Adaptive damping system (ADS), function - GF32.32-P-0002CW

MODEL 204.0 /2 with CODE (483) ADVANCED AGILITY package up to Model Year 8

General function requirements

Adaptive damping system (ADS), general

The adaptive damping system (ADS) adapts the damping forces of the shock absorbers to the road surface condition, driving style and chosen settings.

The driver can choose between a sporty or comfort-oriented suspension.

The system is made up of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence, damping mode selection

A sporty or comfort-oriented suspension can be selected by actuating the vehicle dynamics button (N72/1s23) on the upper control panel control unit (N72/1).

The information is transferred to the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) by the upper control panel control unit via the instrument panel LIN (LIN 1) and from there to the adaptive damping system control unit (N51/5) via the chassis CAN (CAN E).

If the Sport variant is selected, the light-emitting diode (LED) integrated in the vehicle dynamics button lights up.

Pressing the vehicle dynamics button again selects Comfort mode and the LED goes out.

Additional function requirements for driving condition

Function sequence, measurement of driving conditions

The adaptive damping system control unit determines the current vehicle level and shock absorber speeds via the left front level sensor (B22/8), right front level sensor (B22/9), left rear level sensor (B22/7) and right rear level sensor (B22/10).

The vehicle body acceleration and body speed are determined via the left front body acceleration sensor (B24/3), right front body acceleration sensor (B24/4) and left rear body acceleration sensor (B24/5).

In addition, information from the following control units is transferred to the adaptive damping system control unit via the chassis CAN:

The following information is transferred to the adaptive damping system control unit via the chassis CAN:

IMPORTANT The Electronic Stability Program control unit receives information about vehicle longitudinal/lateral acceleration and yaw rate from the yaw rate, lateral and longitudinal acceleration sensor (B24/15) via the vehicle dynamics CAN (CAN-H).

The wheel speeds are determined by the Electronic Stability Program control unit using the signals from the left front axle rpm sensor (L6/1), right front axle rpm sensor (L6/2), left rear axle rpm sensor (L6/3) and right rear axle rpm sensor (L6/4).

Additional function requirements for shock absorber adjustment

Function sequence, shock absorber adjustment

Based on the input signals, the adaptive damping system control unit determines the optimal damping stage for each shock absorber and directly actuates the left front axle damping valve unit (Y51), right front axle damping valve unit (Y52), left rear axle damping valve unit (Y53) and right rear axle damping valve unit (Y54) accordingly.
