Function requirements: 

• Voltage supply OK.
• Media Oriented System Transport bus (MOST) active.
• Portable CTEL (A34/6) inserted into UPCI portable CTEL mounting (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15).
• Activated SIM card inserted into portable CTEL (A34/6).
• Correct PIN entry and successful log-in to the respective service provider network.

The UPCI system (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) enables telephone calls to be made with the portable CTEL (A34/6) using the hands-free system only. A "private mode" is not possible.

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) control unit (N123/1) enables various portable CTELs (A34/6), e.g. Nokia, Siemens and Motorola, to be optionally used in the car.

To this end only the respective UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) has to be replaced. In addition to this, Bluetooth-capable devices can also be operated (not USA).

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system consists of the following components: 

• N123/1 Universal Portable CTEL interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit
• UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15), not for code (386) and code (387).
• Telephone antenna for model 211.0 (A2/49a1) or model 211.2 (A2/22).
• Telephone/portable CTEL/STH radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53)
• Telephone compensator, data (A28/2) for code 449a
• E-net compensator (A28/3) (not USA)
• Portable CTEL (A34/6), not for code (386) and code (387)
• Hands-free system microphone (A67b1)
• Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) (not USA)
• Radio (A2) or for COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) for code (352) COMAND operating and display system.

Each portable CTEL (A34/6) connected to the vehicle's MOST bus via the UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) and Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) control unit (N123/1).

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system contains the following functions: 

• Build up of telephone connections in hands-free mode.
• WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) displayed by way of portable CTEL in display of COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)).
• Display of telephone numbers and call recognition.
• Display stored telephone numbers from portable CTEL in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) (selection of menu item "TEL" using system selection button (S110s3) and scroll (telephone book function) using scroll forward/back button (S110s1)).
• Display stored telephone numbers from portable CTEL by way of numbered keypad of COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) for code (352) COMAND operating and display system. (Selection of menu item "TEL" with system selection button (S110s3) and scroll (telephone book function) using scroll forward/back button (S110s1)).

Activation of the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system ensues by way of on/off button on portable CTEL (A34/6).

A wake-up pulse via the MOST bus provides an optional automatic activation. This can be initiated by means of the status "circuit 15 ON", or for code (352) COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

Deactivation of the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system is done by way of the on/off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6) or automatically in accordance with the run-on time set on the portable CTEL (A34/6).

Speech input takes place via the hands-free system microphone (A67b1). If a voice control system control unit (A35/11) is installed for code (813) voice control system (VCS), the voice output is sent over this and the MOST bus to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) control unit (N123/1).

Voice output takes place over the audio speakers. In order to ensure that user voice input over the hands-free system microphone (A67b1) is as clear as possible, the volume of an active audio source (e.g. the CD changer (in the luggage compartment) (A2/6)) is muted during a telephone call. The volume of the speaker system can be individually regulated by the user.

This can be done using the + and buttons integrated in the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1), or via the portable CTEL (A34/6).

Additional buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) enable further functions to be executed:

• Scroll forward/back pushbutton (S110s1)
• System select pushbutton (S110s3)
• Accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3)

A series of displays in the following components inform the user of the operating condition of the portable CTEL (A34/6) (e.g. "ENTER PIN"):

• Portable CTEL (A34/6)
• With code (352) COMAND operating and display system in display of COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system is compatible with the D-net and E-net. This is enabled by the installation of the E-net compensator (A28/3), which compensates for the active attenuation through the higher transmission frequency of the E-net.
