Location 

The radio is located in the center console.

Task 

The radio is the central operating unit for the entertainment and communications systems integrated in the vehicle. It provides the user with the following system components:

• Audio system
• Communications System

The radio generates a structured and standard interface, which is then shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

In addition to this the radio supports the following control units:

• Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
• Satellite Digital Audio Radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio)
• Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)

The radio acts as a gateway. The radio routes the signals from the interior CAN to the telematics CAN and Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) components and forms the communications interface.

Function 

The buttons for the control panel on the radio are read in and made available to the integrated central computer. The button operations are processed further in the central computer and forwarded via MOST, the telematics CAN and the interior CAN to the other system components as messages. The radio switches on when the ON/OFF button on the radio is pressed. The volume is regulated by turning the ON/OFF button for each set audio source. Pressing the function keys enables the user to switch to the desired system components.

CD-6-disk changer 

The integrated CD changer can be used to play audio CDs (including in MP3 format).
