Function requirements for mobile phone system, general 

Mobile telephone system, general 

A differentiation is made between the variants in the mobile phone system:

IMPORTANT Telephony with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP requires equipment with code (386) Mobile phone. Instead of the mobile phone cradle (accessories), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) can be plugged onto the Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or onto the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013).

All variants use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer. In order to be able to operate a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone that is authorized on the audio equipment in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or higher.

IMPORTANT The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example. The special features of comfort telephony and telephony with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP are summarized at the end of this document.

The functional scope is not only dependent on the vehicle equipment, but also on the mobile phone used and the settings on the mobile phone.

IMPORTANT A mobile phone authorized on the audio equipment can also be used as a modem for access to the Internet or as a playback device as part of the Bluetooth® audio setup, cf. the documents "Internet access function" or "Audio mode function".

The mobile phone system includes the following areas:

Bluetooth® 

Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to connect modern communication devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) or laptops to the mobile phone system quickly and easily. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The extremely high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) for this type of Bluetooth® connection are what make the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting.

The audio equipment can integrate the latest-generation mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the Bluetooth® interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna. The audio equipment automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone which responds first.

IMPORTANT With code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP a search is initially made for the last two connected SIM Access Profile (SAP) telephones, with code (386) Comfort telephony except code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP a search is first made for a mobile phone plugged into the mobile phone cradle (accessories).

If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the audio equipment or if the audio equipment is to establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually over the "Telephone" base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first.

IMPORTANT SAP telephones (with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) are placed into a new list. Up to 15 mobile phones and up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized at the same time. If more telephones are authorized, the oldest data records in each case will be overwritten. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.

Switch on/off characteristics 

A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® is switched on and off on the mobile phone itself. A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth® processes the switch-on signal internally in the mobile phone. The display of the Personal Identification Number (PIN) prompt, if configured on the mobile phone and if it sends the status, only occurs on the mobile phone display. PIN entry is made on the mobile phone only. The reception status is received by the mobile phone's antenna. The display of the PIN and the reception status is processed internally in the mobile phone. The signals of the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally by the mobile phone. After logging into the mobile phone service provider's mobile phone network, a display is shown on the mobile phone display and the Audio/COMAND display. The mobile phone's switch-off signal is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone.

Establish call and terminate call 

The establish call and terminate call function consists of the following subfunctions:

Establish and terminate telephone call via the buttons on the mobile phone 

On a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth®, the control signals of the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and not forwarded to the audio equipment.

The phone call is established depending on the model and configuration either in hands-free mode or in the "Private Mode".

IMPORTANT In "Private Mode" the user makes a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to take part in the conversation, i.e. voice input takes place via the microphone integrated in the mobile phone, and voice output takes place via the speaker integrated in the mobile phone.

When a telephone call is terminated using the mobile phone, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of mobile phone signals or data. This process runs internally in the mobile phone.

Establish and terminate telephone call via the Audio/COMAND control panel, telephone buttons or keypad on the audio unit 

The "Telephone" base function is called up using the Audio/COMAND control panel via the "Telephone" menu item in the application bar or using the "TEL" button on the audio equipment. The "Telephone" base function is shown on the Audio/COMAND display. The following ways of dialing a telephone number are now available to the user:

The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down. After dialing the telephone number via the telephone buttons on the audio equipment and pressing the "Accept phone call" button or by selecting the telephone function via the keypad on the audio equipment and then activating the "TRANSMIT" function, the telephone call is established in hands-free mode (see function sequence "Establish telephone call in hands-free mode"). The phone call is terminated by pressing the "END" button on the audio equipment or by activating the "END" function in the "Telephone" basic function.

The control signals of the telephone keys or the keypad on the audio equipment are processed internally. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via telematics CAN and via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media) to the audio equipment. The display on the Audio/COMAND display occurs via an LVDS line and via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media).

Establish and terminate telephone call via the multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The phone book or the address book (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer) of the audio equipment is selected by pressing the System selection (S110s3) button via the instrument cluster's selection menu. The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the phone book or the address book using the scroll forward and back button (S110s1).

The telephone call is established and terminated in hands-free mode with the accept and terminate phone call button (S111s3) (see function sequence "Establish telephone call in hands-free mode").

The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the following components:

Establish call through the voice control system (VCS) (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer) 

Pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the voice control system.

The control signal of the voice control system ON button is forwarded via the following components to the audio equipment:

A signal sound is emitted after the voice control system has been activated. The signal tone is emitted by the audio equipment over the vehicle's speaker system.

In vehicles with code (810) Sound system the signal tone from the audio equipment is sent over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit and then emitted over the speaker system.

IMPORTANT More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" document.

Establishing a call is activated in the dialog with the VCS [SBS] with the help of voice commands, e.g. with the following:

IMPORTANT The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

The voice commands are registered by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment over a direct line. The audio equipment sends the control signals via a direct line and the Bluetooth antenna to the mobile phone. The voice control of the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is used to establish the telephone call in the hands-free mode.

Establishing a call via remote control (model 204.9 with code (867) SPLITVIEW) 

The mobile phone system can be operated using the remote control. The COMAND controller unit receives the infrared signals from the remote control via its integrated infrared interface.

Establish telephone call in hands-free mode 

After the telephone call has been established, the audio equipment sends the mobile phone signals or data over the Bluetooth antenna to the mobile phone. The mobile phone signals and data are received by the mobile phone via the reverse route.

The voice input in hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment via a direct line. The audio equipment sends the signals over direct lines to the speaker system or, for vehicles with code (810) Sound system, over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.

Terminate phone call in hands-free mode 

After a phone call has been terminated, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals. This takes place internally in the mobile phone.

Accepting calls, rejecting calls and toggling 

The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate, terminate or toggle a telephone call to another person in the cellular telephone system network or in the fixed-line network. It is possible to accept, reject or toggle a call using the following components:

The "Accept call, reject call and toggle" function comprises the following subfunctions:

Call signal 

The mobile phone receives the call signal via the mobile phone antenna. The call signal is then forwarded to the "audio equipment" in the following way:

The audio equipment sends the ringing tone over direct lines to the speaker system or, for vehicles with code (810) Sound system, over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.

IMPORTANT If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ringing is emitted over the vehicle speakers, otherwise the audio equipment 's default ringing tone is used.

The audio equipment mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. in radio mode) (MUTE). The caller ID is shown by the audio equipment via an LVDS line via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media) on the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT When "Tel" has been selected on the instrument cluster, the call recognition is indicated on the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the signals from the audio equipment via the interior CAN.

Call acceptance and rejection via the buttons on the mobile phone 

The call can be accepted or rejected by operating the mobile phone accordingly. The control signals are processed internally in the mobile phone, sent and then received by the audio equipment over the Bluetooth antenna.

Call acceptance and rejection through the Audio/COMAND control panel, telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment 

Selecting the "Accept" function with the Audio/COMAND control panel accepts the call in the hands-free mode and selecting the "Reject" function rejects the call. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via telematics CAN and via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media) to the audio equipment.

Pressing the "Accept call" button on the "audio equipment" serves to accept the call in hands-free mode. Pressing the "End" button on the "audio equipment" rejects the call. The control signals from the buttons on the "audio equipment" are processed internally.

The control signals are sent from the audio equipment to the mobile phone via the following route:

Call acceptance and rejection via the multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The call is accepted or rejected in hands-free mode by pressing the accept/terminate phone call button in the corresponding subfield. The control signal from the accept and terminate phone call button is forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the following components:

The audio equipment then forwards the control signals to the mobile phone over the Bluetooth antenna. The display in the instrument cluster, if the "Telephone" menu is selected on the instrument cluster, is performed by the audio equipment via interior CAN.

Call acceptance and rejection via remote control (model 204.9 with code (867) SPLITVIEW) 

The mobile phone system can be operated using the remote control. The COMAND controller unit receives the infrared signals from the remote control via its integrated infrared interface.

Control with call waiting, toggling (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) 

If another call signal is received during a current phone call, this is shown by the audio equipment via an LVDS line and via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media) on the Audio/COMAND display (call waiting). The toggle function enables a change to be made between the calls shown on the Audio/COMAND display. Voice communication only exists for the respective active telephone connection, while other connections are put on hold. The toggling function is dependent on it being supported by the mobile phone.

If the mobile phone does not support toggling, when another call is accepted the call active up until then is then terminated.

Phone book 

The phone book contains the phone book entries stored in the audio equipment. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book.

The connection can be established directly with the stored data via the phone book entries. The phonebook is called up in the basic "Telephone" function via the "Name" menu item in the application field.

IMPORTANT The phonebook for the mobile phone is downloaded in the background or updated in the audio equipment's phonebook if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP). Phonebook entries can be loaded as "vCards" via Bluetooth® or the USB electrical connector (X115) onto the audio equipment.

Address book (with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer or with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) 

The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book.

Data can also be transferred from other external devices (e.g. PDA, laptop, etc.) into the address book via the Bluetooth® interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna. "vCards" can also be transferred into the address book from an SD card via the Secure Digital (SD) card slot at the COMAND controller unit. These data are then permanently available as address entries. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries.

Address entries can contain the following:

The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field" (with code (498) Japan version). The address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit are shown in the address book. Read access is available to the phone book of the mobile phone when the mobile phone supports the PBAP profile.

Speed-dial list 

The speed dial list consists of up to ten telephone numbers to which phone book entries can be assigned with digits from 0 to 9. The Call list and Speed dial list menu entries enable the user to manage the entries.

The speed dial list is active only when the telephone menu is active. Pressing the number on the keypad of the audio equipment for a longer period of time (approx. 2 s) dials up the telephone number stored and establishes a connection.

"Private Mode" 

When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. When dialing using the buttons on the mobile phone, the telephone call is carried out in "Private Mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode" and "Private Mode" has been activated.

After a telephone call has been accepted or established in hands-free mode, you can switch to "Private Mode" by activating "Private Mode" via the mobile phone if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode".

"Seamless Switch" 

"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:

IMPORTANT With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.

Short Message Service (SMS) (except code (498) Japan version) 

The SMS application enables the user to manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the "audio equipment". The following SMS functions are possible:

IMPORTANT The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported.

The "SMS" function comprises the following subfunctions:

Upload given SMS to audio equipment 

The SMS already stored in the mobile phone are transmitted from the mobile phone to the "audio control unit" in the following way:

IMPORTANT Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.

Receiving SMS 

The SMS messages received by the mobile phone are sent as follows to the audio equipment:

Call up the SMS application 

The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the "Tel" basic function. The "TEL" base function is called up by pressing the "TEL" function key on the audio equipment. The corresponding basic mask appears. The "TEL" base function can also be called up via the "TEL" menu in the application bar. The submenu "SMS" can then be called up on the function bar. The "TEL" function key control signals are processed internally by the audio equipment. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via telematics CAN and via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media) to the audio equipment. The Audio/COMAND display is actuated by the audio equipment via an LVDS line and via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media).

Display SMS message 

The SMS content is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display. To do so, the audio equipment actuates the Audio/COMAND display via the LVDS line and via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media).

Reading out SMS message 

SMS voice output is conducted over the vehicle speaker system.

Additional function requirements for Mercedes-Benz Contact (except code (494) USA version or code (498) Japan version) 

Mercedes-Benz Contact (except code (494) USA version or code (498) Japan version) 

The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio equipment" or the telephone book of the mobile phone. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system (via Bluetooth®) and supports the service acceptance process at the Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.

Function sequence for establishing telephone call, data transfer and terminating call with Service Center 

The fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio unit" or in the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected via one of the following components:

After an active call has been established to the Service Center, the user starts the data transfer. The data is transferred after the call has been established by actuating a number key on the keypad of the audio equipment. For data transfer purposes, the audio equipment checks the kilometer reading and the maintenance computer information of the instrument cluster via the interior CAN. On vehicles with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer the navigation data are also transferred by the navigation module integrated in the audio equipment. The data is transmitted by the audio equipment by means of Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones to the service center in the same way as when the call has been established successfully. After the data has been transferred to the Service Center, the user can talk to an employee at the Service Center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.

Comfort telephony (with code (386) Mobile phone) or telephony with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) 

The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna (vehicle external antenna). Connection is established via the Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) in the telephone compartment under the center armrest.

On vehicles with code (386) Mobile phone (without code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP), a suitable mobile phone cradle (accessories) is inserted into the Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or into the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) and the corresponding mobile phone is then inserted into the mobile phone cradle (accessories).

On vehicles with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) is inserted into Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or into the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013).

IMPORTANT The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) can be removed and supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP).

Comfort telephony exhibits the following special features:

The Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) performs the following functions:

IMPORTANT On vehicles with mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013), the connection to the audio equipment occurs (via Bluetooth®) through the mobile phone.

Functions of the Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP 

The Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) performs the following functions:

IMPORTANT The connection to the audio equipment (via Bluetooth®) is performed by the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP).

Signal path with code (386) Mobile phone 

The Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) receives the mobile phone signals from the mobile telephone network via the following route:

The Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) forwards the mobile phone signals via the mobile phone cradle (accessories) to the mobile phone.

The Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) forwards the mobile phone signals via the Bluetooth antenna to the audio equipment.

Signal path with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP 

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) receives the mobile phone signals as follows from the mobile telephone network:

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) forwards the mobile phone signals via the Bluetooth antenna to the audio equipment.

Switch-on characteristics 

With comfort telephony the mobile phone system is automatically switched on by switching on the audio equipment by means of a wake-up pulse from the audio equipment. The audio equipment sends the signal via a direct line to the Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013).

The Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) or the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) forwards the signal with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) and with code (386) Mobile phone via the cradle to the mobile phone.

IMPORTANT Not all mobile phone cradles support this switch on/off feature. Additional information at:

Personal Identification Number (PIN) prompt with code (386) Mobile phone 

If configured on the mobile phone, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) is requested after the mobile phone has been switched on. The PIN prompt is shown by the audio equipment via an LVDS line and via the AMG Performance Media control unit (model 204.0/2/3 with code (255) AMG Performance Media) on the Audio/COMAND display as well as via the interior CAN in the instrument cluster and the PIN can be entered on the audio equipment.

Telephony with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP 

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in two different ways to make a call:

The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna. Connection is established via the mobile phone contact plate (as of 1.6.2013) or the Bluetooth module (up to 31.5.2013) in the telephone compartment under the center armrest. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is plugged into the mobile phone contact plate or the Bluetooth module.

IMPORTANT The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be removed from the Bluetooth® module with the aid of a release button. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP). If necessary, the SAP telephone can be charged using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). To do this, the cover on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) has to be removed.

Telephony with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP has the following additional special features:

Authorize telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)

Connect SAP telephone 

SAP telephones must support the SIM Access Profile and be connected (authorized) once with the telephone module using Bluetooth® (SAP profile). Up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized at the same time. After switching on the audio equipment, an automatic search is performed for the last two SAP telephones used in the vehicle, and the first one that responds is connected. SAP telephones can only be automatically connected if the following requirements are met:

If another SAP telephone is to be connected, then the connection has to be interrupted first and then the corresponding SAP telephone manually connected by selecting it from the list of SAP telephones.

SMS 

State of the art mobile phones come with two memories for SMS messages: one on the telephone and one on the SIM card. As long as the mobile phone is used for telephony with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP, incoming SMS messages in the mobile phone can only be stored on the SIM card. Storing incoming SMS messages on the SIM card can have two consequences:

IMPORTANT Under "Options", one of 10 ring tones can be selected on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) for telephony through the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP).

Software update 

The USB connector on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can also be used for installing software updates, e.g. with a USB memory (USB stick). The update files and the procedure are made available to the customer on the Internet.
