following functions: 

• Standing lights, parking lights actuation

  • Daytime running lamps actuation
  • Auto on/off headlamps

  • Additionally for model 216 with code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic):
    • Motorway lights
    • Extended fog light function
• Front fog lights actuation

• Turn signal lamp actuation
  • Turn signaling actuation
  • Hazard warning flasher actuation

The front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) is the master control unit for the exterior lights (ABL). The rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) is the master control unit for all turn signal functions.

The following control units are networked to each other over the interior CAN:

• front SAM control unit
• Left door control unit (N69/1) (model 216), Left front door control unit (N69/1) (model 221)
• Right door control unit (N69/2) (model 216), Right front door control unit (N69/2) (model 221)
• Rear SAM control unit
• Trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) (for code (550) Trailer hitch)

Actuations 

The Xenon headlamp control units (E1n1, E2n1) are networked over the front end CAN with the central gateway control unit (N93).

The central gateway control unit detects the requests issued by the front SAM control unit over the interior CAN and makes them available to the Xenon headlamp control units on the front end CAN.

• The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:
  • Left front lamp unit (E1)
  • Right front lamp unit (E2)
  • Left front fog lamp (E5/1)
  • Right front fog lamp (E5/2)
  • Left front side-marker lamp (E6/1)
  • Right front side-marker lamp (E6/2)
• The left door control unit actuates the following components:
  • Left outside mirror turn signal lamp (E6/5)
  • Left outside mirror ambient lamp (M21/1e1)
• The right door control unit actuates the following components:
  • Right outside mirror turn signal lamp (E6/6)
  • Right outside mirror ambient lamp (M21/2e1)
• The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components:
  • Left taillamp (E3)
  • Right taillamp (E4)
  • Left license plate lamp (E19/1)
  • Right license plate lamp (E19/2)
  • Center high-mounted stop lamp (E21)

Vehicles with code (550) Trailer hitch 

• The trailer recognition control unit actuates the trailer hitch socket (13-pin) (X58).
