Function requirements
- Status "circuit 30 ON" or "circuit 15R ON"
- Mobile phone system operating error-free
- A mobile telephone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
- Compatible mobile phone inserted into the cradle (comfort telephony) or Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone available in the vehicle and registered at the radio (A2) (basic telephony)
- Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted into mobile phone
General
A distinction is made between the following 2 versions for the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Comfort telephony, with code (386) Mobile phone
Both systems use Bluetooth technology for data transfer. The mobile phone system consists of the following component functions:
- Telephone switch-on/switch-off characteristics, function
- Establishing/ending a phone call, function
- Phone call acceptance, function
- Short Message Service (SMS), function

Operating instructions
The mobile phone system can be operated via:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone buttons on radio
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups (MFL)
Supplemental information on address book
The user can manage his contact data in the address book function (view, edit, complete, delete and add new). The address book contains the address entries stored in the radio, and the data loaded from the mobile phone's phone book for comfort telephony.
The data from the mobile phone are then permanently available, even if the mobile phone is no longer inserted in the cradle. The Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) can be used to transmit data from other external devices (e.g. PDA, laptop, etc.) into the address book. These data are then permanently available as address entries. The address-relevant applications for telephony can be started directly via the address book entries and provided with the data stored. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address entries can contain the following:
- Names (surname and first name)
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (private, business, fixed-line network, mobile or car)
- Geo position (private or business)
- Company name
The mobile phone is taken out of operation by pressing the On/Off button on the mobile phone and subsequently removing the SIM card.
The SIM card may only be removed after the mobile phone has been deactivated in order to prevent permanent damage to the memory chip installed on the SIM card. When the mobile phone is reactivated, it is necessary to reenter the Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Private mode (comfort telephony only)
In "private mode" with comfort telephony the user makes a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to participate in the telephone conversation. This is achieved by removing the mobile phone from the mobile phone cradle (A34/15) during the phone call.
The phone call is retained on the mobile phone and can be continued on this. It is also possible to continue an existing phone call via handsfree mode by inserting the mobile phone back into the cradle. In vehicles with code (810) Sound system and except code (523) MB Audio 20 radio, the voice output takes place in the handsfree mode from the radio over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) and from there straight via discrete lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
- Center instrument panel speaker (H4/27)
- Bass speaker (H4/29)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
For vehicles except code (810) Sound system and with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio, the voice output for the basic telephony and for comfort telephony takes place in the handsfree mode from the radio directly over discrete lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Center instrument panel speaker
