Function requirements, general

- Compatible mobile phone connected to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable or Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone in the vehicle and authorized on the COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
The Japan electrical connector adapter cable is used to connect the various mobile phones to the communications control unit.
A Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone can only be operated in the vehicle when a mobile phone is not connected to the cell phone separation point or the adapter cable.
In order to be able to operate a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone that is authorized on the "audio equipment" in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5.
General
The mobile phone system allows mobile phones operating with the Personal Digital Cellular (PDC), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) or Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access (FOMA) networks to be operated in the vehicle.
The system is described using a mobile phone connected to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable as an example. Deviations from this are indicated with the symbol
.
The mobile phone system consists of the following component functions:
- Switch on/off characteristics
- Establish call and terminate call
- Accepting calls, rejecting calls and toggling
- Electronic mail (email)
- Address book
- "Seamless Switch"
- "Private Mode"
Switching on and off characteristics
For status "circuit 30 ON" the COMAND control unit has to be manually switched on so that the mobile phone is switched on via a wake-up pulse from the COMAND control unit.
For status "circuit 15R ON" the COMAND controller unit is automatically switched on; this in turn also automatically switches on the mobile phone by means of a wake-up pulse from the COMAND controller unit.
The mobile phone can be switched off at status "circuit 30 ON" by manually switching off the COMAND controller unit, which sends a corresponding signal to the mobile phone, or following expiration of the run-on time as configured on the mobile phone.
The mobile phone is switched off automatically at status "circuit 15R OFF" by the COMAND controller unit, which sends a corresponding signal to the mobile phone, or following expiration of the run-on time as configured on the mobile phone.
A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth can be switched on and off only with the buttons on the mobile phone itself.
The switch-on and switch-off function consists of the following two subfunctions:

Switch on function sequence
The switch on signal (wake-up pulse) is forwarded by the COMAND controller unit as follows to the mobile phone:
- Direct line
- Communications control unit
- Japan electrical connector adapter cable
The mobile phone is then switched on and supplied with power. After the mobile phone is switched on, a lock code inquiry is made if the mobile phone is so configured and transmits this status.
The lock code inquiry is relayed by the COMAND control unit to the audio/COMAND display as well as via the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.
Depending on the request concerned the lock-code must be entered by one of the following options:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone buttons on the COMAND controller unit
- Audio/COMAND control panel
The control signals of the mobile phone buttons are forwarded via the following route to the COMAND controller unit:
- Japan electrical connector adapter cable
- Communications control unit
- Direct line
The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit. The control signals from the COMAND controller unit telephone buttons are processed internally. After entering the lock-code, the reception status is received by the COMAND controller unit in the following way over the multifunction antenna:
- Japan electrical connector adapter cable
- Communications control unit
- Direct line
The reception status is indicated by the COMAND control unit via a Low Voltage Differential Signal (LVDS) line on the audio/COMAND display.
A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth processes the switch-on signal internally in the mobile phone. The lock code inquiry is only shown on the display of the mobile phone, if configured on the mobile phone and if the mobile phone transmits this status. The lock-code can only be entered using the mobile phone buttons. The reception status is received by the mobile phone's antenna. The display of the lock-code and the reception status as well as the signals of the mobile phone buttons are processed internally in the mobile phone.
Switch off function sequence
The switch-off signal is forwarded by the COMAND controller unit to the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communications control unit
- Japan electrical connector adapter cable
The mobile phone is then switched off and power supply interrupted. Expiration of the run-on time configured in the mobile phone takes place internally in the mobile phone.
A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth processes the switch-off signal internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone.
Establishing call and terminating call
The establish call and terminate call function consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for establishing and terminating calls via mobile telephone buttons
Dialing the telephone number using the buttons on the mobile phone or selecting the telephone number from the mobile phone's telephone book and pressing the "Accept call button" initiates the telephone call in handsfree mode.
Pressing the "QUIT" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call.
The control signals of the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and forwarded via the following route to the COMAND controller unit:
- Japan electrical connector adapter cable
- Communications control unit
- Direct line
With a mobile phone operating with Bluetooth, the control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally. They are not forwarded to the COMAND controller unit. The telephone call is completed in "Private mode" when the mobile phone supports "Private mode" "Private mode" is activated.
Function sequence for establishing and terminating calls via telephone buttons on COMAND control unit
Dialing the telephone number using the phone buttons on the COMAND controller unit and pressing the "Accept phone call" button establishes the telephone call in the handsfree mode. Pressing the "END" button on the COMAND controller unit terminates the telephone call.
The control signals from the COMAND controller unit telephone buttons are processed internally.
Function sequence for establishing and terminating calls via audio/COMAND control panel
The basic telephone (ComTel) function is activated using the TEL hardkey on the COMAND controller unit or the ComTel menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display using the Audio/COMAND control panel and then shown on the Audio/COMAND display.
The user can then select a telephone number via the Audio/COMAND control panel using one of the following options:

- Search for telephone number using "Name" menu entry in the phone book
- Search for the telephone number using the "Address Book" menu entry in the address book
- Search for telephone number using the "Call Lists" (received or dialed) menu entry in the call lists
Activating the "SEND" function establishes the telephone call in the handsfree mode.
When the "Reject" option is activated in the basic ComTel function on the Audio/COMAND display, the telephone call is terminated. The control signals from the COMAND controller unit TEL hardkey are processed internally.
The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit. The menu item is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit via an LVDS line.
Function sequence for establishing and terminating calls via multifunction steering wheel button group
The address book of the COMAND controller unit or the phone book of the mobile phone is selected by pressing the system selection button (S110s3) via the selection menu in the instrument cluster. The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or the phone book of the mobile phone using the scroll forward and back button (S110s1).
A telephone call can be completed in the hands-free mode as well as terminated with the accept and end phone call button (S111s3) in the corresponding subfield.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded over the following components to the COMAND controller unit:
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module control unit
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
The display in the instrument cluster is generated by the COMAND controller unit over the interior CAN.
Establish call function sequence using voice control system
Pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the voice control system.
The voice control system button control signal is forwarded via the following components to the COMAND controller unit:
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module control unit
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
A signal sound is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.
The signal sound is output by the COMAND controller unit via direct lines to the speaker system.

Now different voice commands can be used to search and select a telephone number.
The voice commands are recorded by the handsfree system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit.
The voice control of the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is used to establish the telephone call in the hands-free mode.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Function sequence for establishing and terminating calls in hands-free mode
After the telephone call has been established the COMAND controller unit transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communications control unit
- Direct line
- Japan electrical connector adapter cable
- Direct line
- Multifunction antenna
The voice input in hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit.
The signals for the voice output are transmitted by the COMAND control unit to the speaker system via direct line.

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the COMAND controller unit transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data via the Bluetooth antenna and the mobile phone antenna, except when the telephone call is established using the mobile phone buttons. In the event of establishing a telephone call using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data via the mobile phone antenna. Voice input takes place using the microphone integrated in the mobile phone and voice output is emitted via the speakers integrated into the mobile phone ("private mode").
Once the telephone call has been terminated, the COMAND controller unit interrupts transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals or data. This happens internally in the COMAND controller unit.
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the COMAND controller unit discontinues transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals and data in an internal control unit procedure except when a call is terminated using the buttons on the mobile phone.
When a telephone call is terminated using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of mobile phone signals or data. This process runs internally in the mobile phone.
Accepting, rejection a call and control for call waiting
Accepting a call, rejecting a call and control of call waiting consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence, call signal
The mobile phone receives a call signal from the multifunction antenna via the Japan electrical connector adapter cable. The caller is shown on the mobile phone display and at the same time the information is sent to the Audio/COMAND display as follows:

- LVDS line
The ring sound is emitted by the COMAND controller unit via direct lines at the speaker system.

The call identification is sent by the COMAND controller unit via a LVDS line and shown on the Audio/COMAND display. The call identification is also shown in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the required data via the interior CAN from the COMAND controller unit.
A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth receives the call signal via the mobile phone antenna. The call signal is then forwarded to the COMAND controller unit in the via the following route:
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
Function sequence for accepting and rejecting a call via mobile phone buttons
Pressing the "Accept call" button on the mobile phone serves to accept the call in hands-free mode. Pressing the "End" button on the mobile phone rejects the call. The control signals of the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and forwarded via the following route to the COMAND controller unit:

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the control signals from the mobile phone buttons are processed internally and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit as follows:
- Mobile phone antenna

Function sequence for accepting and rejecting a call via telephone buttons on COMAND control unit
Pressing the "Accept phone call" button on the COMAND controller unit serves to accept the call in hands-free mode.
Pressing the "End" button on the COMAND controller unit once puts the call on hold. Pressing the "END" button on the COMAND controller unit twice rejects the call on.
The control signals from the COMAND controller unit telephone buttons are processed internally.
Function sequence for accepting and rejecting a call via mobile phone buttons via audio/COMAND control panel
The caller identification is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit via an LVDS line by means of the call signal.
Selection of the "Accept" option using the Audio/COMAND control panel enables the call to be accepted in hands-free mode. By selecting the "Reject" option the call is then rejected. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
Function sequence for accepting and rejecting a call via multifunction steering wheel button group
S111s3The call is accepted or rejected in hands-free mode by pressing the accept/terminate phone call button in the corresponding subfield.
The control signal of the accept/terminate phone call button are forwarded via the following components to the COMAND controller unit:

Function sequence for telephone call in handsfree mode
After the telephone call has been accepted, the COMAND controller unit receives or transmits the mobile phone signals or data via the following route:
- Multifunction antenna
- Direct line
- Japan electrical connector adapter cable
- Direct line
- Communications control unit
- Direct line
Voice input in the hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit and from there emitted by means of direct lines at the following speaker system:
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the COMAND controller unit receives or transmits the mobile phone signals or data as follows:
- Mobile phone antenna
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
Generally, after accepting the call the telephone connection is established in hands-free mode, irrespective of whether the mobile phone is connected to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable or not.
If, after the telephone connection has been established in hands-free mode, a mobile phone attached to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable is disconnected from the Japan electrical connector adapter cable and therefore from the COMAND controller unit, the telephone call is then conducted in "Private Mode".
If the mobile phone is reattached to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable during a telephone call, the telephone call is then conducted in the hands-free mode again.
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, it is possible to change over to "Private mode" after accepting a telephone call in handsfree mode by activating "Private mode" in the mobile phone when the mobile phone supports "Private mode". (When in "Private mode" the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation.)
Function sequence for control for call waiting
If another call signal is received during a telephone call then it is displayed by the COMAND controller unit over a low voltage differential signal line on the Audio/COMAND display. The telephone call can now be accepted or rejected. If the incoming call is accepted, it is activated in hands-free mode and the existing call is terminated. The incoming telephone call can be accepted or rejected with the telephone buttons on the COMAND control unit, the audio/COMAND control panel or the telephone call acceptance and termination button the button group on the right side of the multifunction steering wheel. The control signals from the COMAND controller unit telephone buttons are processed internally.
The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit. The control signals from the telephone accept/terminate call are relayed to the COMAND control unit via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module control unit
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
Additional function requirements for electronic mail (email)
- The following provider settings have been completed:
- Connection name, dial-in number, telephone name
- DNS server 1 and 2, proxy server, port number, APN
- Time Limit, Data communication, Mail Account
- Mail password, mail address, user, homepage
- Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) server (for receiving emails)
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server (for transmitting emails)
No more than 3 providers can be set.
Electronic mail (email)
The email application enables the user to manage his/her emails (e.g. read or write).
The following email functions are available:
- Receive and read emails
- Compose and send emails
Emails can only be composed, read and sent over the Audio/COMAND control panel and the Audio/COMAND display.
The email function consists of the following component functions:

Incoming emails are received by the COMAND controller unit via the following route:

Emails can be called up in the basic function Telephone (ComTel) in the menu item mail where they can be selected and read on the audio/COMAND display.
The control signals from the COMAND controller unit TEL hardkey are processed internally. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via the telematics CAN (CAN A) to the COMAND controller unit. The Email menu item and the selected email are shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line.
With a Bluetooth mobile phone the COMAND control unit receives emails in the following manner:
- Mobile phone antenna
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
Compose and send emails function sequence
Emails can only be written and sent via the Audio/COMAND control panel and the Audio/COMAND display in the Email menu item in the basic telephone (ComTel) function.
The Email menu item in the basic telephone (ComTel) function is selected using the TEL hardkey on the COMAND controller unit or via the ComTel menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display using the Audio/COMAND control panel and then shown on the Audio/COMAND display.
The control signals from the COMAND controller unit TEL hardkey are processed internally.
The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
The Email menu item and the composed email are shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit via an LVDS line.
Emails are then sent to the receiver by the COMAND controller unit via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communications control unit
- Japan electrical connector adapter cable
- Direct line
- Multifunction antenna
On a Bluetooth mobile phone that is not connected and operated via Bluetooth, the COMAND controller unit transmits emails to the recipient via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Mobile phone
Address book
The address book contains the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create).
With a mobile phone connected to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable, data (names and standard numbers) can also be loaded from the phone book of the mobile phone into the address book of the COMAND controller unit. The data from the phone book of the mobile phone is also permanently available, even if the mobile phone is no longer attached to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable.
Data can also be transferred from other external devices (e.g. PDAs, laptops, etc.) to the address book via the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna. The PCMCIA slot on the COMAND controller unit can be used to transfer vCards from a PCMCIA card into the address book. These data are then permanently available as address entries.
Address-relevant mobile phone system functions can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. Address entries can contain the following:
- Names (surname and first name)
- "Yomigana field" (phonetic entry of the name in "Katakana" syllabary) (with code (498) Japan version)
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (private, business, fixed line network, mobile or car)
- Company name
- Geo position
- Notes
Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book.
150 entries can be provided with voice commands (voice tags) for the voice control system (VCS). The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field". The address book displays the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit and the data loaded from the mobile phone's telephone book.
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).
"Seamless Switch"
"Seamless switch" means either than an existing call to the mobile phone is held when the phone is separated from the Japan electrical connector adapter cable or that an existing call is routed to the COMAND controller unit when the mobile phone is connected to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable.
"Private Mode"
When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. To make a call in "Private Mode", one of the following processes must be completed:
- Disconnection of mobile phone from Japan electrical connector adapter cable during a telephone call in hands-free mode
- Call acceptance in hands-free mode and subsequent activation of "Private Mode" menu item via the Audio/COMAND control panel and the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) when the mobile phone is disconnected from the Japan electrical connector adapter cable and operated via Bluetooth
- Establishing a call using buttons on mobile phone when mobile phone is disconnected from Japan electrical connector adapter cable and operated via Bluetooth
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the phone call is completed in "Private mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private mode" and "Private mode" is activated.
