Remove/install jacket tube - AR46.10-P-0400V

Manually adjustable jacket tube

	Remove/install
	Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.	Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.	-
	Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts		-
1	Pull out adjustable steering column completely
2	Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position)	On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.
3	Remove engine compartment paneling		AR61.20-P-1105V
4.1	Detach heat shield	Model 171.456, see: ↓
		Replacing steering shaft boot	AR46.10-P-0621VA
5	Unscrew bolt (25a) from the steering coupling (25) at the lower steering shaft (80a)		*BA46.10-P-1001-01E
6	Push lower steering shaft (80a) upwards out of the steering coupling (25)	Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral forces.
		Installation:  Rotate the rack-and-pinion steering into the center position. Installation:  Insert bottom steering shaft (80a) fully into the steering coupling (25); pay attention to the studs of the steering coupling (25) and groove of the bottom steering shaft (80a).	AR46.20-P-0600-01V
7	Pull locking plate (25f) off the steering coupling (25) while lifting the lug using a suitable tool	Installation:  Replace locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut. Push on the locking plate (25f) until the lug in the steering coupling (25) latches.
8	Remove steering wheel		AR46.10-P-0100V
9	Remove steering column switch module (72)	See: ↓
		Remove/install clock spring contact	AR46.10-P-0200V
10	Remove instrument cluster		AR54.30-P-6015V
11	Remove left cover under the instrument panel		AR68.10-P-1500V
12	Unclip bushing (b) of steering column switch module (72) on jacket tube (71)
13	Unplug electrical connector (37p) at electric steering lock control unit (N26/5).
14	Swivel the toggle (99f) forward until it snaps into the lever (99e)
15	Press the handle arm (99e) downwards to separate from the jacket tube (71)
16	Unscrew lower bolt (91b) of steering column adjustment (80) on crossmember		*BA46.10-P-1004-03N
17	Unscrew upper bolts (91a) of steering column adjustment (80) on crossmember	Installation:  Tighten bolts (91a, 91b) finger-tight (the jacket tube (71) must remain movable). Tighten the upper bolts (91a) first and then the lower bolt (91b).

18	Pull jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) upwards until the lug of the steering column adjustment (80) is moved out of the guide bore
19	Push the jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downwards and remove through the footwell	Do not use force, as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to forces applied from the side. Installation:  If the boot has been pull out of the firewall: Lubricate the boot on the jacket tube in the area of the sealing surface and insert in the firewall from the footwell. Ensure that the continuous groove guarantees correct sealing.
