General function requirements

Reversing camera, general

The reversing camera system assists the driver when reverse parking and when backing up.

The reversing camera system consists of the following subfunctions:

IMPORTANT More information on reverse parking and parallel parking is available in the Reversing camera (RFK) operating instructions.

Additional function requirements for activating reversing camera

Activate reversing camera function sequence

The signal "Reverse gear engaged" is transmitted to the engine compartment CAN by the intelligent servo module for DIRECT SELECT (A80). This signal is routed to the interior CAN by the central gateway control unit (N93).

The rear SAM control unit (N10/8) reads in the rear-end door locking unit control unit (A72) and forwards the status over the interior CAN. The reversing camera control unit (N66/2) then supplies power to the reversing camera (B84/3).

The camera images recorded by the reversing camera are transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) via the reversing camera control unit as a CVBS signal (Composite Video Baseband Signal) and displayed.

In addition, the reversing camera control unit calculates guide lines based on the steering angle and the stored vehicle parameters. These are also integrated in the received camera images by the reversing camera control unit and transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit as a CVBS signal. The rotation angle is recorded by the steering angle sensor (N49). The steering column tube module (N80) reads in the steering angle sensor data and sends it over the engine compartment CAN to the central gateway control unit. The central gateway control unit routes the data on the interior CAN to the reversing camera control unit.

The reversing camera system enables the driver to select between two parking modes:

The parking mode last selected is activated by engaging reverse gear.

The driver can switch between reverse parking mode and parallel parking mode via the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

IMPORTANT Voice support can also be activated via the COMAND operating, display and controller unit during parallel parking.

Additional function requirements for activating outside mirror camera

IMPORTANT The left front RPM sensor (L6/1) and the right front RPM sensor (L6/2) record the wheel speeds at the front wheels. The signals of the RPM sensor are read in by the ESP control unit (N47-5) and sent over the engine compartment CAN to the instrument cluster (A1).

The instrument cluster uses the RPM sensor signals to generate a vehicle speed signal which is then sent over the interior CAN to the reversing camera control unit.

Activate outside mirror camera function sequence

If the passenger-side outside mirror reversing camera (B84/6) function is selected via the corresponding softkey on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the camera images from the passenger-side outside mirror reversing camera are displayed on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit by means of CVBS signals transferred via the reversing camera control unit.

In addition, the reversing camera control unit calculates guide lines based on the steering angle and the stored vehicle parameters. These are also integrated in the received camera images by the reversing camera control unit and transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit as a CVBS signal.
