The audio mode consists of the following component functions:

Audio functions can be selected, activated and adjusted with the following components:

Radio mode function sequence (AM/FM) 

The antennas in the rear window receive high frequency (HF) signals for the FM and AM (MW, LW) radio frequency bands. The following useful signals relevant for the radio reception are modulated onto these HF signals:

These high frequency signals are transmitted via discrete lines to the FM, AM and CL [ZV] antenna amplifier (A2/18) (model 204.0) or to the rear window antenna amplifier 1 (A2/71) (model 204.2) as well as to the rear window antenna FM antenna amplifier (A2/19). These amplifiers filter the frequencies of the radio frequency bands out of the received HF signals and amplify them. The amplified signals are then sent via coaxial lines (FM, AM) to the tuner integrated in the COMAND controller unit and demodulated.

The signals are transmitted by the COMAND controller unit in vehicles with code (810) Sound system to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).

From there, the signals are transmitted via discrete lines to the following speakers:

The radio mode function sequence consists of the following component functions:

AM tuner (MW, LW, SW) function 

For the MW and LW radio frequency bands, the useful signals are broadcast using amplitude modulation (AM).

These signals are demodulated by the AM tuner integrated into the COMAND controller unit. In other words, it separates the useful signals (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible).

FM dual tuner with phase diversity (FM) 

For the FM radio frequency band, the useful signals are broadcast using frequency modulation (FM). These signals are demodulated by the FM tuner integrated into the COMAND controller unit. In other words, it also separates the useful signals (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible). The COMAND controller unit also enables an additional reception-specific changeover between the two antenna amplifiers. This function runs automatically.

VICS function 

Known as VICS, the Vehicle Information and Communication System is a radio service free of charge. The driver is provided with vital information by the VICS on the current traffic situation. Traffic jams and disruptions to traffic are displayed on the map and incorporated into the dynamic destination-oriented navigation.

The radio antenna signal is received by the FM, AM and CL [ZV] antenna amplifier and forwarded to the radio tuner in the COMAND controller unit. There, the information contained in the radio antenna signal is processed by the integrated FM multiplexer. The information is then forwarded via a low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) where it is displayed. Apart from this, the FM [UKW] multiplexer can receive additional information, e.g. on the weather or earthquakes.

Function sequence for audio DVD/CD and MP3 

A 1-disk DVD player is integrated in the COMAND controller unit. This DVD player can play the following media and formats:

The user interface for controlling the DVD functionality (e.g. track selection) and the display of supplemental information (e.g. track) take place via a LVDS line on the Audio/COMAND display. The audio signals are transmitted by the COMAND controller unit in vehicles with code (810) Sound system to the sound system amplifier control unit over MOST.

From there, the audio signals are transmitted via discrete lines to the following speakers:

Music Register function sequence 

The "Music Register" function enables the files on a CD, DVD or the PCMCIA (memory card) to be saved on the hard disk in the COMAND controller unit. The stored music files can be called up as desired.
