PARKTRONIC function - GF54.65-P-0003LE

MODEL 221.0/1 up to 31.5.09 with CODE (220) PARKTRONIC as of model year 2009/YoM 08 

MODEL 216.3 up to 31.8.10 as of model year 2009/YoM 08 

Function requirements, general 

PARKTRONIC, general 

The PARKTRONIC system is an ultrasonic measuring system used to determine the distance between the vehicle and an obstacle. It assists the driver when parking and in maneuvering situations at speeds of v < 16 km/h.

The distance between the vehicle and the obstacle is indicated to the driver visually and acoustically.

IMPORTANT The PARKTRONIC system is reactivated even if it was manually deactivated during the last journey using the PTS OFF switch (S6/2s12).

The PARKTRONIC system consists of the following subfunctions:

IMPORTANT Its operating principle (transmission and reception of sound waves), means that it will be unable to function properly in certain situations. So it can occur that incorrect values are displayed when an obstacle which absorbs a lot of sound is approached (e.g. a vehicle covered by snow).

Self-test function sequence 

The PTS control unit (N62) performs a self-test when the ignition is switched on (circuit 15 ON).

The following components are checked for proper operation:

After the self-test, the rear warning indicator is fully actuated for approx. t = 1 s directly by the PTS control unit.

To display the front warning indicator, the PTS control unit sends the request via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the central gateway control unit (N93) and further via the central CAN (CAN F) to the instrument cluster (A1).

If there are no malfunctions or system errors, the two yellow horizontal "standby bars" of the warning indicator in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster light up and both inner yellow LEDs in the rear warning indicator light up with reduced brightness. The background illumination of the warning indicators is automatically adjusted to suit the ambient brightness.

The PTS control unit performs further self-tests at regular intervals. The PTS control unit distinguishes between a malfunction and a system error. In the event of a system error or a malfunction, the PARKTRONIC system is deactivated and the red LEDs of the warning indicator concerned are actuated.

The following states can be recorded:

Malfunction 

A malfunction can be caused by a temporary external disturbance (e.g. a jackhammer on a construction site, a steam jet or by driving through an automatic car wash).

If a malfunction occurs during operation, this is indicated by illumination of the red segments or red LEDs of the warning indicator concerned.

If the malfunction is present over a long period, the cause is identified during driving by means of a self-test. If the malfunction is still present, this is interpreted as a system error.

IMPORTANT A warning sound is not emitted.

System fault 

A system fault can have the following causes:

If a system error is detected, the red display elements in the respective warning indicator in question are actuated.

An acoustic warning is also emitted for t = 2 s.

Following a further t = 20 s, the PARKTRONIC system shuts down and a fault is entered in the fault memory of the control unit.

Additional function requirements for activation and deactivation 

IMPORTANT The status of the parking brake is read in via the electric parking brake switch (S76/15) by the electric parking brake controller unit (A13). The controller unit sends this signal via the front end CAN (CAN G) to the central gateway control unit. From there, the signal is sent via the interior CAN to the PTS control unit.

Activate and deactivate function sequence 

The PTS is deactivated and activated manually using the PTS OFF switch in the cockpit switch group (S6/2). If the system is deactivated, the function LED in the PTS OFF switch is actuated.

The status of the cockpit switch group is read in by the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) via the instrument panel LIN (LIN 1). The upper control panel control unit forwards the status of the PTS OFF switch to the PTS control unit via the interior CAN.

With the PTS activated, the warning indicators are actuated with a certain brightness depending on the status of the rain/light sensor (B38/2).

The status of the rain/light sensor is read in by the overhead control panel control unit (N70) and transmitted via the interior CAN to the PTS control unit. If the rain/light sensor detects "night", the warning indicators are actuated with 30% brightness. During the "day" the warning indicators are actuated at 100 % brightness.

When driving, the PARKTRONIC system switches to standby mode at a vehicle speed between v = 16 and 40 km/h, i.e. the PTS control unit, the warning indicators and the distance sensors are supplied with voltage but the warning indicators are not yet actuated.

IMPORTANT Illumination of the rear warning indicator is controlled by the PTS control unit. Illumination of the warning indicator in the multifunction display is controlled by the instrument cluster.

Monitoring range diagram

If gear range "D" is engaged, the monitoring zone (A) in front of the vehicle is monitored; if gear range "R" or "N" is engaged, the monitoring zones (A, B) in front of and behind the vehicle are monitored.

The monitoring zone in front of the vehicle is max. 100 cm (a); the monitoring zone behind the vehicle is max. 120 cm (b).

If the distances are less than 20 cm (c1, c2), the PTS control unit will not receive any more defined values.

IMPORTANT The outer left front PTS ultrasonic sensor and outer right front PTS ultrasonic sensor are used for protecting corners in the swivel range of the vehicle front. A minimum distance of s = 15 cm applies to the monitored range at these locations and it is implemented by means of software.

Ultrasonic sensors are not installed for corner protection in the swivel range of the vehicle at the rear because these areas can be seen using the outside mirrors.

Additional function requirements for reverse travel 

Function sequence for reverse travel 

The monitoring range is active at the front and back when reversing. The status of the DIRECT SELECT gear selector switch (S16/13) is read in by the steering column tube module (N80) and transmitted via the chassis CAN (CAN E).

The EGS control unit (N15/3) (with transmission 722.6) or the fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) (Y3/8n4) (with transmission 722.9) send "reverse gear engaged" via the drive train CAN (CAN C) to the CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine) or to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine) which forwards the request to the central gateway control unit (N93) via the chassis CAN.

The central gateway control unit forwards the "reverse gear engaged" signal to the PTS control unit via the interior CAN.

The vehicle speed is calculated in the instrument cluster using the signals from the left front rpm sensor (L6/1), right front rpm sensor (L6/2), left rear rpm sensor (L6/3) and right rear rpm sensor (L6/4). The signals from the rpm sensors are read in by the ESP control unit (N47-5) and sent to the central gateway control unit via the chassis CAN.

The instrument cluster receives the signals from the central gateway control unit via the central CAN and evaluates them.

The instrument cluster then sends the vehicle speed signal to the central gateway control unit via the central CAN. The vehicle speed signal is forwarded to the PTS control unit via the interior CAN.

When the vehicle drops below the lower limit speed of 16 km/h, the PARKTRONIC system changes to measurement mode. If obstacles are detected in front of or behind the vehicle, the driver is first alerted visually by illumination of the corresponding LEDs in the warning indicators.

When the distance drops below s < 30 cm, the warning is emitted initially as an intermittent tone and then as a continuous signal (see the table below). When the vehicle speed exceeds v = 18 km/h, the PARKTRONIC system switches back to standby mode.

IMPORTANT Any active audio sources are muted by the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) for the duration of the acoustic warning.

IMPORTANT On model 221 with code (550) Trailer hitch, the area behind the vehicle is not monitored during trailer operation. The trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) sends the "trailer detected" status to the PTS control unit via the interior CAN.

Additional function requirements for forward travel 

IMPORTANT The vehicle speed is detected by the rpm sensors. The signals from the rpm sensors are sent by the ESP control unit to the central gateway control unit via the chassis CAN. The instrument cluster receives the signals from the central gateway control unit via the central CAN. From these signals, the instrument cluster generates a vehicle speed signal which is sent back to the central gateway control unit and from there it is forwarded to the PTS control unit via the chassis CAN.

Forward travel function sequence 

With forward travel, the front monitoring zone is active.

When the vehicle drops below the lower limit speed of v < 16 km/h, the PARKTRONIC system changes to measurement mode.

If obstacles are detected in front of the vehicle, the driver is first alerted visually by illumination of the corresponding display elements in the warning indicator.

When the distance drops below s < 30 cm, the warning is emitted initially as an intermittent tone and then as a continuous signal (see the table above).

When the vehicle speed exceeds v = 18 km/h, the PARKTRONIC system changes back to standby mode.
