The multifunction steering wheel (MFL) serves to increase active driving safety in road traffic in combination with the instrument cluster (A1).

The driver can concentrate on the traffic without distraction when controlling and operating various vehicle components (e.g. radio, telephone). The multifunction steering wheel allows the driver to operate and interrogate the following systems:

Radio
COMAND
Navigation
Distronic
Trip computer
ASSYST
Telematics/E-Call (USA)
Telephone
Tire pressure monitor (TPM)
Steering wheel gear shift

The main system selected by the user is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1). In addition, the fanfare horns (H2) can be actuated by means of the impact plate of the multifunction steering wheel.

The start screen for the selected level is always displayed when the display level is changed, not the last submenu selected in this display.

Task of left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110)

In system selection button (S110s3) and Scroll forward and backward buttons (S110s1) are included in the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110).

Each of the systems can be called with the system selection button (S110s3). It is possible to "scroll" forward and backward in the systems. It is also possible to "scroll" forward and backward with the scroll forward and backward button (S110s1) in a system, i.e. additional submenus can be called up.

Task of right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)

The right-hand button group for the multifunction steering wheel (S111) contains the button for accepting and terminating a telephone call (S111s3), and the + and - buttons, which are used to set specific functions and for the volume control (S111s1). A telephone call can be accepted or terminated with the accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3).

The volume for the system currently active can be adjusted with the button + and -, setting of specific functions and volume control (S111s1). In addition, for example, in the "Settings" system, the OFF delay time of the interior light can be extended (+) or shortened (-).

Transfer of signals

The signals are read in via the local interconnect network (LIN) bus from the steering column module (N80) and then sent to the Controller Area Network bus, class B (interior) (CAN-B) and to the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C).

Steering wheel gear shift

Using the left steering wheel gear shifter (S110/2) and the right steering wheel gear shifter (S111/2) the following functions are possible.

Preselection of shift range.
Shifting into a gear from which the vehicle can be favorably accelerated or decelerated.
Direct shifting of all forward gears.

Transfer of shift signals

The left steering wheel gear shifter (S110/2) and the right steering wheel gear shifter (S111/2) are read in via the LIN bus from the steering column module (N80). The steering column module (N80) places the "shift up" or "shift down" signal on CAN-C. The ETC control unit (N15/3) receives the signal and triggers the gear change.

Shifting at unacceptably high or low engine speed is not carried out.
